The book starts out with a man in jail on the eve of his hanging and progresses through his escape scene. As he travels into Scotland to find the person who testified that he killed a young girl (of which he is innocent) he falls ill and stumbles upon an empty bothy where he passes out. He is discovered by a young lady known to have healing skills and she takes him home to tend him. In the meantime, there is a whole other story unfolding about the life of this young lady which is just fascinating. As the story progresses the two lives become entertwined and a romance develops. At the same time there is a mystery as to the disappearance of the young lady's father and the two must unravel the mystery in order to prove the innocence of the gentleman she has nursed back to health (Mac).
This story truly was so good I couldn't put it down and had to finish it in one day. It was very good and I would highly recommend it! Although this is listed as part of a series it is indeed a stand alone story that can be read without having to read the other books.
