Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In 1939, after surviving a crash in a French battlefield, Czech airman Robert Bozdech saved the life of his pilot and then, in spite of the dire circumstances, a small German Shepherd puppy the two men found in an abandoned farmhouse. In the years that followed as Bozdech, a man without a country, flew for the French and the RAF, his dog, Ant, was always by his side, a dearly loved mascot. Lewis was able to contact Bozdech’s children and gain access to his personal wartime memoirs as well as letters home and other papers related to his military experiences. The result is a gripping war story and an utterly heartfelt narrative about a man and a dog, where the ending, thank goodness, is happy. On more than one occasion, Ant saved Bozdech, and he certainly returned the favor. Through enemy gunfire, circumventing official regulations and dangerous illness, they were loyal and true to each other and the war effort. A stirring drama of WWII that dog lovers will not be able to resist. --Colleen Mondor

I really like books that can keep my interest thru out the story. This is one of them.
First and foremost I received this Advanced uncorrected book from the publisher as a winner on Goodreads.com. AND now my review.

The title of the book - The Dog Who Could Fly - is exactly that- this incredible dog named Antis did fly many, many missions during WW11 with his BEST buddy - Robert Bozdech, a Czech airman flying with the RAF Bomber Command. However, not all the flights and land journeys were of the legal nature for the German Shepherd. But despite all the obstacles and War injuries and the Strong Will of Antis and the help from his War buddies he managed to survive and live beyond the end of the war. HOW was this possible? Read the book. I did and sure glad I was one of those lucky Goodreads winners.

Thank you Damien Lewis for putting together a very worth while and INTERESTING book that should be a hit for those interested in the incredible stories that were part of WW11.

I've read a few great dog books, such as "Last dog on the Hill","Merle's Door,"and "A dog's Purpose." among others. I can now add another book to that list: "The Dog who Could Fly." This book can best be described as written in a creative non-fiction style, since the author embellishes a lot of the dialogue that he wasn't privy to. This, however, does not in any way detract from the sheer joy of reading this wonderful book. Antis the dog was a true hero, and his loyalty and devotion to Robert Bozdech is very touching. Any person who loves dog, and I am one of those people, can connect to the relationship between man and dog as portrayed in this book. The fact that it was also exciting and paced well adds to the allure of the book. Thus far, I can say that this is the best book I've read so far this year, and when you consider that I read an average of two books a week, that's saying a lot. This book, along with the others I mentioned, deserve to be classics. I can't say enough good things about this book. It's just a wonderful book that will make you smile while simultaneously tugging on your heart strings.

War Dog (the original title) was very well received in England, where it was originally published. By the time you've finished reading this true story of man-and-dog you might even look at Fido with deeper appreciation. How fascinating that a dog who could fly with his master on dangerous missions long ago still enchants today's readers here and abroad. Man's best friend indeed.

I firmly believe that dogs are the man's best friend and I like aviation, but never was I really that interested in military stories. This is a book like no other because it brings this altogether into a truly riveting story. Damien Lewis' "living history" style was a perfect match for this true story that was hidden away in the dusty blue diary of Czech airman Robert Bozdech. I could see it turned into a movie someday, for sure! From their first meeting in the war zone, Robert and Ant the German Shepherd developed a "loyal until death" bond that will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart.

Together they fought the war. In fact, Ant was recognized as the best source of information about incoming Nazi Luftwaffe attacks. Since radar was in its infancy, his uncanny ability to hear what the radar could not, saved countless lives. This book "will appeal to dog lovers and history buffs who can tolerate the florid novelization and fictionalized dialogue", as Kirkus Review so poignantly puts it. This is my first time reading Lewis and I found his narration quite information and entertaining. I'm interested in reading more by him, but first my itch for more aviation history needs to be satisfied - by An Aviator's Wife and Flying Fortress.

I will admit that I am a sucker for dogs, and for books of dog memoirs. And I like a good story about victory over the Nazis, too. So you can tell just from the subtitle that I would be an enthusiast for _The Dog Who Could Fly: The Incredible True Story of a WWII Airman and the Four-Legged Hero Who Flew at His Side_ (Atria Books) by Damien Lewis. It is both a fine dog story and a war story. Lewis has written about military issues, and military dogs, many times before. He has also collaborated with warriors to tell their stories, and in a way, this is what he has done with his current book. The subject of airman Robert Bozdech and his dog Antis has been in a couple of books before, and Lewis looked them up, only to find that he had plenty of questions about Bozdech’s story that the books didn’t touch. And so he checked with Bozdech’s family; had the airman written his own version of the story? “Oh, you mean Dad’s original manuscript?” said his son. “Yes, of course, I’ll just fetch a copy.” There were also photos, and reel-to-reel tape recordings. From this, Lewis has fashioned the story, reassuring us that he has used Bozdech’s own words as much as possible.

It was war that brought Bozdech and his dog together in the first place when he rescued the little German shepherd puppy after his plane was shot down in no-man’s-land between Germany and France. They made it back to allied lines, and Bozdech and the dog formed the strongest of bonds. He and his Czech pals were flying for France against the Nazis, and Bozdech took Antis up for flights because he was worried that he might have to land on some airfield different from the one he had departed from.
