When she lands a job with a hotel caterer, she’s just looking forward to the promise of leftover food and a meager paycheck. Wealthy hotel owner Jace Crestwell frequently shares women with his best friend, Ash. He notices Bethany working at his sister’s party, and he feels an unusual surge of desire—and a surprising desire to have her all to himself. Before the night is over, Jace, Bethany, and Ash go to bed together, but when the threesome is over, Jace realizes he feels more than lust for Bethany and cuts Ash out, putting a strain on their longtime friendship. Banks’s (Rush) latest erotic romance is well written, with realistic dialog. The scenes in which Bethany and Jack’s childhood history is revealed are touching, as were those with the shelter volunteers. Narrator Adam Paul does a pretty good job with his interpretation of this book, though his breathy depiction of Jace during the bedroom scenes sounds a little like Clint Eastwood; his inebriated Bethany is more caricature than character.

His gaze settled on a young woman picking up glasses and plates from the tables. It was the second time his eyes had settled on her that night though she hadn’t been out much, just periodically to do clean up. She wasn’t one of the servers. He hadn’t seen her circling with trays of hors d’oeuvres or champagne. She was dressed in black pants, a white shirt and an apron.

He studied her a long moment before realizing what it was that had interested him. She looked completely out of place. And he wasn’t entirely certain what gave him that impression. The longer he stared at her, the more he thought she looked like she should be an attendee at the party. Not cleaning up after the participants.

Her hair was upswept into a messy bun like Mia wore sometimes, secured with a clip, and the result was a sexy mass of mussed hair that begged a man’s hand to tug at it and set it free. Midnight black, unruly curls, some of which had escaped the clip and tumbled down her neck.

She was slight, not as curvy as he usually liked his women. Narrow hips and small breasted but enough curves straining at the white button-up shirt to be tempting. The rest of her was small. Dainty. Almost fragile.

When she turned, presenting her a view of her face, he sucked in his breath. Her bone structure was small. Delicately rendered. High, prominent cheekbones, almost as if she were underweight and a small chin. But her eyes. Jesus, her eyes. They were enormous in her otherwise small face. A brilliant shade of blue. shock blue, like looking at ice. They were startling against the jet black of her hair.

She was mesmerizing.

Then she hurried away, her arms straining at the weight of the tray that held all the dishes she’d cleared from the tables. His gaze followed her across the room until she disappeared through the door for the kitchen staff.

“Not your usual fare,” Ash murmured beside him.

Jace broke from his reverie and turned to see that Ash had already finished his dance with Mia. A brief look toward the dance floor told him Gabe had reclaimed Mia and the two were once more solidly glued together. Mia’s eyes were alight with joy and laughter, and some of his earlier tension eased. She was in good hands. And she was happy.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Jace said, an edge to his voice.

“The chick bussing the tables. Saw you checking her out. Hell, you were practically undressing her with your eyes.”

Jace frowned and remained silent.

Ash shrugged. “I’m game. She’s hot.”

“No.”

The denial came out more emphatic than Jace would have liked. He wasn’t even sure where the emphasis came from or why he was suddenly tense.

Ash laughed. “Loosen up. It’s been awhile. I’ll go work my charm.”

“Do not approach her, Ash,” Jace growled.

But Ash had already sauntered away in the direction of the kitchen, leaving Jace standing there, fingers in tight fists at his sides. How the fuck was he supposed to explain to his best friend, a friend he regularly shared women with, that he didn’t want Ash within a mile of this one?

    “I think I just expected more.” ~Under the Covers

    I can’t tell you how excited I was to crack open this book! I really enjoyed book one in this series and the character I fell in love with was Jace. The overbearing brother who shares his women with his best friend. And then I started reading FEVER and…wondered what happened?

    Let me start by saying a big reason why I thought this was just an okay read was the heroine. I wasn’t too excited about her from the very beginning. She’s not very strong in general and to pair her with such a domineering man, well he steamrolled right over her sometimes. I think he needed someone that would’ve been able to challenge him more, like Mia did for Gabe, not a delicate flower. Plus there’s the fact that I never really get over the fact that I’m not sure what her motivation for being with Jace really was. See Bethany is a little down on her luck, has been her whole life, and has learned to live on the streets and in shelters. Then in swoops multi-millionaire Jace and tries to save the day. Not doing the best things for me.

    But not only was the heroine not my type, Jace turned into a bit of an a$$…you know what I mean. He doesn’t listen to reason when his best friend Ash tries to protect him. He acts like a douche to EVERYONE around him in this book, for a good part of the story! Including one instance with Ash and Bethany where I almost wanted to reach across the pages and slap him silly. What happened to the man I fell in love with in RUSH?

    But all that aside, the story in general is ok. There’s some intrigue, generated mainly by Bethany’s “brother” who is not really her blood brother, more like a foster brother. He gets in with some bad people and their way of getting back at him is through Bethany so Jace has to step in and protect her.

    The book is sensual as usual with a Maya Banks read and Jace was hot, of course, but… I think I just expected more. At the very least I expect Jace to show up, not his alter ego.

    I don’t think I can even say this book made me excited to read about Ash, but I’ll make myself remember that he was hot in RUSH and that he was at times the voice of reason and the strong but sensitive lead in this book, who got the sour end of the stick where his best friend was concerned, and then I’ll be all excited and prepared to read his story.

    Sounds a bit like I didn’t like it, I did, it was enjoyable, just not as strong of an addition in this series as I would’ve liked.

    I am so embarrassed that I purchased this book!  I had no idea f

    I am so embarrassed that I purchased this book!  I had no idea from the summary that it was basically just porn for lack of a better word.  I wanted a quick, romantic chick lit kind of book and this was NOT it.  If you took away all of the shockingly detailed sex scenes even the story line wasn't that great.  The man literally put a collar on her.  Yes, like a dog.  To show the world that she belonged to him. Thank Goodness I can delete this trash from my library!!!!!

    Really no need to buy the book as plot spoilers has revealed everything including the ending. Bn needs to start fineing and banning these plot spoilers that does this. Maybe then they will stop ruining books.

    Great.

    Fever was a overall pleasurable read. I like Rush just a tad better but it was worth the money. It had a mysterious plot anx overwhelming twist.

    This book was terrible! It should not be classified as romance.

    This book was terrible! It should not be classified as romance. There is nothing romantic about group sex. How can anyone identify with a character who has such a lackadaisical attitude towards sex? As a fan of 50 Shades, I have been seeking "the next best thing", and let me assure you this is not it. There is nothing romantic about a woman trading sex for a burger, fries, and orange juice. Save your money. The Crossfire series is better. At least the main character has traits women can identify with in Crossfire. The women are cherished and, worshipped. This storyline is not erotic, passionate, or romantic. It is, quite simply, trashy.

    Fantastic!

    Wow......Jace and Bethany's story was hot...hot...hot! The author did a great job keeping you interested from the very beginning. I love this author and she hit a home run with this trilogy. Can't wait till the next book is released!

    Fever is the second book in the Breathless Trilogy and concentrates mainly on Jace. The book picks up where Rush basically left off, and they all are attending the engagement party for Mia and Gabe. Across the room, Jace spots a woman that fascinates him and before he can do anything about it Ash approaches her and arranges for her to spend the night with them. Jace and Ash usually share their women but for some reason Jace doesn’t want to share Bethany. Then Bethany disappears in the morning and Jace is frantic to find her. Ash doesn’t understand why his friend has become obsessed with Bethany and for that matter neither does Jace. He finally finds Bethany in a homeless shelter and vows to take care of her. Jace is usually in control of everything not only in the boardroom but the bedroom as well. Bethany is ready for someone to take control of her life and take care of her.

    This is a passionate love story about how two complete opposites learn to trust and love. The author continues to include Gabe and Mia and it definitely adds to the story. The friendship that has developed between Bethany and Mia is nice as Bethany is not use to having any girlfriends. It is also good to see that Jace and Ash’s friendship doesn’t change because they will no longer be sharing women. This book emphasizes that some families are not the ones you are born into but the ones you create. It will be interesting to see what is in store for Ash in the last book, Burn as he vows not to fall in love like Gabe and Jace.

    On page 199....bla bla bla...boring Maya!!! Im skiming pages to get by! Rush was so much better! Oh Bethany, says Jace, your so tender and beautiful, and I never want to hurt you, but i want to inflict so much pain on you, and you're gonna love it....oh please...i'd rather be reading "oh my" every other sentence!!!

    Not a big fan of Fever

    These are the first two books that I have read by this author. I could hardly wait for this book to come out.
    Very disappointed with this book and skipped pages, just to get to the end.
    Big fan of Gabe and Mia. Jace and Mia, not so much.

    Not up to Maya's standards

    1st off let me say that if you're writing a review, don't tell everyone the ending of the book!! I have read every one of Maya's books & loved them all. This book was very good but there was a lot of repetitous emotional stuff that I had to skip through in order to be able to finish the book. I absolutely hated the way the male characters talked in this book! What is with the "gonna get it for you" "be anything you need"? What happened to "I'M gonna get it for you" I'LL be anything you need"? Read the free sample & you'll understand what I'm saying. Sorry to say this book wasn't up to the standards I have for a Maya Banks book but hey, you can't win em all!

    I am a big fan of Maya Banks books, especially her KGI series, but Fever was absolutely the WORSE book of hers that I have ever read.  Oh, where to begin!  I know that as fellow romance readers, especially of  erotica romance,  it is important that the story is HOT but somewhat believeable.  Here is where the problem begins for me.  First of  all, Bethany, a woman who is homeless and has been liviing on the streets and in shelters for the last 4 years, meets 2 complete strangers (Ash and Jace) and decides to trade sex for a hot meal and a place to sleep.  Really?  Talk about a dangerous situation that I think a girl who has had to survive on the streets by herself would never  do no matter how hot the guys.  Then she literally becomes a kept woman by Jace who provides her with money, clothes, food, and a place to stay and all she has to do  is service him.  But yet, one of their fights involve him saying that she is living in his apartment and she leaves hurt.  REALITY CHECK:  That is what a kept woman is when a man is providiing you with everything in exchange for sex.  Why does she act so surprised and hurt?  Also, Bethany had a drug addiction problem in the past that still haunts her but has no problem going out with the girls to the bar and getting totally wasted.  After all she said, " I had a drug problem not a drinking problem."  Huh?  I guess she thought it must have been worth it though, since the whole purpose of all that binge drinking was to have "drunk sex" in her high heel shoes since everyone knows that is the best kind of sex.  Yet the men just thought they were cute and funny and couldn't wait for sex.  Just the kind of message I think all young women need to hear.  But I really "LOVED" the end when Bethany said that now that she was getting married to Jace that she wanted to better her life.  Her solution:  going to school so that she could help others.  HELLO!!!  You are marrying a multi-millionaire.  Don't you think that is she really wanted to help, she would throw some of that money at the homeless shlelters that are underfunded to help others like her?  I even thought the sex scenes were  somewhat boring. and  repetitive.  Even Jace's character was unbelieveable to me-falling in lust/love in  less than a day?  Don't think I really want to read Ash's story if this is how the rest of the  trilogy  evolves.

    OMG! I can't believe the glowing reviews for this book. I have read almost everything Maya Banks has written and this is by far my least favorite. The characters are so unbelievable. I have no problem with love at first sight but I couldn't buy into this storyline.

    Good read, could have been better.

    I think for me that the book just had too much going on as far as problems go... I prefer to stick with one major problem rather than a bunch of drawn out ones.. At first I even wondered why he was drawn to her, he did not know her and had never had an interaction with her so why would he go out of his way to basically provide for her every need? I feel like there was not a develpment of the actual relationship and that she was with him because she felt obligated and had nowhere else to go.

    Disappointing

    I fell in love with the first book but was greatly disappointed with this one. The love story between the main characters was very unbelievable which made it difficult for me to even get into the book. I'm hoping the third story will be much better.
