Everyone loves Jack Holland, but Emmaline Neal needs him. Her ex-fiancé is getting married in Malibu and, obviously, she can't go to the wedding alone. In Manningsport, New York, tall, blond and gorgeous Jack Holland is practically a cottage industry when it comes to rescuing desperate women. He knows the drill, Em figures, so he won't get the wrong idea.

What Jack needs is an excuse to leave town. Ever since rescuing four teenagers from a car wreck, he's been hailed as a hero and the attention is making him itchy, especially since his too-pretty ex-wife is back, angling for a reunion. He's always liked Emmaline. She needs a weekend date? No problem.

So when they wind up in bed together, Em chalks it up to red wine and chocolate cake, just one impulsive night not to be repeated. But Jack's pushing for more, and if she lets down her guard, either she'll get her heart crushed again, or discover that Jack's worth more than just dreaming about.

After rescuing four teenagers from drowning, handsome Jack Holland is hailed as a hero, but he’s secretly haunted by the boy he didn’t reach in time, who is still in a coma. Emmaline Neal, a police officer also involved in the rescue, has been invited to her ex-fiancé’s wedding in Malibu and is determined to show up with a date so she won’t be pitied by her family and acquaintances. Mutual friends in the small town of Manningsport, N.Y., know Jack’s good-natured willingness to serve as escort to female friends, and they arrange for him to accompany Emmaline to the wedding. The stress of the appalling wedding drives Emmaline into Jack’s arms for a passionate night, but her low self-esteem and Jack’s persistent ex-wife make it hard for her to believe he could truly love her. Higgins uses warmth and humor to develop congenial, realistic characters, making this fourth Blue Heron novel (after Waiting on You) a very appealing addition to her body of work. There's no way unattached Emmaline Neal can avoid attending her ex-fiancé's Malibu wedding. But for that she needs a date—a gorgeous date with no strings attached, someone just like divorced winemaker Jack Holland. And Jack is more than willing to oblige. With the unwanted attention he's been getting for saving some reckless teens from drowning and the sudden reappearance of Jack's faithless ex-wife, a platonic weekend trip across the country sounds just about perfect. (If only they knew!) An abundance of well-drawn secondary characters, down-to-earth humor, and skillfully handled emotional issues add depth to an already enjoyable installment in Higgins's popular series. VERDICT A reluctant hero haunted by the reckless teen he couldn't save and a smart, plucky heroine with issues of her own are blindsided by love in a spirited, truly funny, and emotionally satisfying romance you won't want to put down. Humor and heart in one stunning package! Higgins (Waiting on You) lives in Durham, CT.

Read an Excerpt

Nothing kicked off Emmaline Neal's weekend like using a Taser.

Okay, okay, she hadn't used the Taser yet and she probably wouldn't get to (dang), but the tiny thrill of anticipation didn't lie. If indeed there was an intruder in the Mcintosh house, it would be deeply satisfying to apprehend him. Barb Mcintosh suspected a sex offender, and, if she was right, Em knew exactly where she'd target the electrodes.

Granted, Barb had already admitted to being addicted to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ("That Christopher Meloni! So handsome!"). But she'd heard strange noises in the utility part of her basement, and her grandson, the notoriously creepy Bobby, wasn't home.

"Approaching cellar stairs," Everett Field whispered.

"Yeah, I can tell that, Ev, since I'm right behind you," Emmaline said. "And there's no need to whisper."

"Roger that," Everett whispered.

Despite the fact that Emmaline had only been on the job for nine months and Everett was more senior, they both knew she was a better cop. Ev wasn't the crunchi-est chip in the bag.

"You sure Bobby's not here?" Em asked Barb over her shoulder.

"No. I called him on the phone and yelled down there, so…"

"Roger that," Everett said, reaching for his holster. "Alert for incoming hostiles."

"Get your hand off that gun, Everett," Emmaline said. "And where do you get this language?"

"Call of Duty."

"Great. Just calm down. We're not shooting anyone." Taser at most, and only then if there was a struggle.

The crime rate was pretty low in Manningsport, New York, population 715, a tiny town at the base of Keuka Lake. Everett and Em made up two-thirds of the police department; their boss, Levi Cooper, was the other third. Traffic patrol, the occasional DUI, vandalism, parking tickets… That was about as exciting as it got around here. Em ran a group for at-risk teenagers, of whom there were four. In the summer and fall, when the tourists came to taste wine and swim and boat on Keuka Lake, they were busier, but this was January, and things were quiet. In fact, this was their first call in three days.

Something thumped, and Everett squeaked. Chances were that it was a malfunctioning furnace. Possibly a raccoon. Levi always said if you heard hoofbeats, expect to see horses, not zebras.

They were in the cellar now; in front of them was Bobby's apartment; to the right was the door to the other half of the cellar, which housed the furnace and water heater and, Barb had told them, several dozen jars of pickled vegetables she'd put up this summer.

Thud.

Okay, something was in there.

"It's probably an animal," Em murmured, taking the Maglite off her belt. The utility room wasn't accessible from the outside, so a person would've had to come in through the house. And Barb always locked up (again, the mighty influence of Law & Order).

Everett put his hand on the doorknob and looked at Em, who nodded. Then he flung open the door, and Em flashed the light, and something moved inside, and Everett screamed and, before she could stop him, drew and fired.

Damn! The noise slapped her eardrums hard.

"It's a cat! Everett, it's a cat!" she yelled. "Holster your weapon!"

Everett obeyed. As he did, a ball of black and white leaped on him, hissing, and sank its teeth into his thigh. Apparently Puss in Boots didn't appreciate being shot at.

"Officer down, officer down!" Ev yelled, swatting at it. "Ten double zero, officer down!"

"Shut up," Em ordered. "You deserve it." He'd missed the kitty, of course. The guy was a terrible shot.

She lifted the cat gently by the scruff of the neck and pulled it off Everett's leg. All of a sudden, Everett was grabbed around the throat by Bobby McIntosh, who apparently was home after all.

"Why did you shoot my cat?" he yelled.

"Bobby! Let go of him!" Emmaline said.

"We don't have a cat!" Barb said from upstairs. "Bobby, did you bring a cat home?"

Everett was sputtering and red-faced. Em sighed. "Let him go, or I'll have to use this," she said, taking her Taser off her belt. "It hurts."

He hesitated. She cocked an eyebrow, and, with a sigh, he released her partner.

Drat. "Thank you, Bobby," she said. So close.

"Bobby! What were you doing down there?" Barb said. "I called you and you didn't answer! Where did you get that thing, anyway? I hate cats."

"I love them," Bobby said. "I got it from the shelter."

"Okay, so we're good here," Emmaline said. Everett's eyes were wide. "Come on, Ev—let's go. You're gonna have to file a report for discharging your firearm, you know."

"I thought it was a sex offender," Everett said, his hands shaking.

"It wasn't. You're safe now, buddy," she said, patting his arm. "Come on. Back to the station."

"You shot a cat?" Chief Cooper said fifteen minutes later, staring at Everett.

"I'm sorry." Ev stood there like a chastened kid.

"He missed," Emmaline said. Now that the ringing in her ears had faded, it was hard not to laugh. "The suspect was quite fast." Levi gave her a look.

"File the report, Everett. The incident is under review, which means you just increased my workload."

"Sorry, Chief. Um, Bobby McIntosh attacked me."

"Because you shot at his pet."

"In self-defense."

"Not really," Emmaline said. "The cat was the one acting in self-defense."

Levi bit down on a grin. "Your mother won't be happy about this, Ev."

"Do you have to tell her?"

"She's the mayor. So, yes."

"Shit." Everett heaved a sigh. "Anything else, Chief?"

"No. Fill out the report and get out of here."

Everett left the office and swiped a cookie from the desk of Carol Robinson, their newly hired administrative assistant, who'd been shamelessly eavesdropping.

"Thanks for not letting Bobby kill Everett," Levi said to Emmaline.

"I was kind of hoping to use the Taser."

"Could've used it on Everett," he said. "But good to see cooler heads prevailed."

It was about as high praise as the police chief gave, and Emmaline felt a small rush of pride. Granted, it had been an idiotic call in the first place, but still.

Levi, who'd been a year behind her in high school, stood and picked up a bouquet of red roses wrapped in green florist paper and tied with a white ribbon. His look warned her not to say anything.

"Aw," she said. "Flowers for the wife? You're such a snuggly teddy bear, Levi."

"Inappropriate, Officer Neal," he said, giving her his famous "I tolerate you because I have to" look. "By the way, about that crisis negotiations class. I got you a grant. You start in two weeks."

"You did? Oh, you're the best! I take back every complaint I ever filed about you."

"Very funny," her boss said. "I'm going home. Maybe I'll see you at O'Rourke's later."

"Maybe. Tell Pregnita I said hi."

He smiled and left the office, stopping to say something to Carol before he left the station.

It was hard not to feel a little jealous. Levi and Faith had been married a little over a year and had a baby on the way. Seemed like everyone was getting married these days; Em had been to three weddings over the summer. In fact, she was considering marrying herself, just so she could register for the fun housewares.

Well. Time for her to go home, too. The O'Keefe Emergency Services Building, which housed the fire, police and ambulance departments, was about five minutes from town. Em drove past Hastings Farm, past the high school and into the Village part of Mannings-port, three blocks around a small green at the edge of Keuka Lake.

Emmaline lived on Water Street, right next to the library, and often parked the cruiser along the green where the good people of Manningsport could see it and reconsider any bad decisions, like driving under the influence. O'Rourke's Tavern, the only place in town open year-round, glowed warm and bright. Maybe she'd eat there tonight, since she didn't have any plans. But first, home to the Wonder Pup—Sarge, her recently acquired German shepherd puppy, who'd need a walk and some exercise, despite his doggy door to the backyard.

She got out of the cruiser, her breath fogging in the cold, clean air.

"Hey, Em!" called a voice. Lorelei Buzzetta and Gerard Chartier waved as they went into O'Rourke's, and Em waved back. Gerard was a firefighter and paramedic. Em saw him nearly every day at work (and also saw Lorelei, who owned the bakery and could make the angels weep with her chocolate croissants). The two had started dating a while back.

Through the windows, she could see Colleen O'Rourke, now Colleen Campbell, kissing her gorgeous husband, Lucas. There was Honor Holland and her husband, the lovely Tom Barlow. Paulie Petrosinsky and Bryce, who ran the animal shelter and had fixed her up with her puppy just two weeks ago.

Seemed like couples' night at the pub.

Maybe she'd stay in tonight. She and Sarge could watch YouTube videos of hostage negotiators, eat Kraft Mac & Cheese (don't judge, it was delicious). Maybe binge-watch The Walking Dead. She had a stack of books from the library, too. Or she could call around the Bitter Betrayeds, the name her book club had given itself, and see who else was climbing the walls.

Suddenly, the weekend spread vast and empty in front of her. No shifts till Monday. No plans other than a hockey game on Sunday—she played in the town league. She could do laundry and clean. Um…maybe buy some new towels. Go to the shooting range. That'd be fun, if solitary.

Her feet were getting numb. Time to get moving. Still, she stood there on the tiny town green, looking into the cheerful pub.

Maybe she'd drive to Penn Yan and see a movie, but it was a half an hour away, and there was more snow in the forecast. And after the big accident, everyone was feeling a little wary about winter driving.

Speaking of that, there was Jack Holland.

He stood outside O'Rourke's, staring at the building as if he'd never seen it before. Maybe she should check on him. They played hockey together, and he was her boss's brother-in-law and an EMT, so it wasn't as though she didn't know him.

He didn't move, seeming to be trying to decide whether or not to go inside the bar.

Em crossed the street. "Hey, Jack," she said.

He didn't answer.

"Hi, Jack," she said again. He jerked, then looked at her.

"Hey, Emmaline," he said, forcing a smile. "How you doing?"

"Great."

He was so not great that her heart ached, looking at him stalled there, dead in the water.

Poor choice of words.

But he was clearly not great.

"You going in?" he asked, aware perhaps that too long a pause had elapsed.

"No. I'm headed home. I just got a puppy. Sarge. He's a German shepherd. Very cute. Hopefully he hasn't pooped on the floor."

Oh, yeah, the babbling thing. See, in addition to all the above, Jack Holland was ridiculously gorgeous. As in, Hi, I've just dropped down from Mount Olympus. How you doin'? Tall and blond with eyes that were so clear and perfect and pure that they made a person think of all sorts of ridiculous synonyms for blue—azure and cerulean and aqua. His smile stopped traffic and made trees burst into flower and all that crap.

So yes, he rendered women stupid. Even women who were slightly prejudiced against very, very good-looking men. But everyone, including Emmaline, also knew that Jack was a tremendously nice guy.

"Jack? You okay?"

"Yeah!" he said too quickly. "Sorry. Just a little tired. You take care, Emma."

No one called her that. More than likely, Jack Holland had just forgotten her name. He opened the door to the pub. There was a roar of "Jack!" and "Hey! The hero!" and general cheering. The iron bell behind the bar clanged; the O'Rourke twins rang it in times of celebration. Poor guy.

Emmaline knew that the good folks of Mannings-port—and America—had been quite dazzled with what Jack Holland had done. So had she. How many people could have done what he did, after all? It was dazzling.

Which didn't explain the look on Jack's face.

Well. He had a big family and a lot of friends. Everyone loved the Hollands. He'd be well taken care of.

With a deep breath of the frigid air, Emmaline went around the corner to her house, a little bungalow. She'd left a couple of lights on for the puppy, and her little house fairly glowed with welcome.

Emmaline wasn't a Manningsport native, but she'd gone to high school here, living with her grandmother in this very house. Nana had died four years ago and left the house to Em and her sister, Angela, who lived in California. But to Em, the bungalow meant more than just home—it was where she'd found refuge and normalcy back in the day…and again when she'd moved here three years ago. She'd kept a lot of Nana's furniture, bought some of her own, painted here and there, and the result was a pleasing mix of old and new, no real style per se, but comfortable and cheery, and it never failed to make her smile.

She scooped her mail from the little brass mailbox, unlocked the door and got down on all fours. "Mommy's home," she said.

The scrabbling of paws and yips of joy were happy music of the soul.

Sarge ran to her, Squeaky Chicken, his favorite toy, in his jaws as an offering.

Emmaline gathered the puppy into her arms and kissed his furry head. "Hello, puppy," she said. She resisted the strong urge to indulge in baby talk to the dog to preserve his dignity and her own, but she couldn't help laughing as he licked her face, wriggling like a little otter.

She stood up, did a few twirls, since he loved that, then encouraged him to go outside before he peed on the floor from excitement. He galloped out, chasing a leaf across the small, fenced-in backyard.

Em flipped through her mail. A flyer for a discount on heart-shaped cookies and cupcakes at Lorelei's Sunrise Bakery—Valentine's Day preorders now accepted. No need to save that, unless she wanted to buy herself some goodies (which she did, though her uniform pants seemed a little hostile these days). A bill from the cable company. A postcard from her sister. Saluti da Milano! Right. Flawless Angela had been in Italy at, yes, an astrophysicists' convention.

Em flipped the card over. "Hello, sis! Hope you're doing well. I haven't been able to see much of Milan yet, but I hope to squeeze a few days of holiday after the convention. Hope to catch up soon! Love and kisses, Angela."

That was nice. Her sister, younger by four years, was incredibly thoughtful. She was Daughter 2.0, adopted from Ethiopia when Em went away to high school. The kind of daughter Dr. and Dr. Neal hoped to have, though they never said anything like that. Angela was brilliant, kind, cheerful and also stunningly beautiful with her glowing brown skin and enormous, expressive eyes. She'd modeled in college, even. If Emmaline didn't love her so much, it'd be really easy to hate her.

This is not my favorite Kristan Higgins book.  I know she can write funny, romantic love stories, with an HEA because I've read all her books.  There was just too much going on in this book.  I didn't need all the details on Em and Kevin's relationship, a little would have gone a long way.  The same with the backstory for Jack and Hadley - way too much detail.  IMHO this book could have been 50 pages shorter.  I wanted to like this book, I really did ... but I didn't.

Kristan Higgins has such an aura of joy and humor around her, it transcends into her books. Her stories always leave me with a healthy dose of realism and warm fuzzies wrapped in a cocoon. Reading her books is one of my guilty pleasures.

In Your Dreams is the fourth in her “Blue Heron Series” and takes us, up close and personal with Jack Holland and Emmaline Neal as they pair up together to go to Malibu to attend Emmaline’s ex-fiancé’s wedding. And I tell you, Kristan did a fine job of sketching that &$*%$%# of a Kevin!!!!!

Jack is the quintessential Prince Charming, knight in shining armor and loves rescuing damsels in distress with absolutely no expectations. Since the rescue of four teenagers from a car crash into the lake, he’s been elevated to the status of a hero and is not helping him as he battles PTSD, and keeps ignoring it. Into this mayhem comes his ex-wife wanting him back, and he is one frustrated place in his life. Going away with Emmaline to the wedding is his way of an escape not realizing that, that trip is coming up with its own set of sweet problems and he seems to be seeing Emmaline and her sweet butt with a set of new eyes!

Emmaline is the Deputy of Blue Heron, independent, sassy, kind and liked by everyone. Going away with Jack as her friend to attend her ex-fiancé’s wedding is one way pure torture, but at the same time she gets to know Jack well. The inevitable attraction lands them in bed together. As much as she blames this temporary insanity to chocolate and wine, she knows in her heart she is falling for Jack Holland. And Jack with his knight in shining armor does not make it any easy as his ex-wife seems to be everywhere, every place snagging his attention.

With his coven of sisters encouraging, butting and driving him nuts, Jack needs to re-evaluate his feelings for Emmaline as he needs more than a friendship with her. And Emmaline needs to let go of her insecurities and fear of getting hurt again, believe in Jack and give him her heart.

Witty, humor, sassy and unconditional support is what “In Your Dreams” is made of. It brings out the various facets of relationships and family as they bind you with loyalty, empathy and love.

    NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3 1/2
    REVIEW:
Everyone loves Jack Holland. Well everyone, but me. Jack is sweet, yes. Jack is uber hot, yes. Jack is the town hero, yes. But Jack as a serious I can say no to anyone problem. I liked Jack a lot in the beginning then he kinda got on my nerves. By the end of the book I liked him again. But I think he had it too easy. There should have been a lot more I need to kiss your ass for screwing up so badly.
Emmaline on the other hand I liked all the way through the book. Oh she had her moments I wanted to shake her and tell her to get over it. But, I knew she would be okay. She is one tough chick. And really should have made Jack work harder.
But all in all this was a great story. So much going and so many sensitive issues were addressed. I am looking forward to the next novel in the Blue Heron series.

You can never really tell what you’re gonna get with a Kristan Higgins book and that is never more true when it comes to a Blue Heron book. For one, you never know what kind of shenanigans the characters will find themselves in next. For example, would I ever think I would read a scene where the heroine loses the thing that makes your boobs look good in a bra (You know, that “chicken cutlet” looking thing?) while getting competitive with her ex? Hell no. But oh my God, Kristan Higgins is a genius for doing it! I have never laughed so hard while reading a book.

IN YOUR DREAMS is (finally!) Jack Holland’s book. As the sexy winemaker of the family, I was looking forward to Jack’s story the most and it ended up being better than what I expected for him! For one, there’s a deeper side to Jack that Higgins delves into. As Higgins shows why and how Jack harbors this guilt he feels concerning this accident and a few injured teenage boys, you really get a more serious side to story that balances it out well. With all the hilarious stuff that happens with Em, it’s nice to have that serious, more heartfelt pieces in the story to make it feel more whole.

Em and Jack get together when Emmaline is invited to her ex’s wedding. It’s quite the sad story because Em is still in love with the “old” version of her ex even though he has turned into a self-absorbed fitness freak. I don’t know why the girl wants to go in the first place, but bless her heart, she endures the torture anyway with the help of Jack as her date.

You can expect a whole lot of laughs and smiles throughout this story. Not only do the past characters come back and create some havoc, but Em and Jack themselves are really endearing characters. I love their upbeat dialogue and the way Higgins was able to slowly build their relationship. It really made for a genuine experience and I totally believed in their romance by the end.

IN YOUR DREAMS is an outrageously funny feel-good story. If you need an immediate pick-me-up, Kristan Higgins is your girl.

    Missing something

This book spent waaayy too much time with the hero and heroine's failed past relationships. More time then was spent developing theirs. Still I love that Jack and Em are together.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is a great contemporary romance. I loved that the attraction between Jack and Emmaline grew through the book and wasn't instant. Jack is a lovable, humble hero who loves a damsel in distress. Unfortunately, Emmaline is only in a little distress, so she doesn't think she's Jack's type. The plot is not new; a woman is invited to her ex's wedding and she doesn't want to go alone, so she ends up taking the town's nice guy (who attends a lot of events with woman who need an escort). What was different was Emmaline's history. A girl with a stutter is a nice change. Jack's PTSD is even not a typical war story. He is haunted by the boy he couldn't save from a car accident. I felt that the subject was handled beautifully and a bit true to life. There were so many laugh-out-loud moments in the book. And I think this is probably the best line in a book: "I'm a stuttering, lying, nonpregnant lesbian who puts raw chicken in her bra."
With all that to love, it was frustrating that there were parts of the book that bothered me. I didn't enjoy all of the back story. It happens in huge chunks and really takes away from the main story, especially all of the detail about Jack's first wedding. Emmaline's history was a little more important to the main story, but it could have been tidied up a bit. There was a lot going on with all the back story and extra characters that sometimes I lost focus on who was really the main couple in the book. It would have been nice to have more focus on Jack and Emmaline so their attraction was more on display and so the HEA could be a bit more believable. Finally, the epilogue was so horribly cheesy. I wanted to know something about their happily ever after, but it was like reading a cheesy gossip magazine and it almost ruined the whole book for me. I have read other books in the series and just think this one was not up to the usual standard. I will continue to read others though.

Jack and Emmaline are my new favorite Blue Heron series hero and

Jack and Emmaline are my new favorite Blue Heron series hero and heroine! (But it's really, really close, Colleen and Lucas--I swear!)

The inclusion of curling might have something to do with it, to be honest. Why don't more books have curling in them? Plus, Sarge is just about the cutest puppy ever. Really, he probably gave Em an unfair advantage here. Jack was such a fantastic hero that I almost forgot about how anxious I am for Connor O'Rourke's book. (According to Kristan Higgins, he's next. At last! Whooo hooo!) In In Your Dreams, the last Holland sibling finally gets his HEA, and it's totally deserved :)

It's possible that Jack and Emmaline might have more issues than all the other Blue Heron heroes and heroines combined...though for the most part, it works for them.

Jack--the perfect child of the Blue Heron Holland family, beloved of the whole gosh-darn town and gorgeous and amazingly nice to boot--has been waiting for years to have the chance to save someone, in an attempt to make up for his mother's accidental death so long ago. He's become an EMT, but he's always just too late to really help anyone--until the fateful night that a car full of teenagers decides to drive under the influence and goes through a guardrail and into the lake--right in front of him. Jack does all he can to rescue the boys, but the last one--the driver--has suffered brain damage and might not make it.

The entire town thinks he's a hero--except for Jack. Jack, and the parents of that boy, who's been in a coma ever since.

Now Jack's dealing with some major guilt, not to mention a healthy dose of PTSD. Oh, yeah--and his ex-wife's back in town. Lovely.

Emmaline Neal's come a long way--literally and figuratively--from the girl she used to be. A former journalist from SoCal, she's moved to Manningsport, joining the town's tiny police force after being dumped by her first--and only--love.

But an invite comes in the mail--her ex-fiance's getting married, and it's to the woman he left Em for. Kevin was once everything to her--without him, she wasn't sure she would have survived eighth grade, let alone gotten the courage to escape the merciless bullying she still lived through afterwards because of her stutter. She's got to go--right? Her entire family will be there. But she can't possibly go alone, so...

Though the wedding part of the plot had some very funny moments (the chicken cutlet episode during the "chicken"-style couples pool game, for one--a total laugh out loud-worthy scene) overall it was a much smaller part of the book than the blurb made it out to be. Jack and Emmaline spend a lot more of their time back home in New York. Jack's ex, his PTSD, Em's latent insecurities, and both Em's and Jack's families end up being larger issues overall than that single weekend. It does serve to give them the initial push, though, putting them on the path to a potential HEA, so it does its job. Two parts of it (their pretend engagement/her possible pregnancy) are practically over before they even get started, however, and almost felt like they could have been left out.

Some of my favorite parts of the book--besides the Jack-and-Em time, which was wonderful as per usual in a Kristan Higgins story--were the scenes with Em's at-risk kids and the times spent with Jack's family. Both groups are made up of such a rich collection of characters that any scene with any of them in it is a pure delight to read.

And oh my gosh--Jack's grandmother's texts. Just too funny.

In Your Dreams does rely heavily on flashbacks--some chapters seemed to spend more time recounting past events than showing new ones--and at times it was a bit too much. Yes, we needed to know a lot of that material, but perhaps it could have been condensed more? Given to us in another way? I would have gladly given up some of that Jack-and-Hadley / Em-and-Kevin time from the past in favor of more Jack-and-Em time in the present of the book.

Still, In Your Dreams was a highly entertaining read with Kristan Higgins's trademark humor and quirky but lovable characters. Seeing Jack and Em reach their HEA was extremelysatisfying.

Now, bring on Connor's book! (Please!)

    Rating: 4 stars / A-

I loved this book! I don¿t remember ever feeling or wanting to

I loved this book! I don’t remember ever feeling or wanting to describe the contemporary romance novel that I was reading as a page-turner but the description of a page-turner definitely fits this novel perfectly. I don’t think there’s any woman – single or married – that can’t absolutely relate to being single and needing a date to go to an out-of-town wedding and wanting that guy to be have the best of qualities as you go through the events of the weekend [e.g. a people person that can hold his own in conversation in case you need to leave him with a group of people while you run to the ladies room; a heartthrob (and by that we mean = description by Kristan Higgins); a thoughtful guy that will understand when you need some humor to distract you; a guy that will understand when you need some space and when you need a listener. And in this novel, not only does Emmaline Neal need a date to go to an out-of-town wedding but the groom is her ex-fiancé and the bride is bridezilla – “the woman” her ex-fiancé chose over her. Now Emmaline doesn’t only need a guy as I described with the best of qualities, she needs the perfect guy.

There is a local heartthrob named Jack Holland who meets all the qualities Emmaline could want to be her date but he’s suffering from PTSD after a recent night when he was at the right place at the right time and became a local hero. Jack is so busy trying to be the perfect guy for all the members of his family, his friends, and even his ex-wife that he’s in definite denial of his own suffering. Will Jack be able to be the man that Emmaline needs if only for a weekend? Will Emmaline be able to look beyond her own fears and be the person that can get through to Jack when he’s not even willing to admit that he has fears of his own? Will Emmaline and Jack survive a wedding weekend together and can they return home as though the weekend never happened?

Kristan Higgins is a dearly loved person and author for so many reasons. But one of the best reasons is that when you see the name Kristan Higgins or start reading one of Kristan Higgins’s books you absolutely know without a shadow of doubt that you’re going to have some fun! Whether you’re reading her comments on Facebook or reading one of her books, you’re in the midst of everyday situations that face us all – the balance of work and play, play and work, our inner perceptions of the “me” we should portray to family, friends, and community, our inner thoughts of who we really are, the actual reality that everyone sees, and the everyday moments that happen during an ordinary day or at a special event such as an ex-fiancé’s out-of-town wedding weekend. The conversations will be lively and fun with giggles and laughter. The serious moments will be there too but they are subtle not preachy like learning a lesson from a favorite teacher or mentor. The characters will experience emotions that every reader can relate to and best of all, the range of emotions are shared with an insightful honesty and transparency that allows the reader to experience the feelings of the characters, perhaps remember a time in their life when something similar happened to him/her, perhaps give him/her a gentle reminder that when a loved one, friend, parent, or child is going through something similar that there could be a different response – maybe this time the reader will remember Emmaline and Jack, Jack’s family, Kevin and Naomi, and even Hadley and respond in their own lives with humor, understanding and love. Thank you Kristan Higgins for reminding us all each day that when we see the humor in life, we find joy in simple pleasures, and delight in sharing kindness, thoughtfulness, understanding, empathy, compassion, and love with everyone that we are blessed to have in our lives.

I was lucky enough to receive a pre-publication copy of this title as part of the Goodreads First Reads Program.

I love the Blue Heron series by Kristan Higgins! Jack and Emmali

I love the Blue Heron series by Kristan Higgins! Jack and Emmaline are strong individual characters, but make a great couple by the end
    of the book.

Emmaline grew up with a horrible stutter and everyone picked on her about it. She had to learn early to be strong and not to take what
was being said about her too seriously. Then in 8th grade, she met a new student who has his own stigmas. They became fast friends
and eventually as they grew up, fell in love with each other. Kevin hurt Emmaline very badly and she walled herself off because you
can't get hurt if you don't let anyone too close.

Jack is the "Prince" of the Holland Family. Everyone loves Jack! Even his ex-wife who cheated on him within their first year of marriage.
Jack watched a car crash into the lake there in Manningsport and dove into the frigid water to save as many of them as he could. There
were 4 boys in the car, and he pulled all of them out, but one was unconscious when he was pulled out. He was hailed as the hero
of Manningsport. Of course that bothered Jack because he felt like he didn't do enough to help the fourth boy in the car. Everywhere he
goes, the townspeople call him a hero and he hated it.

Emmaline needed a date for her ex-fiance's wedding and Jack agreed to go with her. It was here that they started a relationship that
neither of them would admit to wanting. It just gets better from there.

Read the book...you won't regret it!

This is one of Kristin Higgins best to date!  The characters and the situations are real and so believable.  Being from the Finger Lakes area
makes the reading even more pleasurable as you can feel the weather and the changing seasons in the book and all of her Manningsport books.
So well written.  This is one of those books you can't put down!! So go buy and enjoy!!

Another great novel by Kristin Higgins! She brings back all the endearing characters from Manningsport, NY to tell Jack Holland's story. This book will have you laughing out loud and other parts will bring forth tears. She is a wonderful storyteller. I love all of her books.

    An enjoyable love story

This was a really enjoyable story. It wasn't my favorite Kristan Higgins book, but all of her stories are always well written. I thought the love story was believable and sweet. I love how Kristan Higgins makes you feel like the main characters could be friends you would like to have in your life. I'm always a little sad when the story ends and looking forward to the next story she writes.

Another incredibly sweet and fun read from Kristan Higgins. I so want a Jack of my own.
Jack Holland is genuinely nice guy.  He isn’t perfect but he is about as close to it as you can humanly be.  So why is he divorced and single?
Police Officer Emmaline Neal is a lot like me so I can truly identify.  Emmaline lost the man she had loved since she was in fifth grade.  Now 3 years later he has invited her to his wedding.  Jack needs to get away and if the hot hockey girl (Emmaline) needs his help as her date, why he is happy to oblige. Neither of them expected to like the other quite so much.  Now if only Jack’s ex could go away.
This is a fantastic addition to the Blue Heron series.  Sweet with some truly funny laugh out loud moments.
