Kenner (Wanted) strikes a chord with her depiction of cool, collected Sloane O'Dell, a highly successful young cop noted for being one of the best in her field. Sloane takes a case off the books for a friend, investigating the disappearance of an exotic dancer. Her ministrations lead her into the club and into the arms of infamous outlaw Tyler Sharp. Sloane knows Tyler has ways of skirting the law; she also knows that he makes her feel more vulnerable, desirable, and free than any man has in her life. While the plot isn't exactly innovative—the hard-boiled female cop going soft for the bad boy who upends everything she stands for—Kendall creates a likable, offbeat character in Sloane, one who makes the reader root for her even as the predictable tale unfolds. Right and wrong.

Good and evil.

Black and white.

These are the parameters of the world in which we live, and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise—­who argues that nothing is absolute, and that there are always shades of gray—­is either a fool or trying to con you.

At least that is what I used to believe.

But that was before I met him. Before I looked into his eyes. Before I gave him my trust.

Maybe I’m a fool. Maybe I’ve lost my balance and my edge.

I don’t know.

All I know is that from the moment I met him, everything changed. One look, and I feared that I was in trouble.

One touch, and I knew that I should run.

One kiss, and I was lost.

Now the only question is, will I find my way back to who I was? And more important, do I want to?

Nothing is ever as easy as it should be.

My dad taught me that. He served as a special agent with the FBI for twenty years before leaving that post to become the chief of police in Galveston, Texas, an island community with enough crime to keep his life interesting, and enough sunshine and warm weather to keep him happy.

During the years I was growing up, I’d watch as he spent hours, days, weeks, even months putting together a kick-­ass case against some of the vilest criminals that ever walked this earth. Thousands of man hours. Hundreds of pieces of evidence. All those little ducks lined up just the way they should be—­and it didn’t make one bit of difference. The defense would spout some technicality, the judge would cave, and poof, all that work went down the drain.

Like I said, nothing is ever easy. That’s the first truism upon which I base my life.

The second is a corollary: No one is what they seem.

My stepfather taught me that. He was a fast-­rising major league baseball player that the press took a liking to. They called him the golden boy, predicted he’d spearhead his team to the World Series, and did everything but genuflect when he entered a room. What they didn’t report was the way he beat my mother. The way he forced me to watch, threatening that my turn was coming. His hands, his fists, a broken beer bottle. Whatever was handy. I’d flinch with every blow, and when her bones snapped, I’d feel it too, and my scream would blend with hers in some horrific, discordant melody.

Somehow none of those hospital visits were ever reported in the local paper, and on the rare occasions when the cops showed up at our house, nothing ever came of it. Harvey Grier had the face of a prince and the smile of a homecoming king, and if his fourteen-­year-­old stepdaughter called the cops one night with a bullshit story that could ruin his reputation and queer his lucrative deals, it must be because she was your typical bored teenager. Certainly it couldn’t be that she lived with the monster day in and day out, and saw all too clearly under the pretty boy disguise.

My stepfather is dead now. As far as I was concerned, that was a good thing. The man wasn’t worth anything except driving that second lesson home: There are monsters hiding under the most innocent of countenances, and if you don’t keep your guard up, they will bite you. And hard.

The takeaway? Don’t take anything for granted. And don’t trust anyone.

I guess that makes me cynical. But it also makes me a damn good cop.

I sipped champagne and thought about my job and those two axioms as I leaned against one of the white draped pillars in The Drake hotel’s cloyingly elegant Palm Court restaurant. I didn’t know a soul there, primarily because I’d crashed the party, and I was doing my best to blend with that pillar so that I could simply sit back and watch the world—­and the people—­go by. I was looking for one face in particular, because I’d come here with a plan. And I intended to stay in my little corner, holding this pillar, until I spied my mark.

I’d been standing there for an hour, and was beginning to think that I had a long night ahead. But I’d survived worse stakeouts, and I am nothing if not determined.

I’d been to the Palm Court once before when my dad had me for a weekend and we decided to have an adventure. But tonight most of the familiar tables had been moved out, giving the guests room to mingle around the elegant fountain and massive floral arrangement. As far as I could tell, the dress code for the evening was anything that had premiered during Fashion Week, and the only reason no one was pointing a finger at me and snickering was that my off-­the-­clearance-­rack dress was so utterly pedestrian that it rendered me invisible.

Flowing strains of classical music filled the room, provided by an orchestra tucked into the corner, but no one was dancing. Instead they were mingling. Talking, laughing. It was all very proper. Very elegant. Very festive.

And I was very much out of my element.

My natural habitat is Indiana, where I’m actually a bit of a celebrity within the force as the youngest female ever to make detective with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. I’d come to Chicago because I’d been going out of my mind while I rode out a stint on medical leave, and when one of my confidential informants, Candy, asked me to track down her former roommate who’d fallen off the planet, I’d decided to do a little off-­the-­books investigation.

According to Candy, Amy had been working as an exotic dancer at an upscale Chicago gentleman’s club called Destiny until about two weeks ago. “She’d been there almost a month and was jamming on the tips. She even liked the other girls. And I’m pretty sure she was banging one of the owners. So it wasn’t like she had a reason to just split.”

To my way of thinking, banging the boss might be reason enough, especially if the boss is the one who told you to move on.

“Yeah, but she would have told me,” Candy said, when I suggested as much. “She might take another job or even move, but she’d call once she got settled. Something happened.”

Normally, I wouldn’t worry. After all, twenty-­two-­year-­old exotic dancers pull up stakes and disappear all the time. Maybe they’re just trying to shake off the old life. Or maybe they’re following a guy. Amy had been on her own since she was fifteen and knew how to handle herself. She was clean, so I didn’t expect that she was laid out in a heroin den somewhere. Plus, I knew she fantasized about Prince Charming riding in and whisking her off into the sunset, so maybe she’d realized that banging the owner wasn’t going to stick, and she’d set out for New York or Vegas or someplace else with a surfeit of rich, horny men.

But I didn’t believe any of that. Candy had been more than seven months pregnant when Amy moved to Chicago, full of promises to come back loaded down with presents for the baby and, most important, to be there for the birth. Assuming the kid came on schedule, that was just over two weeks away.

I hoped to hell she’d just gotten carried away with a guy and would surface any day now with stories of hot nights and wild sex. But I worked homicide, and it was in my nature to fear the worst.

While I was making the drive from Indiana to Chicago, I’d put in a call to a friend in the Chicago PD, and he’d confirmed that she wasn’t cooling her heels in a Cook County cage. I was somewhat relieved to know she was either staying clean or playing it smart, but I’d secretly hoped that she’d gotten arrested for shoplifting and was too proud to call Candy for bail.

I’d rolled into Chicago just after seven on a Wednesday night, and I’d made Destiny my first stop. The place was clean and classy, with drinks that weren’t watered down, girls who looked happy to be there and not at all used up, and a clientele that skewed heavily toward the professional end of the spectrum. The place had a full bar, including Guinness on tap, and a decent menu that included some rather delicious cheese fries.

I’d certainly seen worse places, and as I sat at the bar and looked the joint over with a cop’s eye, nothing wonky popped for me.

Enter the Second Truism: No one is what they seem. Or, in this case, no place is what it seems.

I learned that when I met Agent Kevin Warner, an FBI buddy, for breakfast the next morning and he laid out a whole list of bad-­ass shit that he thought was going down in that club. He tossed allegations around like candy. And when he hit the Mann Act charges—­prostitution, white slavery, and other nasty felonies—­my ears perked up.

“Slow down, cowboy,” I’d said. “They got busted for that shit?”

“Fucking immunity,” Kevin said. “They helped shut down a white slavery ring that was working off the West Coast and spreading all the way toward our fair city.”

“They?” I repeated.

“Black, August, and Sharp,” he said, naming off Destiny’s three owners—­three celebrated businessmen who were the toast of Chicago. I mean, hell. I’m not even from Chicago, and I knew all about those guys. “They’re slick, those three,” Kevin continued. “Slick and smart and as dangerous as sharks in dark water. Got the immunity deal to hide behind, and that cut my investigation off at the knees.”

I nodded. Immunity was part of the game. The whole point was to protect a suspect from prosecution. If there wasn’t guilt there in the first place, that protection really wasn’t necessary. In other words, it was a rare suspect who was given immunity without being dirty.

Frankly, the whole idea of giving a suspect immunity irritated me, but I knew it was a necessary evil. Besides, I figured that justice would find a way. At least that was what my dad always said when one of his defendants pulled a technicality out of their ass and shot the finger at the law.

Karma really could be a raving bitch, and I wondered if she was baring her teeth in the direction of Black, August, and Sharp. Were they as dirty as Kevin said? Were they simply good citizens who shared their knowledge with the Feds? Or were they somewhere in the middle?

I didn’t know, but I figured the odds ran toward the first or the last. “How broad’s the immunity?” I’d asked.

“If I have my way, they’ll wish it was broader. I’m dead certain they’re neck deep in all sorts of shit. Gambling, smuggling, money laundering. Bribery, kickbacks, fraud. You name it, they’re in it. But they’ve got powerful friends, and I’m not authorized to officially pursue any of it.”

I heard the frustration in his voice. He wanted these guys—­wanted them bad. I got that. There were a lot of reasons I’d become a cop, but in the end it all boiled down to protecting the innocent and stopping the bad guys. To making sure the system worked and that those who crossed that line paid for the breach.

I lived and breathed my job. It was both my redemption and my salvation. And I was very good at what I did.

    I love J Kenner's writing style; it's kind of addicting. I told

    I love J Kenner's writing style; it's kind of addicting. I told myself I wasn't going to read that much and ended up going further than I thought. And even though this is only in one POV, I still felt like I knew Tyler enough through dialogue and the MC's thoughts. 

    I really loved Sloane's voice. She's a cop who's on-leave after being shot. But then she gets thrown into a mystery, and because she's been itching to do work, she jumps in to to help a friend. But what she finds is so much more than duty. In Chicago, she finds Tyler Sharp. Intentionally, actually, and is planning on using seduction to uncover his secrets and find Amy, the girl who's missing. And instead, Sloane is forced to to decide if losing the only man who gets her is worth the picture-perfect black and white rules of her job. Sloane's character development was great. She was confident, sassy, and determined. She was vulnerable to love and to Tyler. Because, before him, she'd never been pushed to open up and let someone in. And no one had ever looked past her mask to see who she really was as a person. Tyler just got her.

    And she got Tyler Sharp, the most mysterious man in Chicago. I didn't know what to expect from him, although I was intrigued about his story after he was in Evan's book. He's basically a stranger to everyone, because he doesn't give anything of his life away. But one woman opens him up to love and passion and heat. Tyler is dangerously sexy, loves control in the bedroom, and is also sweet and caring. He's like the perfect blend of good guy and bad boy, though he straddles the line often. In many of his ventures, he uses his money to help women with their futures. But he's also got some illegal activity on the side, something that Evan wanted out of in Wanted. And it's a constant struggle for Sloane to ignore the bad and focus on his good heart. Tyler pushed her to new heights and made sure to catch her when she fell. 

    Their relationship was STEAMY. Sensual. Passionate. A little on the BDSM side, and even a little sweet. Tyler was all about that control and dominance, and oh boy, was this a hot read! But it was more than sex, more than the uncontrollable heat between them. It was about opening up and letting someone in. It was about love and the power it has to overcome the obstacles.

    The plot was about 75% romance and 25% mystery, which is why this is getting 4 stars from me. I wish there had been more emphasis on the mystery. I actually liked that Tyler found out that Sloane was a cop early; anywhere else in the story-line, and it would have created unnecessary drama. BUT. I wanted more of the suspense. It was like one chapter, and then bam! the case is solved. And I was glad to see Evan and Angelina again, as well as Cole and Kat (I'm really excited for their story, assuming it's the two of them). 

    Heated was a very hot and sensual read with two characters who weren't looking for love and who were bombarded with all the feelings that came with it. I love these knights, and I love their ladies. Another great book in this series!

    Missed the mark

    I found myself skimming page after page to find something that resembled reality. I understand that novels are works of fiction, but this plot was way passed that.... a supposedly good cop gets made, and she compromises her career for a criminal with a good heart! REALLY??

    Sloane Watson is a detective on forced medical leave after taking a bullet to the hip. She's going stir-crazy without anything to do, so when her confidential informant friend Candi tells her about a missing person, Sloane is up and off to Chicago to do a little off-the-books investigation. There, she runs into Tyler Sharp, a powerful and shrewd business tycoon whose slightly shady business practices aren't exactly on the up-and-up. She tries to go undercover as an exotic dancer at Tyler's club to learn more about the missing woman who once worked there, but ends up seducing Tyler instead - not exactly a hardship. Sloane and Tyler become tangled up in one another, drawing Tyler into Sloane's missing person search and Sloane into Tyler's networking events and business practices. But Sloane's time in Chicago is quickly coming to an end and together Sloane and Tyler must make some big decisions about their personal life choices and their future together.

    Sloane is a confident and determined detective, used to working hard and pursuing justice like a dog with a bone. She has a strong ethics and lives by the code of the law, a trait that causes many problems in her arrangement with Tyler. And honestly, made her a little uppity, self-righteous, and annoying for the first part of the book, especially considering the whopper of a secret she's carrying around. Thankfully, Sloane grew and became a character I could actually root for in the end. She's tough and independent, though rational thought seems to fly out of her head when she's around Tyler.

    Tyler is a self-made man. Guarded against strangers and most of the world, he keeps his cards close to his chest, only discussing important things with his business partners and close friends. Originally growing up on the streets, he met his business partners Cole and Evan there and together the three of them have become the richest, most powerful and influential businessmen in the Chicago area. Unfortunately, they still struggle to cast off their criminal reputation, despite being (mostly) clean. Tyler is the kind of guy that if something needs to be done, he'll get it done however he can, not exactly breaking the law but maybe just bending it a little. He's the epitome of dominant and powerful Alpha male. Tough and commanding, he makes a great compliment to Sloane's personality and character.

    This book is easily one of the best erotica novels I have read in a long time. It has an actual romance plot - not just the let's-get-into-bed-now-for-no-real-reason plot of many erotica books, but an actual I'm-falling-in-love-with-you-and-here's-all-the-believable-reasons-why plot typically seen in a traditional romance novel. The romance was sweet and tender as they both learned to let the other into their insulated world, but with the tough edges and conflicts befitting Sloane and Tyler's personalities and personal issues. The book also has a good mystery sub-plot that is kept exciting and wrapped up without rushing forward like an afterthought. And as for the actual sex scenes that make this an excellent erotica novel? Holy Toledo, Batman!! Excuse me while I go take a cold shower...outside....in Alaska. This book is definitely a scorcher!! The sex was alluring and sensual, expertly playing on a reader's word-evoked sense of touch, smell, and hearing. The sex was varied too. Sometimes sweet, slow, and tender. Other times rough, fast, and hard. I've read a lot of romance and erotica over the years, but even this one had me blushing sometimes. And that was definitely a good thing!

    Perfectly paced and plotted. After reading this one book, I am a J Kenner convert and am quite happily going to check out as many of her other books as soon as possible.

    I highly recommend purchasing a copy of Heated by J Kenner. May I suggest the audiobook version? The narrator, Heather Smith, does a fantastic job bringing Sloane, Tyler, and all the other characters to life and I honestly believe that it was her reading of this book that made me love it that much more. From a 4.5 to a perfect 5!

    Disappointing... I am sorry to say this, but I did not enjoy He

    Disappointing...

    I am sorry to say this, but I did not enjoy Heated as much as I enjoyed Wanted. Heated was just an ok read for me. I found Evan and Angie's story in Wanted to be much more interesting than Tyler and Sloane's story. I believe that I did not find Heated as interesting because I did not connect with, nor did I like Sloane, the heroine, at all. I found her to be very judgmental, hypocritical and annoying. I got so tired of hearing her constantly say that she could not be with Tyler because he was a criminal and she was a cop, when she knew absolutely nothing about him or his friends, and she had her own secrets that she was carrying around. I really did not even understand Tyler's attraction to Sloane, because I just did not feel the connection between them, which is so weird for a J. Kenner book, because her books are all about the draw and the attraction and the seduction. Just think about the Stark Trilogy. Wow!! I love that Damien and Nikki Stark. This one was missing all of that, at least for me it was. Nevertheless, I love J. Kenner's books despite this one only being alright to me, and I am anxiously awaiting Ignited, Cole August's book.

    HEATED is the second instalment in J. Kenner’s contemporary romance, adult Most Wanted erotic series focusing on three friends and the women they love-Evan Black, Tyler Sharp and Cole August-three friends who bonded as young adults and now earn a living with legitimate and illegitimate enterprises. Told from first person POV (Sloane), this is Chicago entrepreneur Tyler Sharp and Indianapolis police detective Sloane Watson’s storyline. 
    On medical leave from the Indianapolis Police Department, Sloane goes on the hunt for a missing friend whose last known whereabouts were listed as an exotic dancer at a gentlemen’s club in Chicago known as Destiny-enter Tyler Sharp-the owner and proprietor who is the number one suspect on Sloane’s list of suspects. Going undercover as a stripper is easier said than done when Sloane’s real identity has been known to Tyler all along. It is only when she reveals the true nature of her ‘private investigation’ does Tyler begin to understand-Tyler’s past and that of Cole and Evan are shrouded in mystery, illegal activity and underground connections and Sloane is determined to prove their guilt.
    The relationship between Sloane and Tyler is sexual, sensual, exotic and hot.  HEATED is an erotic series and a good portion of the storyline is sex, the build up to sex and more sex.  Our leading couple has one thing in common and great sex is something that cannot be ignored. The love  scenes are intimate, intense and provocative. Tyler Sharp is a man who needs control both in and out of the bedroom.
    The secondary characters include Tyler’s friends Cole and Evan as well as some of the ladies of which Tyler has ‘invested’.  There is more to Tyler Sharp than an exotic dance club-the man is an enigma that Sloane is slowly unraveling bit by bit.
    J. Kenner continues the world building with the inclusion of the previous storyline characters as well as the skyline and familiar places of downtown Chicago.  The atmosphere is charged with the nightlife, the game players and, the sights and sounds of The Windy City.
    The Most Wanted series has a connection to J.Kenner’s Stark Trilogy but each instalment is a stand alone that ends with a happily ever after. HEATED follows a few days in the life of two people who under normal circumstances would have probably met inside a courtroom but for a missing young girl, have found love  at a time in their life when they needed it the most.

    Delivers exactly what you expect and a bit more....

    I’ve become a J. Kenner groupie.

    It just kind of happened. It started with her Stark Trilogy; I fell in love with damaged rich boy Damien. The books were like classy, well written Fifty Shades, minus the dumb heroine. Now with her Most Wanted series, she’s taken a step back from a love story that spans three books and went the route of one alpha male (*sigh*) / one love story per book. I so love that format MUCH better. I have no patience when it comes to a happily ever after. I want it now!

    Story / Tempo

    These three Most Wanted boys from the streets can’t seem to shake their crime reputation, despite owning reputable businesses all over Chicago. It might be because they aren’t the most squeeky clean of businessmen. They do what needs to get done and do it any way they can. What I LOVE is that when you first start reading this second book, you have no clue if Tyler is going to be a good, honest man or if he’s actually playing a game and he’s going to be ILLEGAL trouble for our detective, Sloane Watson. That’s the thing with these guys, they seem to bend the law for their uses. Will Sloane give up her morals or is it not that simple of a question? Indeed…

    It took me a quite a bit to get into this story. There’s a very good reason for that and it’s called “story set-up”. It appeared to me that it took Ms. Kenner about half the book to get to the crux of the story. Yeah, the main point of every romance is to figure out how the guy and girl are going to get together. But in this story, you’re already enjoying the “togetherness” (tee, hee) and you’re wondering who’s going to sacrifice what to make their relationship happen. Or does anyone need to sacrifice anything? Hmmmm….

    Characters

    I utterly and completely forgot Tyler’s personality from the first book. Normally I would go back and scan the first book looking for Tyler. I really have no clue why I didn’t in this case. But I wasn’t in the dark long. Ms. Kenner uses the supporting cast of characters to give the reader a clear picture of Tyler and his relationship with the fellow “Knights”, as they’ve been dubbed by their mentor. So far between the two books, I think I like Tyler the most because I haven’t seen a character like him before. Not to say he doesn’t exist in other books, but in this story I enjoyed Tyler’s lighter physical attributes paired with a bad boy/alpha male who liked to live life crazy and honestly.

    I didn’t deem Sloane worthy of Tyler until later in the book. It was how she started with Tyler, using him for information, that set Sloane and I off on the wrong foot. But she made up for it later so she’s worthy now!! I ended up loving her tough, independent, and fierce personality – it matched her fiery haircolor :)

    Even though I count this series as a guilty pleasure of mine, Ms. Kenner has become a go-go author for me. You know, one of those authors you know you can always rely on to write fascinating stuff and not let you down?! I seriously CAN NOT wait for the last installment in this trilogy, the next book in the series, Ignited, which is expected out September 9th.

    Not Much to this Book

    This is 300+ pages of bad dialogue, boring sex, cardboard lead characters, no interesting secondary characters, and little if any plot. Don't waste your time and money. I've enjoyed other books by this author but I think she completely missed the mark with this book.

    Fantastic.

    I lived seeing evan and angie again. J.Kenner is an awesome writer. I also loved "take me" at the end. I loved damien starks triology. Both fantasticly written.

    Sloane’s father was FBI and it was only natural that she would follow in his footsteps and become a detective. While recovering from a gunshot wound and forced time off, one of her confidential informants ask that she look into the disappearance of her roommate. Sloane decides to go undercover to look into what happened to Amy an exotic dancer and her CI’s friend.  The search leads her to Chicago and a gentleman’s club where Amy was last employed.  No one seemed to know where she is or what happened to her. When Sloane attempts to get a job at the club, she is turned down and has to go to plan B, get up and personal with the owner Tyler Sharp one of the “Knights” the most celebrated businessmen in Chicago.  With information pointing to their involvement in illegal dealings Sloane needs to get close to Sharp to ferret out their secrets and locate Amy.
     
    Tyler and Sloane are not prepared for the connection that they feel for one another and Sloane cannot believe the lengths she is willing to go to be with him.  Sloane is a dedicated officer and she is really good at her job but Tyler pushes her to cross the line.  He was more than what one could see on the surface and if she was any other woman she would have held on tight and never let him go. But more was at stake than what she wanted; she had to find Amy before it was too late.  Tyler surprises her by helping her get personal information on Amy that he had from his club and also goes with her to Amy’s old apartment to look for possible clues to where she may have gone.
     
    Who is Tyler really?  Is he the self-made man that the world sees and admires or is he something else?  Sloane has always been able to see the real person and the real person that she sees is not all good, but he is not all bad either.  When Sloane realizes that Tyler really understands her better than anyone else ever has she is afraid to take the next step but also afraid not too.  Can Sloane let go of her abusive past and allow Tyler to take her to a place that will heal?  Is Tyler capable of giving Sloane the things she needs and can she meet his needs?  You can find all the answers in the pages of this incredible book. ~TSRBR

    Would I recommend this book: Yes!  Wow…hot, steamy and full of mystery is the only way to describe this fantastic book by J. Kenner!  This book ticks off all the boxes for those that want to be totally enthralled until the last page of a good read.


    Would I read other books by this author: Yes!  I’ve read books by this author before and continue to be impressed with the scope of J. Kenner’s skill as a writer!  This is a must read author and I cannot wait to read her next book!

    I loved this story. I read to escape reality - to get away from it all. This story was perfect. Sloane's constant battle inside her head competing with her heart and desire. Of course the steamy sex always helps too!

    Hot, sassy Sloane is on a mission to save a friend so she seeks out the sexy, mysterious Tyler.  When those two come together, watch out for the explosion!  This book is filled with hot and steamy scenes, a bit of humor and enough suspense to keep you hooked.

    A perfect follow up to the 1st book in this series and an even sexier alpha male dead set on getting what he wants!

    A must have!!

    This series is fantastic & I love Ms. Kenner's work. Great story, characters are well developed, story moves well & awesome sex!

    Great read.

    This is one of the better ones I have read. You can really get into the characters and seem to feel what they are feeling.

    I loved this book! I was stupid enough to start reading this at

    I loved this book! I was stupid enough to start reading this at 11 at night and ended up staying up to late. I just could not put it down. There are no words for how amazing the sex scenes are. Wow. Not only is the physical stuff amazing but the story is so good. You are interested in the characters and fall for them, root for them. Another great book!
