On the evening of Sofia Claremont's 17th birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.
A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

Editorial Reviews

Amazon - Syrma K.
I was skeptical at first wondering if it was just a cheesy vampire story trying to copy all the others out there. But I gave it a shot since it was a free loan with prime and the reviews were good. All I have to say now is that I couldn't put it down and can't get enough! I just finished book 2 and am moving on to book 3. The story is so multidimensional and layer after layer continues to shock and amaze me. What creativity!!! So many shockers and surprises and I love them all.
Amazon - Poor Me4
I know this story is geared toward the teen population, but even a granny like me found this story to be enjoyable and intriguing. I would recommend this book to everyone, teens and all between, up to and including this granny if you enjoy the paranormal genre. Great job Bella Forrest!!!!!
Amazon - Dorothy B.
What a cool world Bella Forrest creates for her humans and vampires! I appreciate her imagination! Her vampires live in tree houses and her human heroine has a skill new to me -- extreme empathy. What a wholesome, charming romance. The love triangle features a vampire prince and a human best friend, Ben, who like the iconic Gale from Hunger Games, is so bitter about his perceived enemy that he may alienate his friend, Sophia.
Amazon - Brenda Winslow
I don't know why I started this book but I couldn't stop!!! So glad that I went ahead and purchased the rest of them!! These characters are great and so far the story has kept me pulled in at all times. Can't wait to star book 2 NOW!!!

Meet the Author

I guess my life as a writer started when I was five; I'd sit under the kitchen table with my box of multi-colored wax crayons (I miss those) and create picture books. Creative writing was always my favorite subject and I used any free time I had to sit down with a notepad.

Not much has changed, except that now I have developed vampirish habits: my writing "day" typically starts at 1am.

Amazing¿. Here is another book I just completely love. This book

Amazing…. Here is another book I just completely love.
This book had that Twilight feel with a twist. Ms. Forrest completely rekindled my love for YA Paranormal Romance books. Once I started this book I could not stop and I had to read it in one sitting. Sofia was an interesting character. She was strong and completely vulnerable. In the book you are drawn to her. She lays all her feeling on the table for her best friend Ben, who is a complete hunk you being to drool over. The author gives you such a vivid description of the characters that it helps you to build a picture of them in your mind. Picturing Ben was like drinking water after being in the dessert for days. (wink). As the story progress you begin to feel sorry for Sofia because her best friend has no idea that she is in love with him.

Awwhhh how heart breaking is that. Sofia has to stand around why Ben is dating some other women while she stirs over her affections for him.

The plot begins to thicken when Lucas kidnaps Sofia. I am terrified at this point because I am not sure which way this story is going play out but I am intrigued to continue reading to find out. The author displays Sofia as a lamb being led to slaughter and as the reader you are caught in the web of various emotions. I begin to panic because I am afraid that Sofia will never see Ben again and she has completely traveled to deep down the rabbit hole that she could not find her way out.

The moment you begin to feel the despair, Derek is awaken and there is chemistry between her and him that is unmistakable. At this point I am like Ben who ….lol. Yes I have already forgotten about Ben as soon as Derek made his appearance and boy did my heart just flutter relentlessly. A girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do especially when she upgrades to a gorgeous immortal Derek was so the alpha in this story. On one side he could be just as sadistic as his brother because as we all know with alpha males you don’t touch what is theirs but he was also so kind, caring and romantic that you begin to fall head over heals in love with him.

The tension between Sofia and Derek drove me insane, in a good way. Sparks begin to fly between the two and before they could dive deeper into the romance Ben steps back into the picture and a villain begins to torment Sofia so the progress she and Derek makes with each other takes a step back due to all the drama, confusion and action ripping beat down.

I begin to sob as soon as Sofia decides that she will leave with Ben and never ever see Derek again. I am so emotional I can’t think straight. I want to smack her right now. How can you leave Derek are you out of your mid girls snap out of it.

To my surprise the author takes us on a ride that has various twist and turns and you are not sure how things are going to play out. Until Derek and Sofia Kiss. OMG they kissed. I am jumping up and down right now; I am so gitty with excitement and then you are left with an ending that drives you mad because you want to know more. Like right now, I need to know more.

"You're mine, Sofia. Many things have changed between us, but that hasn't changed."-Bella Forrest, A Shade of Vampire

Sofia wants what every girl wants at seventeen...love. She has had feelings for her best friend, Ben, for as long as she can remember, but she is not sure if he feels the same way about her. Lost in her thoughts she decides to take a late night stroll on the beach. That's when everything changes.

Sofia wakes up to a nightmare. She has been kidnapped by a creature that she never dreamed existed...a vampire. One vampire in particular wants to possess her body, consume her blood, and devour her soul until she is nothing but a dried up husk. Another wants to possess her heart, her soul, and her love.

Derek Novak is the ruler of the vampires of the Shade. He never wanted to be a vampire, but in the end had it forced upon him when he was eighteen years old. After he secured The Shade for his family, he had a witch put a spell on him so he could escape his torment....but all that changes with Sofia.

With the spell broken, Derek is expected to rule his people once more. He is presented beautiful female slaves to be at his beck and call. Among them is Sofia.

Sofia was scared and fascinated by Derek. The more she gets to know him, the more she starts to develop feelings for him. Is it Stockholm Syndrome? Does he make her feel safe in an environment in which she has no control? All Sofia knows is that as much as she tries to fight her attraction, it is there.

Sofia is threatened and terrorized from within the Shade by the very person that Derek should be able to trust above all others. Can Derek and Sofia overcome their inner turmoil and the prejudices that surround them? Is there hope for such an unlikely pair?

Bella Forrest transports you into a story with many defining moments and an unlikely set of hero's. In a narrative world overrun with supernatural creatures full of angst, A Shade of Vampire puts a new spin on a crowded genre. Sofia and Derek have a chemistry that cannot be denied.

Move over Bella and Edward and make room for Sofia and Derek! A Shade of Vampire is unique, passionate, thrilling, and full of intrigue! A blend reminiscent of "Beauty and the Beast" and "Twilight", this story grabs you from page one!

    First thoughts
I haven’t read a paranormal book with a vampire in over three years. I was boycotting vampires!!! For some reason the premise of this book intrigued me, and I was ready to break my three year dry spell.  A shade of Vampire was a “test” to see if I was ready to love vampires again.

    My thoughts
Ok. Let me start off my telling you I LOVED this book!!!! Be prepared for me to totally gush over my love for the characters, the world, and the author!! A shade of Vampire was brilliant. It was the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and fantasy all rolled into one.

A shade of Vampire is about a girl named Sofia Claremont, who on her seventh birthday is kidnapped, and brought into a world that is fair more dangerous then she could have ever imagined.  She is taking from everything she knows, brought to this island, and told that she is a present for the prince. Only the prince is a vampire who has been asleep for 400 years. Now she is in the middle of battle, a brother’s one sided feud, and she is trying to not became attached to Derek because she can’t possible fall in love with a vampire.

A shade of Vampire is written in dual POV’s of Sofia and Derek (vampire prince), which I didn’t find tricky at all and actually loved. With Sofia you got to see her exploring her feelings for Derek, her understanding of the life she has been dealt, and how she is able to overcome it all, and remain strong. One thing I loved about Sofia is that she was almost never helpless, she had survival instincts and she was ready to face her fears and take action.

With Derek’s POV you see his vulnerability, his attraction to Sofia, his past, his constantly struggle with being a vampire. I loved him! Some other main characters were Vivienne, Derek’s sister, and Lucas his brother. They have a big part in the story!!

A shade of Vampire introduced us to a new world, a new problem, some creepy villains, and some witches, and I must say I’m in love. The author Bella forrest has just gained a new fan.

My one problem with this book is that I wish it was longer!!!!!! I was so sad when it needed. I knew it wasn't a full length novel going in, but I didn’t expect to love it, and read it so fast, so it felt even shorter. I wanted to know more. Never have I been so sad as to finish this story and ready to jump into book two, and have it not be available. What am I to do? I need more Derek and Sofia. I need to know more about the Shadowhunters. I need more creepy vampires in my life, period!

Overall, A shade of Vampire was a great teaser, and I’m ready for more. I recommend it to all YA lovers, all paranormal lovers, and book lovers in general. I challenge you to read this book and not love it. Haha!!

I absolutely loved this book. I haven't read a vampire romance book in a while, so this was definitely refreshing to read. I love how Bella Forrest is able to come up with a whole new different concept to your typical vampire romance story.

From the very beginning I was captivated by the whole aspect of the story, it starts of with Sophia, a seventeen year old girl that longs to have her best friend, Ben, see her as more than a friend. She has struggled by seeing him with other girls and doesn't know what to do anymore. One night she decides to a stroll by the beach, when suddenly a handsome stranger appears and kidnaps her. When she wakes up she is scared to find herself chained and helpless. Everything is going wrong with her and things start to get a lot worse when the stranger that kidnaps her is non other than a vampire, that has taken a liking in her and her blood.

When she is selected to be part of Derek's personal slaves, she is shocked to discover that he is a legendary vampire prince that is respected among his kind. Confused and desperate to find a way to escape, Sophia embarks in a new adventure where she'll have to learn how to survive and most of all learn how to not fall in love with the very prince that can't let her go. In this new world, Bella Forrest, describes how Sophia is trapped between a vampire that wants to have her for her blood to one that desperately wants her to love him back.

I really enjoyed the flow of the story, it has a great plot that is impossible to let go of the book, because you just want to know what happens next. It is very well-written and it all ties together in the end. I would have liked to see more scenes between Derek and Sophia though, but overall it was a great story. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I recommend everyone to give it a try, you will not regret it.

    A short vampire story

A Shade of Vampire is a short story/novella about vampires. It's short but interesting and is a great first book setting up for what I hope will be a great series.

Sofia is kidnapped on her birthday and brought to The Shade. It is a secret island that the vampires live on. She has been brought there to be part of the prince Derek's personal slaves. Derek has been asleep by a witch's spell for the past four hundred years and has just woken up.

I was surprised by the way the story unfolded. I liked how it starts to build up but doesn't give too much away. I liked Sofia, she is very outspoken and seems to stand up to the vampires. Derek is drawn to Sofia right from the start and doesn't want to hurt her. Sofia doesn't come around to the idea of her and Derek until the end. There wasn't really any romance in this one, but there was action and suspense. Near the end there is a surprising person who shows up. We don't get much background information about the characters so I'm hoping in the coming books we do. Overall I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to the reading the other books in this series.

This e-book was provided to me by the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

The end of this book left me fulfilled yet knowing something more was going to happen. Yay...no cliffhanger! When a book is a part of a series, I know the author needs to make you want to read more. What was so great about this book was that the author left you wanting to read more while still actually finishing the story that was contained in this book. Not only did I like the way the author ended the book, but the story itself was different in many ways than your typical vampire/human story which I definitely appreciated. I have found myself backing off from reading some of the paranormal type of books lately because there are so many that are so similar. I didn't feel that way with this one at all. The characters in this book aren't as typical and they have some depth. Yeah, the basic romance story line is there, but there is more to each of the characters which is what I really liked. I will definitely be continuing this series and soon so that I know what happens to Derek, Sophia, Ben, and The Shade.

'A Shade of Vampire' is a young adult paranormal romance that follows our leading lady, Sofia Claremont, as her mundane human existence is abruptly turned upside down once she is kidnapped and forced to become a slave of a vampire coven in a place called The Shade. Sofia is even more horrified when she is handpicked by the prince of these vampires - although Derek Novak is mysterious and gorgeous - to be his personal slave. She knows her only chance at survival is escape, but she has no idea where she is - let alone how to leave. As the days go by, Sofia finds herself fascinated and charmed by Derek. He isn't the horrible monster that she originally thought him to be. As for Derek, after awaking from a four hundred year nap, he finds the young human Sofia to be intriguing and irrestistible. Little does he know that Sofia will soon hold much more than just his life in her hands...

This was a really enchanting and fun novel that I easily read in a couple of hours. It's short for a book, so I literally found myself flying through the pages at a fast rate because I got caught up in the story and couldn't put it down. Sofia is a great leading lady - she's witty, confident, and refuses to let the vampires control her fate. But she also has a tender side, which is full of compassion, trust, and love. Derek was a mysterious and super gorgeous vampire love character. I liked how we got to see some character growth in both Derek and Sofia, given how short the book was. It's obvious from the beginning of the book that these two are going to fall in love, but getting there is always the best part. I really liked the world of The Shade that the author created and I liked getting to know more about it and its history. There were parts of the book that were a bit cliched and you could see them coming a mile away, but there were only a couple of times this happened and it really didn't bother me. I loved watching the relationship between Sofia and Derek grow and was eager to see how things would play out between them. Overall, this was a quick, fun read that fans of paranormal romance will definitely enjoy. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next book to see what Derek and Sofia will encounter next - and I'm really hoping it will be a longer book!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

    Awesome read

I am not really into the whole vampire craze, but I took a chance on this book. I was sucked in quickly and could not put it down. The characters are well written. The author gives you just enough to keep you hooked. Each book only gets better. B&N didn't offer books from this author so, thank you Kindle app! There are several twists in the storyline throughout the series that kept amazing me. I thought this book was good, but the ones that follow are even better! Do not sit on this series!

I don't think it's fair to rate a book low because it isn't being offered.

First, I am completely and totally in love with this cover!  I think that is what made me come back to this story over and over again.  It is gorgeous in a creepy , shade of night sort of way, right?
But then I started reading this story and yep, I fell in love all over again. A  Shade of Vampire   just sucks you right in, and you are immersed in the world of the royal vampires.  We don't even get to see what kind of life Sophia has before she is kidnapped and taken to the island where all her dreams and nightmares seem to exist.
After reading the entire and very short story, I see why we don't really go into much detail of Sophia's life before becoming a "slave" to the Novaks.  And I say slave loosely, because she isn't treated like that from Derek's stand point; but being kept against your will is still considered slave behavior.

Anyhoo, anyone else laugh when Sophia got the nice guards to talking?  I was not expecting them to be like, "dude" at all.  I was expecting a more refined demeanor so I think I was pleasantly surprised that the guards were cool.  I know that had nothing to really do with the story at all but I don't know I liked it and it solidified that I really would like Bella Forrest's writing style.  Small details like that, really make me happy because it shows me how the author can make everything flow easily through the story.
Yea, I'm weird.  I've accepted it.

The characters are awesome in Shade of Vampire.  I like Sophia a lot and I like that she really thinks through certain areas before doing some things.  She is like a leader in her own right just as the sexy prince, Derek, is too.
I love Derek!  Although, I think he should have been more kick ass to certain people in the early pages of the book, but it still made for good entertainment.

For such a small book, a teaser if you will, there is a lot of world building that really gives us a great view of The Vale.  I love the tree house idea, especially since I never had tree house growing up.  I now want one as an adult, just like the villas in A Shade of Vampire.  Thank you, Bella Forrest for realizing my adult wish now!

And then there is the one thing I didn't like about the story and his name is Ben.  (Now, I know what you're thinking: that's who you didn't like? What about Lucas?)  And yeah that's it.  Lucas is the antagonist, of course he has to be a dick and I don't like him but he is still crucial to the story.  But Ben? Uggh! He just gets in the way of my idea for the story everyone.  I feel like he keeps Sophia from being herself and he thinks Sophia can't think for herself.  I just don't like him at all.  Sorry.

Overall, though, A Shade of Vampire was a great story that made me shoot through it until I was shocked to know I read it in about an hour, and then reeling from the fact that I don't have the second one.  Because the ending to this little morsel will have you saying, WHAAAAT???

A Shade of Vampire was an interesting read. It's short, so there wasn't a lot of room to introduce the amount of conflict Bella Forrest did, then resolve that conflict before the end of the book. It left the plot feeling a little hurried and the character's reactions a little stifled.

It felt like an introduction book to the world of the Shade, which I'm guessing is what it was meant to be. I would have enjoyed more time for the relationships to develop and for Sofia to come to terms with her enslavement, but there was enough there to be intriguing and give hope that the next book, which is significantly longer, will provide the missing details.
