Kate Donnelly has avoided the Caribbean for the 15 years since her parents died in a diving accident, but her brother needs her to look at the books of the family salvage business, which is dangerously close to bankruptcy. Holden Cameron is a British accountant (and former military diver) with the authority to shut down the Donnellys. The lazy Caribbean climate is the perfect atmosphere for romance, and the attraction between Kate and Holden erupts into potent love scenes. Meanwhile, divers are disappearing, and Holden notes a disparity in the diving schedules and the amount of treasure recovered. Biography

Extensive and versatile, Elizabeth Lowell's résumé of titles (in almost every genre) is as long as the list of her various pen names. She's written science fiction, mystery and romance. She's also penned historical fiction and collaborated on a movie novelization. So prolific is Lowell that she and her husband, Evan Maxwell, have had to create a whole raft of pseudonyms for her books.

Her earliest work, from the 1970s, is science fiction and is written under her actual name, Ann Maxwell. The romances she and her husband began writing together in the early '90s are under the same name, because their publisher wanted a female author’s name on the cover. Their Southern California mystery series featuring the divorced lovers Fiddler and Fiora are written under A. E. Maxwell (Ann and Evan), while their joint novelization of the 1992 Val Kilmer movie Thunderheart is under the name Lowell Charters (his middle name and her maiden name.)

Her biggest solo success, the romance novels that have taken her repeatedly to The New York Times bestseller list, are credited to Elizabeth Lowell -- a combination of the couple’s middle names.

Lowell’s romances are noted for their sass and, of course, their sex. But her characterizations, particularly, draw high marks. "Elizabeth Lowell's talent is enormous," wrote The Romance Reader in its review of 1984's Forget Me Not. "She has made a well-deserved name for herself by crafting likable, plucky heroines and enigmatic but intelligent heroes." And, in 1996 the Chicago Tribune wrote, "The protagonist she has chosen for her hardcover debut, Winter Fire could give a Navy SEAL lessons in survival."

Lowell embarked on a popular series in 1997 with the publication of Amber Beach, which introduced readers to the Donovan family, titans in the menacing world of precious gemstones who must dodge murderers, thieves, and power-hungry governments to protect their business. Of the first in the series, Kirkus Reviews wrote, "A romance that offers all the sexual tension, adventure and squishy clichés that fans of the genre could possibly want."

When Lowell was getting started as sci-fi writer Ann Maxwell, she was writing on legal pads while caring for her two young children. Evan was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, covering international crime. In the early 1980s, after he had already collaborated on three mystery novels with Lowell, Maxwell decided to quit daily journalism and write fiction full-time.

The couple has since become a cottage industry of genre fiction operating out of their Seattle-area home. They collaborate on some projects, go solo on others. Lowell has described a seven-day-a week work packed with deadlines, an organized effort that starts out with book outlines that typically take about a month to draft as well as character sketches. Then the writing begins.

"My fiction deals with problems of strength rather than problems of weakness," she told Contemporary Authors. There is no appeal or purpose for me in reading -- or writing -- fiction that portrays incessant, excruciating, and pointless pain in the lives of characters."

Good To Know

Readers are surprised to find out that the books Lowell writes with her husband are true collaborations. "In fact, a lot of people, once they know, say, 'Oh, I know who did this in the book, and I know who did this,' and they're almost invariably wrong," she told the Los Angeles Times.

Two of the most intriguing time periods for Lowell are medieval England and the post-Civil War period in the American West. "In both cases it was a time of expanded possibilities for individuals, regardless of birth or heritage, to create a better life and, ultimately, a better world, from chaos," she told Contemporary Authors.

    Kids on nook

    Bn, cant something be done to these kids that use the nook as a chat room? Adults come here for reviews and all we see are kids using is as chat rooms or role playing. Pkease do something.

    Ms Lowell is one of my favorite writers for books written with a lot of thought, feeling, and anguish in them. Sometimes I feel that all of the 'flowerly' stuff annoys me a bit but you just know this particular writing style when you read it. I can always appreciate a good Lowell read and this was one of them. 




    One of my favorite books is The Reef by Nora Roberts because treasure hunting, diving, the tropics, and boats, oh my! So delightful! So when I saw the blurb for the latest by Elizabeth Lowell, I cheered! This book did not disappoint. It had a thrilling mystery which kept me guessing. She kept leading me in the wrong direction that I didn't want to believe but whoops, then we head down a different path. :) Loved it!

    4 1/2 star suspense! Big fan of Elizabeth Lowell's romantic suspenses and this one didn't disappoint at all.
    Kate Donnelly grew up with a love and respect for the sea but after she had to deal with the deaths of her parents alone while on a dangerous stormy night dive, she left the sea behind forever – or so she thought. When her brother, Larry, begged her to come to St. Vincent to oversee the books because the British government was sending someone to investigate the salvage of what they all hoped was the wreck of the Moon Rose, she goes only because without her expertise the family business, Moon Rose Limited, would go under forever.

    Holden Cameron isn’t pleased about the assignment handed to him to investigate suspected theft amidst the activities surrounding the Donnelly’s salvage diving under a British contract, but he has to admit the appeal picks up a lot after meeting the beautiful Kate Donnelly. When things start heating up on the Golden Bough, and in the small house on the beach, Kate and Holden find themselves in the middle of a mystery that might be more dangerous than night diving in a storm.

    NIGHT DIVER by Elizabeth Lowell is everything I expected from the suspense queen. Hot steamy nights, and tension-filled days on a ship that’s rumored to be cursed where theft may be the crime of the day but murder isn’t off the table, Ms. Lowell builds the suspense even while journeying us through a steamy romance between Holden and Kate. Her setting of a tropical island and the dangers and expertise of salvage diving makes this one a perfect escape from the every day. My only pet peeve is the head hopping between characters’ points of view because it slows things down, but the action and excitement of the activities on the Golden Bough make up for it in treasure hunting abundance.

    I highly recommend NIGHT DIVER by Elizabeth Lowell to anyone who is already a fan or loves a good mystery while mentally escaping to a tropical island and a steamy romance between an ex-British Navy S.E.A.L., who is dreamy sexy, and a smart, tough, and brash heroine you’d love to have as best friend. This is one that should definitely be at the top of your summer beach reading.

    Really not good.

    I have been known to read some of Lowell's suspense novels in 24 hours. I've owned this for 3 weeks and can't get past page 44. This must be an old manuscript she had kicking around in a drawer somewhere from which she decided to try to get some use. I can't work up any interest in the fate of the heroine & really can't stand the hero. I've only read her suspense novels but I can't remember anything being even close to this bad. Very disappointing.

    A modern sea adventure

    Some romance and adventure diving in the ocean for treasure; but a little slow at times. Kate has to overcome past fears of the water to come aboard her grandfathers boat in search of treasure. Meeting Holden cracks the protective shell she has worn ever since a horrible tragedy occured in her family years before. Will the chance of a new love give her courage to face life again?

    Dive in!

    Lowell doesn't disappoint. Read this one in less than two days, which would have been less if it weren't for commitments between. Great beach read.
    The only thing missing was the hint of threat from a shark that never surfaced. Could have made it that much more thrilling....still a fun read.

    Not very original

    Night Diver was predictable from the beginning. The cliches were abundant and almost funny. Seriously this book should be listed under the genre of Romance Novel. Dumb and cringe-worthy.
