Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

When this book was first published in hardcover, reviewers hailed it as "the best written musical autobiography since Bob Dylan's Chronicles," and lauded its famously rebellious English singer author as "so devastatingly articulate that he could win the Booker." Now Morrissey's Autobiography has justly become a Penguin Classic, poised to unleash its strong opinions about all matters under the sun, including but not limited to the music business, Manchester, animal rights, the royal family, contrarians, conservatives, being an outsider, his bandmates, and interviewers. Now in trade paperback and NOOK Book.

The New York Times Book Review - John Williams
…[Morrissey] proves equally adept at the rhythms and purposes of prose. When he turns his attention to people in his close orbit, like his grandmother or his friend James Maker, he exhibits the eye and pacing of a talented novelist…If there are any lingering questions about how much of the man is crafted persona, this book should dispel them. Morrissey is Morrissey to the marrow.
Wall Street Journal
Fascinating…lyrical…It's about as excellently written a rock-star memoir as one could hope to read.
Entertainment Weekly
A bracing, beautiful tour de force of a rock memoir…wonderfully lush…pulsating and alive…Even when he's spewing bile, his poetic raconteur's soul keeps him lovable. (“A” review)
The Boston Globe
“A precious source of light on his life and work…Moz at his Mozziest.”
Library Journal
02/01/2014
British singer and performer Morrissey's long-awaited autobiography is at once insightful and hyperbolic. There is an almost melodious flow to his writing, and anecdotes and examinations follow one another as 50-plus years of history are placed in a volume that lacks chapters and any real section breaks. Often humorous and at times self-deprecating in tone, this is very much the story of Steven Patrick Morrissey—his first meeting with guitarist Johnny Marr (with whom he would found the seminal 1980s band The Smiths) doesn't occur until about a third of the way through. The exploration of his early years offers a fascinating look at an emerging postwar Manchester, where touring pop stars like David Bowie would later serve as both influence and escape. He doesn't shy from airing grievances: a particular sore spot is the 1990s court case in which former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce successfully sued Morrissey and Marr for royalties. Those looking for details of Morrissey's personal life outside of music will be disappointed, however; more space is allocated to his penchant for rescuing ailing animals than his romantic relationships. Readers almost know him more and less at the memoir's conclusion, as Morrissey remains ever the enigma. VERDICT Highly recommended, especially for fans of the Smiths and 1980s music.—Amanda Mastrull, School Library Journal

I was very entertained by this book. Morrissey is a very gifted writer (as well as a gifted singer songwriter). The book moves at a fast pace and covers Morrissey’s life and career from birth to present day. It’s a book worth reading.

Morrissey's writing is very lyrical and figurative and expected, and his words are very pretty and pleasant to read.  However, it was soooo hard to read this book because he's so full of it..  He comes across as arrogant a lot of the time, but that I can't let that discredit his clear talent of being able to put together words and have the come out in utter beauty.  The book was pretty unorganized, with no clear structure within the paragraphs, and there's also aren't any defined chapters, but if you can over look some attitude problems and sloppy writing structure (did anyone edit this?)  then it's a really, really great book.

I learned that the US version has details of Moz’s personal life edited out (any references to homosexuality, which were deemed likely to “offend” American readers). I am appalled by this blatant censorship. Boycott the US version and buy only the UK edition.

    Beautiful writing

One does linger over his beautiful lyrical prose. Unfortunately, as with almost all musicians, much time is devoted to lawyers, sleazy managers, and court battles. Wish more time was spent on the creative process, but still would highly recommend this book. As much as he hated his Catholic school, they sure taught him how to write well!
