Publishers Weekly

Ashley reacquaints readers with the small town of Carnal, Colo. in her fourth Colorado Mountains contemporary (after Lady Luck). Faye Goodknight, the shy yet beautiful town librarian, has long admired the recently widowed Chace Keaton, a police detective. As Chace gets to know the virginal librarian, he realizes that her pure soul may be the balm that might heal his tortured heart. The romance between the hardened cop and the quiet bookworm is rich with angst and a plethora of sizzling love scenes. Ashley’s characterization of Faye will resonate with readers as they discover that the woman who has been quietly saving herself for the right man is a multidimensional character with hidden depths. With the addition of a healthy dose of mystery surrounding the murder of Chace’s wife, Ashley has created the perfect escapist fare. (Aug.)

Meet the Author

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

    Another must read

Once again I don't know how she does it. Once I start one of Kristen books I don't want to put it down. I was sad when I finished, last one in the Series. Faye was charming and Chase was the perfect dream guy. Out of all the Mountian men I have to say Tate and Lauren story is my favorite (Sweet Dreams) I have read it twice. lol.

    One of my new favorites

This one is tied for favorite in this series, partly because I can relate to the geekiness that is Faye. Chace is so freaking yummy! Their story breaks your heart, makes you cry, makes you laugh. I loved that backbone of steel Faye showed time and again that she was the right woman to stand beside Chace through life.

    I love this author

This is my 4th book by this writer. Just read the part where "Miah" called the hero Aslan. Got tears rolling down my face. To use your own colorful, but surprisingly eloquent vernacular, Ms. Ashley, you are "the s__t"!!

I¿ll be honest, I wasn¿t fully looking forward to this book. I d

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t fully looking forward to this book. I don’t know why really, I guess I just have a harder time getting into the stories with older characters. Their lives always seem to have child custody issues and other ‘real’ life themes that I find it harder to embrace. I read to escape and I like to indulge in a story for fun, there are times when the whole children/ex-spouse thing just gets annoying.

Regardless, children were not an issue in Breathe so I was able to rest easy. If you’ve read the other stories in the series you know that Chace is the police officer who was married to someone he hated. We learn more about this story than we had in previous books and I found that particular story line interesting. I liked how Chace fit into the whole scandal involving the town and how he dealt with his feelings over his past actions.

Then we have our heroine, Faye, who is a 29 year old virgin. Yes, you read that right, I’m putting it out there. 29 year old virgin. At first when I read that fact I had so many eye rolls, but really it didn’t become an issue and it wasn’t taken to the extreme like it has been done in some books. Did Faye need to get herself a little something-something while in college? Yes, but eh, I liked her so I went with it. Faye might not be as experienced as some of my favorite heroines, but she’s no Anna either.

I really liked Chace as an alpha, he starts the book out as such a jerk. I mean really, such a jerk, the things that come out of his mouth. They had my jaw on the floor. He was down right mean. But then in true Kristen Ashley fashion she’s able to turn Chace around so that I fell in love with him. The relationship between Chace and Faye moves fast, I think they’re calling one another baby and honey within like the second meeting, but he was a hot guy so who cares. I’d probably call him honey too. Chace is a more laid back KA alpha and I normally enjoy mine a little more hard core (read: Possessive and territorial), but Chace does it well. He was the right mixture for me.

Okay, so this review was kind of rambly because I really don’t have many notes on Breathe at all. It takes a while for the action to pick up, but once it did I was engrossed int he plot and our characters. The fact that it took so long for the action to get started is the only that held back my rating a star level. What can I say I like a good car bombing to spice up those middle chapters.

Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite Breathe is book 4

Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite

Breathe is book 4 of the Colorado Mountain series written by author Kristen Ashley and read by Emma Taylor. Breathe is a contemporary romance novel. Faye, the local librarian, has been attracted to Chace for years. Detective Chace Keaton feels the same way about her but neither know about the other’s feelings. The town of Carnal’s Police Department had some serious problems as in corruption! Chace’s dad was an unsavory character too. Chace’s first wife was murdered and, while it was a long way from being a happy marriage, it has left him feeling guilty and angry. The barriers began to come down and they began a whirlwind romance. Faye notices a young boy taking books from the library without checking them out. She and Chace realize the boy is in trouble and needs help. Faye to the rescue!

Breathe by Kristen Ashley is romance with a lot of sizzle. Virginal Faye is a delightful character. When she became angry she was hilarious. Faye is soft, clever, authentic and stunning. Chace may be the typical alpha male but he also showed a lot of emotion. Faye and Chace worked well together. Malachi/Jeremiah was a great addition to the story line.  Breathe is a amazing, sweet and sensual romance. Kristen Ashley is a talented writer; she has successfully created memorable and likeable but not perfect characters. Characters need to have flaws to be realistic. This is the fourth book in the series but it does a great job of standing alone.

Do Not Buy This Book! I repeat: Do Not Buy This Book! I've been

Do Not Buy This Book! I repeat: Do Not Buy This Book!
I've been reading romance for decades and this is the 1st book that made me gag. I read another book by this author that I enjoyed - "Sweet Dreams". It was my 1st book by Ashley and I found the 1st part compelling. I had things I really did not like in the rest of the book, but I disregarded those elements. It turns out that this author is so prolific because she writes basically the same characters and relationship dynamics in every book.
I think her early books are better, but her latest books show a writer who has nothing left in her creative juices so she just uses a bag of manipulative tricks. Nothing rang true in this story!  The most basic flaw was that I never got a clear picture of  what the heroine and hero looked like. That's how shoddy the work was. Faye was described as having "bubblegum lips". What on earth? To me, that sounds like a clown! Her features don't add up: auburn hair, crystal blue eyes, high rounded cheekbones from American Indian blood and those bubblegum lips. The hero wasn't flesh and blood either so he never seemed desirable to me. Even worse, they were both so immature - like, high school immature. The title should have been "The Jerk and the Lap Dog". He was constantly ordering her around and she couldn't obey fast enough, she was such a twit. She's supposed to be 29 but every remark begins with her saying, "Um..." or "Uh..." like a 13-teen-year old. And she's supposed to have a Master's degree in Library Science!
How can there be a romance when there's no conflict? She briefly rebels just once, but he uses sex and she instantly goes right back to being spineless. But what really made me gag was the cloying, syrupy sweetness. Who in real life ends every remark with, "...baby." Or, "...honey." Every exchange between them! The author always brings in a child/children to showcase how "loving" and perfect her heroines are. In this book, it's a homeless, abused boy who, of course, only trusts Faye. Chace's guy friends say they're happy he has such "sweetness" in his bed. The boy is referred to as "their" boy - Chace and Faye's - in order to pull on the heartstrings. And Chace refers to Faye as "his Faye". And all this sweetness is relentless! Even the premise is phony. A 29-year-old virgin? Who is described as pretty and with an exaggerated hourglass figure. So it's not like guys wouldn't have been attracted. The other thing that was gag-inducing was the contrived cuteness that was supposed to be funny when she acted mad. I'm stunned that so many readers have been able to swallow all this phoniness and accept it as believable. Nothing rang true to me in this book.

Perfect! I have never read a Kristen Ashley book I didn't lik

Perfect! I have never read a Kristen Ashley book I didn't like and Breathe is no exception. This has strong, interesting characters, a riveting, lengthy, action packed romantic story and great dialogue. Chace is a cop and a good guy, but has made some mistakes in his past and is having a hard time forgiving himself. He is a tough, alpha male, but isn't afraid to show how much he cares about the woman he loves. I love the way he treats Faye and how he is both tough and yet vulnerable and love the epilogue that wraps everything up. There is nothing better than getting lost in a Kristen Ashley book.
