An estranged couple is brought together by fate and tries to make a go of it again, but the tensions that drove them apart still exist, and unbeknownst to them, they have a shadowy, malevolent enemy, too. Ten years ago, James, Lord Kirkland, and Laurel Herbert tumbled into love and marriage with lightning speed, but things fell apart in one violent moment before their first anniversary. Leaving her aristocratic husband also created a rift with her parents, and with nowhere else to go, Laurel moved in with her brother, Daniel. Together, the siblings used the allowance James granted her to fund Daniel's medical education, then opened a clinic and a shelter for women and children in a poor Bristol neighborhood. Now, fate will intercede when James is in Bristol on business and, weakened by a bout of malaria, is set upon by thieves. Bloody and unconscious, he's brought to the clinic, where Laurel treats him—and can't quite bring herself to stop him when, in a dreamlike hallucination, he reaches out to her sexually. The next day, Laurel lets him leave, oblivious to their lovemaking, but must revisit the situation when she learns she's pregnant. James is unwilling to abandon his child, and the two reconcile. Working on old grievances, misunderstandings and secret yearnings, they begin to believe in their love again; however, just as happiness is in sight, Laurel is attacked by a new enemy made when she stood up for a vulnerable victim, and James must turn to his closest friends to save the brave, principled wife he knows he can't live without. Putney continues her Lost Lords series with two passionate lovers who are convinced love can't save the day; she then forces them to mine their own vulnerabilities before they can truly be happy with each other. Elegant and tender; a compelling sweep of romance and adventure with a gratifying undertone of social justice elements.

Ten years ago, teenager Laurel Herbert and James, Lord Kirkland, fell hopelessly in love and married after a whirlwind courtship—only to separate soon after owing to opposing values. Now, because of a chance mugging and a brief, passionate interlude, they are back in each other's lives attempting a civilized rapprochement—all for the sake of an unplanned baby. But their paths have taken new turns, and Laurel's work with abused women and children, while sometimes dangerous, is too important to give up, but can it be reconciled with her situation as James's countess? VERDICT A deeply caring, capable heroine who struggles with her feelings about violence and a ruthless, protective spymaster hero with a well-honed sense of justice gradually work through their differences to find common ground in this provocative, penetrating romance. Undeniable passion wars with clashing views on right and wrong in another memorable masterpiece from one of the genre's best. Gorgeously done. Putney (Sometimes a Rogue) lives in Baltimore.

    A good read!

This long-awaited sequel for the Lost Lords series was very good, yet I was a touch disappointed because it felt more contrived than what you could usually expect in a romance novel. Given that the hero is a spymaster, I think that more could have been done to explore his character's duality and that of the heroine than what was done by Ms. Putney. Still, it is very entertaining to read about them and you may find yourself sitting up late finishing the novel!

Laura left her husband ten years ago not because she didn't love

Laura left her husband ten years ago not because she didn't love him but because of something she saw. She never thought to see him again and has put to good use the money he gives her. She does everything she can to help others in need and has built a great place for those in need to go to. Now she crosses path with her husband and she has another passionate encounter with him that leaves her no other way than to talk to him. James has always loved Laura but he let her leave. Now he sees this as a great time to work things out. He is very proud of who she has become and all she has did. He wants to show her it can work between them. They both have did things that have made them enemies with others but one enemy is not going to let things go.

James or Kirkland as he is mostly called is a great man. he has did some bad things but he has a cause for doing them. He may seem hard at times but his line of work has called for it. He will risk his life to help people in need and he tries his best to show nice people he means no harm. He never pushes Laura but he tries in his way to show her he cares for her still and loves her. Laura has such an amazing heart and will give her last dime to help those in need. She loves Kirkland but doesn't think she can move past their history. She sometimes rushes into danger without thinking but it is usually to help someone. I like how she is so sweet and caring.

This was a great read as both main characters have such a drive to help those in need. I liked Laura right away but wasn't sure about Kirkland. He won me over when he stood up to her parents. They both have love between them but don't think it will work. Kirkland worries Laura will run again but he doesn't want to push her to stay with him. He gives her the space she needs. Laura has to learn that life isn't perfect and that even great people sometimes have hard decisions to make. There is danger as someone is after Laura and her amazing maid Violet. They both don't want to be a victim and try to manage things themselves. I have to admire Laura for what she does. I felt sorry for her at one point in the book as I know what she was going through is like. The love between the two may not always show but you can tell they are perfect for each together. If you like danger and great characters give this one a try.

    more from this reviewer

I like the Lost Lords series and this story fits right in. Mary Jo always has twists I never could have thought of and they work well with her people. I sort of expected to be pulled into the story or them to jump out and join me. The Lords were brought up in difficult modes as children. They were sent to Westerfield Academy to be brought up to snuff for the Ton. They remain friends. James married Laurel but when he killed an intruder in their house in front of her she bolts to the country. 10 years later they meet when he is beaten and taken to her. They decide to try again and try to hold the vows they swore at their wedding. Please read this book. There is action, romance and friends to keep everyone grounded. Enjoy! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

I received this book for free from a publisher in exchange for an honest review.
How It Made Me Feel:The start of the book was a bit slow and forced for me, but after a few chapters, it felt like it picked up a bit.  At first, I was a bit turned off to Laurel's character.  She seemed so stiff and it was hard for me to get a feel for her character, but she loosened up and became more realistic as the book went on.  I enjoyed James' character and I enjoyed learning more about him as the story went on.  It was an interesting twist with the Methodist background and the Zion House, but I really liked how the author tied everything together.
What I Thought Didn't Work:I wasn't too sure how I felt about Laurel's brother, Daniel throughout the story, and now that I've finished the book, I'm definitely not a fan.  Though some of his brotherly characteristics shown through, I did not like how uptight he seemed.
Why It Got That Rating:I greatly enjoyed the history, romance, and character development that occurred through the book and was happy I read it. It was a fast and easy read that was as entertaining as it was romantic.
Who Would I Recommend To:I would recommend to an audience of 18 or above, as it is a romance novel with some steamy bits, but also to someone who enjoys Regency Romance.
Last Impressions/Remarks:I enjoyed reading this book and it has made me think about reading the rest of the books in the series

I usually like Putney books but this one is a slow read. It feels like she fleshed out the story but forgot to add in the interesting dialog, character development, and fun that I'm used to. Very blah this time around.

This was only my second book by Mary Jones Putney and I'm sure I'll read more. I guess I'll always have a problem with reading books in a series out of order, which I have done once again with this one. It's the sixth book in the series, but I've only read this one, obviously, and the one before it so I'm a little behind in the complicated relationships that go on in this series. It seems as if everyone is related somehow. This book we have James, Lord Kirkland and his estranged wife, Laurel. They've been apart for over ten years and an unforeseen consequence has brought them back together. They try to reconcile and learn to be a married couple again. I wasn't much interested in their problems, but found myself liking the secondary romance a little more. It was between a lady's maid and the valet. All the action took place in the last couple chapters and I think if there would've been more action I would've liked it better. I am planning on reading more by Ms. Putney and especially the beginning of this series.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Not Quite a Wife ¿ Kirkland¿s story ¿ the book I¿ve been waiting

Not Quite a Wife – Kirkland’s story – the book I’ve been waiting for! I was finally going to bed early, but it didn’t happen. I stayed up to see what would happen. In addition to an intricate relationship, this book has a most inventive chase scene! And a climax that made me feel I was at a flat out run!
