Review

Part memoir, part Gilligan’s Island trivia, with the bulk of the book filled with tips on everything from manners to men, the book is based on the premise of ‘what would Mary Ann do if she found herself in X situation’ with those situations ranging from how Mary Ann would handle today’s culture to how she’d deal with modern men. . . .Perhaps the best advice in the book (in my humble opinion, particularly important for young girls reading the book) came in the chapter, 'The allure of being alluring,' where the author shares Mary Ann’s style points and the best advice of all, 'Your looks are not worth your health.'. . . .If . . . you’re looking for some down-home, honest, useful advice, take a look at this book. (Feathered Quill)

About the Author

A native of Reno, Nevada, Dawn Wells attended Stephens College in Missouri before going on to represent Nevada in the Miss America pageant in 1959. She found success in Hollywood immediately afterward, appearing in such shows as 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick, Bonanza, and Hawaiian Eye. She was later cast in the role of a lifetime as Mary Ann in Gilligan’s Island, beating out 350 other actresses, including Raquel Welch. Since then, Wells has continued acting on the stage and screen, produced films, and been active in a number of charities.

Steve Stinson is an artist and writer in Virginia, where he lives with his patient wife in the world’s smallest five bedroom house. When he was young and limber, he was a juggler and wrote comic strips. Today, his grandchildren call him “Bebop.” His four children’s books, Grumpypants, Where Kent Went, Darien the Crustatarien, and My Favorite Nursery Rhymes, will be classics someday.

This is a cute little book out just in time for the 50th anniversary of Gilligan's Island. It does contain a little bit of Gilligan's Island trivia but it is mostly a part memoir, part etiquette guide. The characterization shifts throughout the book from that of Dawn Wells to situations with what and how Mary Ann would respond to them. Sometimes it came across as a Miss Manners tome, but since this is supposed to be what Mary Ann would do it would seem only natural since she is a good girl who was raised in the times when social graces were more the norm. Some very nice pictures from Dawn's personal collection. I was surprised at how much she looks like her mother. I would have liked to see more trivia and behind the scenes scoops from the series but I guess after 50 years there wasn't much left to tell that hasn't already been said over the years. There are little side bar tributes to the deceased GI cast mates, but not one for Tina Louise. Guess that had something to do with her still being alive and maybe needing her okay? As for the Amazon description, they need to update it. The book only has about 245 pages, not 328. Also I didn't find any GI trivia questions or any financial advice from "Thurston Howell". Overall it is a nice little item to add to your memorabilia collection for pop culture items.

A great read that shows Dawn Well's heart and sensibilities. Fantastic photos, illustrations, and advice on being a good person, not a goody-goody, but a mensch, a person who follows the Golden Rule. Great advice on everything from cellphones to drinking. The best in-depth 30 minute interview with Dawn Wells as on Richard Rossi Live on radio show. Google "Dawn Wells and So Much More Richard Rossi Live".

I so, so wanted to buy this book because I love Gilligan's Island and Mary Ann is one of only two original cast members still living, plus, the 50th Anniversary of GI is fast approaching. But wait- Ms. Wells says in the book that Mary Ann preferred the Professor!!! NOOOO! This breaks my heart because I (and I'm sure I'm not alone) always wanted it to be Mary Ann and Gilligan (and Ginger and The Professor.) Sorry Mary Ann, it's a NO from this broken hearted GI fan. :(
