Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Lila Emerson is a budding writer who supports herself by house-sitting. While on the job, she adds variety to her quiet life by habitually indulging in harmless voyeurism. One night, spying on her neighbors with binoculars, she witnesses a homicide that law enforcement officials later assure her was the first half of a murder-suicide. Disturbed by the killing, she goes to the police station where she meets artist Ashton Archer, the brother of the man who purportedly killed himself. He believes that his sibling was incapable of such violence and is convinced that he was murdered. Together these newfound allies search for the truth about the crime and wrestle with their own emotions about each other. A full-length Nora Roberts standalone novel replete with romance and suspense.

Publishers Weekly

The awesomely prolific Roberts (Whiskey Beach) entices readers with this blend of romance and sizzling suspense. Lila Emerson lives a free-spirited life as a New York housesitter and author of paranormal YA novels. But her peace is irrevocably shattered when she witnesses a woman being pushed through a window to her death. While assisting the police with their investigation, Lila meets artist Ash Archer, whose brother, Oliver, was initially a suspect. Police thought Oliver killed the woman and then committed suicide, but soon it becomes apparent that he was a victim himself. Ash is instantly attracted to Lila, and as the body count rises, he draws her into his world of wealth and privilege in an attempt to keep her safe. A multifaceted cast of characters, a plot twist involving the legendary Romanovs, and plenty of sensual romance will keep readers riveted. (Apr.)

House sitter and YA paranormal author Lila Emerson trains her binoculars on the apartment window across the way and sees a woman clearly pushed to her death. And when another victim is discovered, Lila is drawn into a sinister web of obsession and greed, quickly becoming a target herself. The brother of artist Ashton Archer is the second victim, and Ashton is also determined to discover the truth. As the couple work together to bring down the killer, their relationship deepens but so does the danger to them both. VERDICT A pair of strong, commitment-averse protagonists, vividly drawn villains—a classy, stunningly beautiful, sociopathic assassin and a soulless recluse, in particular—an abundance of Fabergé egg history, and a plot that keeps readers on edge add up to another classic for Roberts (Whiskey Beach), who lives in Keedysville, MD.

Meet the Author

Nora Roberts is the number-one New York Times-bestselling author of more than 200 novels, including Whiskey Beach, The Witness, Chasing Fire, and many more. She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb. There are more than four hundred million copies of her books in print.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

    The Collector is a keeper.

Really fun addition to the Nora library with a quirky heroine. Between her interesting job (house-sitting) and the mystery investigation, we get to tour a bit of NYC and Florence, Italy. Art, a tasty bakery, cute pets, and a secondary love story make this a definite keeper. Did I mention the stone cold killer? Plus, if Nora ever wrote the teen paranormal werewolf series her heroine is writing, I'd read it.

I love storylines set against interesting places. It's like taking a vacation. This is a romantic suspense full of interesting characters, the main one being free-spirit Lila who enjoys her chosen profession that allows her new adventures. Her latest adventure is of a sleuth. Riveting and fun.

Wish I could read this book that I bought a month ago...

But it won't "open" past the title page. I was initially told through an online customer service chat to give them a couple of weeks to fix this problem (which the customer service rep also experienced when trying to open the book.) A couple of weeks later, the book still would not open and I again spent an hour trying to have an online chat with customer service (took 3 attempts to get someone to help since my "chat" kept closing while they "transferred" me.) So here I am a month later still unable to read this book.

Great storyline, captivating characters with a twist of intrigue

Great storyline, captivating characters with a twist of intrigue, romance and mystery, The Collector by Nora Roberts is an absorbing novel that will profusely delight fans of the author and cements Robert’s status as one of the most dependable writers of our time.

The Collector follows Lila Emerson, a professional house-sitter and an emerging author, who is currently working on her second novel which is part of a series primarily designed for young adults. Working in an apartment in Chelsea, New York, gives her perfect view of the building directly opposite, and its diverse and varied occupants. With a binocular at hand, she spends much time studying the people, hoping to find inspiration for the characters in her book. What she didn’t realize is that knowing what’s going-on in those apartments will ultimately draw her into a whirlpool of deceit and danger, if nothing else.

Her daily observation draws her to a young couple occupying a particular apartment, and keeping a watch on them one evening resulted in a totally unsettling view as a heated argument between the couple resulted in the woman being pushed out of the window of their fourteenth floor apartment, plunging to her death onto the pavement below. Horrified by what she witnessed, Lila informed the police whose investigation led to the discovery of the dead body of the young man as well inside the apartment, an apparent case of suicide.

But Ashton Archer, the brother of the deceased young man who is identified as Oliver, is far from convinced. He refused to believe that his brother is capable of such ghastly murder and then taking his own life. As Lila is the sole witness to the crime, he enlisted her help in getting to the bottom of the matter. As the two investigated the case, they stumbled on a world of antiquities and crimes covered in a web of lies, deceit, and greed spanning many decades, and as they dig deeper, their own lives are threatened even as they get close to each other.

With powerful network of operators up against them, will the two unravel the whole mystery surrounding the death of the young couple? How are they connected to the crime syndicate? The Collector is a gripping romantic suspense novel by Nora Roberts with doses of humor peppered all over. Readers will enjoy this dramatic and intense story which has characters that are truly fascinating. You will feel a tinge of sadness to reach the end of the story as this is one which you’ll want to go on and on, and on.
