"The exchanged life." Hudson Taylor first used the term to describe what it means to know Christ as our sufficiency in all things. Taylor is but one of the many Christian luminaries who have discovered Christ as the secret to abundant living. John Bunyan, Andrew Murray, Amy Carmichael, Oswald Chambers, Charles Finney-behind the varied lives and personalities of these and other men and women lies a common theme, a pattern that leads from desperation to the abundant life Jesus promised. From their stories, we too can find the path to deeper faith and a more vital relationship with God. In They Found the Secret, Raymond Edman presents the lives of twenty well-known and little-known Christians. "The details of their experience of the crisis of the deeper life are delightfully different," Edman writes, "yet their testimony to the reality of the joy and power of the Spirit-filled life is unanimous . . . It is [the Lord] who satisfies the longing soul. He is the secret of the exchanged life!"
About the Author
V. Raymond Edman is best remembered as the fourth president of Wheaton College in Illinois and as the writer of many devotional books. He earned his Ph.D. in International Relations from Clark University in 1933 and soon after that went to Wheaton were he remained until his death in 1967 while speaking in chapel.
Edman has written an excellent title that documents the various struggles 20 Christians faced in moving from despair and depression based on self-effort to the abundant life found by letting Christ live His life through them.
Among the people mentioned include: Oswald Chambers, Hudson Taylor, John Bunyan, Amy Carmichael, Dwight Moody, Ian Thomas, and Andrew Murray. While these people were and are well-known in Christian circles, the author also includes other folks who while not as well-known, were also able to experience the abundant life.
Read and be challenged to stop trying to live the Christian life and instead let Christ live His life through You!
Highly recommended!

I come from a non-charismatic background so I was cautious about anyone offering special solutions for the Christian's spiritual life. But Edman presents case after case of people whom God touched in unique ways but all had these three things in common: they were hungry for more; they had a second experience AFTER conversion and this experience with God proved to be a turning point in their walk with their Lord. A great book for people who are open to more of God. Is totally unbounded by denominational lines. Shows that while God deals uniquely with the searching heart, he is predictable and faithful. If I may add a personal word, this is one of the top 10 books that have influenced my whole life. I am glad to see it is still in print! You will be too! If you are hungry for God and His kingdom, this book is for you.

To say that a book "changed my life" sounds a bit like a tired cliche, but that is exactly what I would say about THEY FOUND THE SECRET. The "secret" of the Christian life is Christ Himself, indwelling the heart of the believer, and enabling one to live not according to their own sincere efforts on Christ's behalf, but living according to the riches and resources one has in Christ by virtue of their union with Him. It is the key message of the gospel, and yet it is often neglected in the contemporary church, either because of ignorance, or because of opposition to the teaching from fear that leading people to "abide in Christ" and to draw their direction and life from Him will mean a loss of "religious control" over church members.
The testimonial biographies within the book confirm the eternal truth of the "exchanged life," and provide encouragement and release to the believer who has found his or her Christian life tiresome and futile, and a realization of what the Christian life is all about.
This book is a "must read" for every believer, but particularly for the one who through sincerity of self-effort has found their religious life to be dry and discouraging. This book will, for many, provide a refreshing introduction into the grace of God that is found in Christ.

My husband read this book about 15 years ago. I just recently picked it up again and have fallen in love with it. It explains so well the fact that to walk with the Lord, we just have to let go and let Him have control -- in every area of our lives. It's amazing to me how we can trust God with our eternal soul, but it's so hard to trust Him with today.

If you've reached the place in your Christian walk where you find you're running on a tiring performance treadmill offering no end and no rest, then V. Raymond Edman's They Found the Secret is the book for you, because it certainly was for me. I was prompted to get this book after hearing Charles Stanley speak and write about it on several occassions. In my own walk, I had no peace, no rest. Ministry was just work, work, work. If I could have transferred certain people to the Aleutians, I'd have done it. That's when this book came around. Through very simply written mini-bio's, V. Raymond Edman explains how each person literally "stumbled" into the abiding life (John 15), and how after stumbling into it, their Christian walk and life was revolutionized. Such is my own testimony. Regardless of your personality type, in one or more of these sketches, you'll see yourself and what you need to let go of. Once you do, then you, too, will have found the secret.

They Found The Secret filled in the missing blank to my Christian walk. As a small child I sensed "God the Father" in creation, at the age of 30 I invited "God the Son" into my heart ... 22 years later I have finally discovered the secret in Luke 11:13 that the Father GIVES the Holy Spirit to THOSE WHO ASK OF HIM. So after living as an incomplete Christian for 22 yrs. I invited "God the Holy Spirit" into my life to totally control it. It is now like the last piece of the puzzle has been fit into my life. I only briefly heard Charles Stanley refer to this book and I knew it was something I had to read. Get it - and be ready to be amazed at what God will do in your heart & life as you ASK FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT.

When a very well-known SB pastor said this book "Absolutely revolutionized" his Christian life, I thought it was at least worth the minimal cost to see what he felt was so important. WOW! How simple! I have been a christian since age 12, raised in Church, PK, Sun morning, Sun night, Wed night, Thurs visitation, church pianist, etc etc etc all my life - how could I have missed this point??? How I wish I'd known it all these years. What a joy! What a relief! What a secret...
