What lies beneath…

Clare Cermak’s adjusting to a new man in her life—and a lot of ghosts. The passing of Clare’s aunt gave way to a sizeable inheritance of not only money, but also the ability to communicate with the dead. At the same time, she met Zach Slade, a private detective with a rough past, and just like Clare, he’s not yet ready to accept her gift—or his own.

But Clare has another matter to look into. A multimillionaire needs her help after relocating an old ghost town to his mountain estate. The bones of a murdered prospector are making nightly appearances in his guests’ beds. When the gold miner’s ghost contacts Clare, she promises to help find the name of his killer—but someone doesn't want the past revealed and might find her first…

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
07/28/2014
The middling second volume of the Ghost Seer series (after Ghost Seer) limps as noticeably as its protagonist, Montana lawman turned Denver PI Zach Slade. He and novice medium Clare Cermak made it through their first case together with their sanity and budding romance intact, but unlike her characters, Owens does not appear ready to move on. Although she avoids an out and out summary of the first book, every bit of character backstory is wearyingly reiterated—the explanation of Zach’s lame leg is proffered twice in the first three paragraphs. Appearing between the rehashes are a reasonably entertaining story about a ghostly prospector, J. Dawson Hidgepath, whose bones appear in ladies’ beds; a truculent not-quite-billionaire who hires Clare to stop these incursions; and an unknown someone who would prefer that Clare exit the picture. The characters remain appealing, but the plot never establishes enough self-contained momentum to make a page-turner. Agent: Deirdre Knight, Knight Agency. (Sept.)

Ghost Layer by Robin D. Owens is the 2nd book in her Ghost Seer

Ghost Layer by Robin D. Owens is the 2nd book in her Ghost Seer series. If you have not read my review of Ghost Seer, I will give you a brief description of this series. Clare Cermak is our heroine, and she is a straitlaced accountant, until her aunt dies and she inherits her estate, as well as the ability the see ghosts. Seeing ghosts is something Clare has trouble accepting until she knows if she doesn’t open up to this, she will go mad and die. She meets our hero Zach Slade, a former cop, who had to leave the force due to a crippling injury to his leg. Zach finds himself helping Clare solve the mystery, as well as helping her come to terms with her ability.

Ghost Layer finds Clare learning a bit more about her ability, but still not totally comfortable with her new life. As Enzo, the ghost dog who is her sidekick, tells her, she is helping those ghosts stuck in limbo to move on. Though Clare only sees ghosts from a period in the 1800’s and usually in the western towns, this is a modern day story taking place in Colorado.

Zach and Clare have become closer, and work very well together in this new mystery. Clare is hired by the detective agency that Zach works for to help a millionaire rid himself of a ghost leaving bones on his guests’ beds. When Clare meets the ghost, J Dawson Hidgepath, she finds out he was murdered, which is why he is still in limbo.

What follows is an engaging mystery to find the truth behind what actually happened so many years before. Zach, who also has some gifts, which he refuses to still acknowledge, is the one who will use his expertise to put the pieces to this puzzle together. Clare is able to find more information to give Zach, with the help of the ghost and of course, our adorable Enzo.

However, while she is staying at the millionaire’s mansion, Clare finds herself in danger from an unknown source who is out to stop her from finding the truth. This is a fun mystery laden story, with some great new additional characters, as well as enjoying the romance between Zach & Clare. The ghost was a ladies man, which gave us some humor throughout. Desiree was a wonderful character that I enjoyed very much, and hope she continues to be part of this series. What can I say about Enzo? So delightful and very funny….especially when he continually leaps through people out of nowhere, and is constantly shouting to Clare how much he loves her & Zach. Fun and cute, but he also helps & advises Clare (he was her aunts real dog).

This was a fun, exciting story with a bit of everything; romance, mystery, humor, suspense. In the future books, I look forward to seeing Clare accept her gift fully, and become a strong and tough ghost seer. I always enjoy anything by Robin Owens, and I recommend you to read this series. It is best to start with the first book, Ghost Seer to understand better.

Typically I find the professional reviews helpful but I think the Publisher's Weekly review (posted on this web page at the time of this writing) to be way off base. The professional reviewer thought there was too much repetition of back story from the first novel and that the plot never "took off." I beg to differ. Robin Owens is one of the best romance authors out there precisely because of her plots. Let's face it, the romance genre strongly prioritizes inner conflict and growth over story conflict and growth. Or, to be more blunt, emotion over action (Unless it's between the sheets action, which this story has plenty of!). I felt the plot in this book was quite strong. Maybe the reviewer got tripped up by the fact that the story requires the main character to solve a murder but the primary tone of the book is not a mystery genre tone, but rather an urban fantasy tone of a character coming to terms with a very unwanted paranormal gift. I found this book to have a lot of depth to it and a real pleasure to read. Can't wait for the next one!

    A fun shivery paranormal mystery.

Ghost Layer by Robin D. Owens is the sequel to the imaginative Ghost Seer and continues the adventures of Clare Cermak, who is still coming to terms with the inheritance from her late aunt, both materially and psychically. She is also adjusting to having Zach Slade in her life, while he struggles to deal with both her power and his own admitted as well as unacknowledged issues. They are both hired by Rickman Security and Investigations to deal with the ghost of J. Dawson Hidgepath, who is plaguing multimillionaire Dennis Laurentine, but the assignment turns out to be more dangerous than anticipated and Clare will need the support and assistance of both Zach and her guide, the phantom dog Enzo with his intermittent ‘Other’ knowledge, if she is going to survive to grow into her psychic gift.

This entertaining paranormal tale combines an intriguing mystery that gives new meaning to the term ‘cold case’ with a spine-chilling twist of having a ghost provide many of the pertinent clues. The effervescent ghost labrador, Enzo, does his best to facilitate Clare’s progress in assisting needy ghosts but he also has rules he is circumscribed by which affect his interactions, so it is fun to watch him be a dog, a liaison for the ghosts requiring help, and a conduit for the ‘Other’ who has a definite agenda for Clare. The connection that has formed between Clare and Zach has its ups and downs, which adds to the realism of a developing relationship. There are both fascinating revelations about what Clare and Enzo are able to do as well as an interesting change in Zach’s attitude about his shortcomings and abilities. What a creative series that gives a different twist on the concept of ghosts and haunting, especially for a self-admitted chicken such as myself who isn’t terribly fond of scary ghosts. These tales combine humor, paranormal elements, and romance in a winning combination. I look forward to many more stories from this version of the world, especially as both Clare and Zach become comfortable in their respective roles and with one another, not to mention the warm fuzzy feeling that a dog can supply...even if he is incorporeal!

Ghost Layer by Robin D. Owens

Ghost Layer is the second book in Robin D. Owens', Ghost Seer series. Readers who are looking for a book that has paranormal, romance and a good mystery will love this series. Both the hero and the heroine have psychic gifts, but they aren't the average couple, nor are their abilities. What I liked: I love the premise for this series! Owens has done such a great job of coming up with something that original in a very saturated genre. The paranormal explosion in the literary world has given us everything from vampires to demons, but one of the original paranormal characters was the ghost. I love that Owens has brought that back. Psychic abilities are also making a comeback in books and Owens is using the combination of both to bring this series alive. Added to that you have a great mystery with each book that generally has a historical angle and some romance. The Ghost Seer books have a lot to offer paranormal purists and those readers who are looking for something besides the typical vampire book. Zach is a great male lead! Readers will enjoy Zach's moral compass and his protective and loyal attitude. He is the epitome of an Old West law man who just happened to have been born in this century. He gives off a commanding presence and doesn't seem to be afraid of much, other than his own psychic gift. I loved the old crow rhyme taught to him by his grandmother and how that plays into his premonitions. There is so much potential with this character. I think Owens has created one of those lawmen that readers won't soon forget! Clare has her own troubles, as she figures out how to not only accept her gift, but to use it. I found her struggle captivating and understandable. I think readers sometimes want to rush the development with a character like this. They want the author to make her accept and move on, but I don't think that's how it would realistically happen if this were a real person and when I read I wanted these people to be real to me. So I am happy that Clare is taking her time to become who she wants to be. This wasn't something she wanted and that takes a lot more time to absorb. The romance between Clare and Zach is still pretty hot and heavy, but they are learning to be a part of each others lives and how they fit together a lot better in this one. The Old West ghosts of course Enzo the ghost dog are always my favorite part of this series. I love the way that each ghost has a problem that is keeping them from moving on. Each one adds a new historical element to the story that is so interesting. In this one Clare is trying to help a ghost who has been murdered and the closer she gets to resolution the more danger her life is in. I loved how she and Zach worked together and Enzo keeps things lively. Such a great idea for a series! I like the slant where Clare only deals with ghosts from a certain time period as well. That gives the series a more solid theme overall. Bottom Line: This is an excellent series and I look forward to each new book. Owens has created not only a great heroine, but the hero is top notch as well. The Old West ghosts, as well as, the ghost dog really are the stars of the show with this one. Owens has taken a lot of different elements and added them together to make a series that readers will fall in love with. Mystery, romance, and a few ghosts... what more could a paranormal reader as for?

The second in the new Ghost Seer series by Robin D. Owens, Ghost

The second in the new Ghost Seer series by Robin D. Owens, Ghost Layer is an intriguing tale of Clare Cermak, a former CPA, struggling to accept her newfound, unsettling ability to interact with, and influence, ghosts who lived and died in Colorado in the 1800s. Level-headed, practical Clare must learn to accept her gift and help these ghosts move on to their destiny, or go mad. Zach Slade, a former cop wounded in the line of duty, is also struggling with his changed life and the loss of the career which defined his life and ideals, due to the wound he suffered. These two strong yet wounded souls found each other and in the first book, and the relationship is heated and real. In Ghost Layer, they form a personal and professional partnership when Clare is hired by Zach's detective agency to prevent a ghost from leaving his bones around a modern-day millionaire's estate and guest lodge (specifically, in their beds). Can you say, "ewww?!"

Aided by Clare's funny yet powerful ghostly side-kick dog, Enzo, Clare and Zach attempt to lay the bones (to rest) of Ladies' Man J Dawson Hidgepath. J Dawson was murdered and defamed during his lifetime, which is why he haunts the estate today. The story is multi-faceted, dealing with a modern-day danger, echoes of the past, humor and pain, while developing understanding and trust in their newfound abilities, and each other. The characters have depth, strength and weaknesses combined, and Clare is a realistic heroine whom I can actually like and admire. Zach is the wounded soldier with strength and decency which are attractive and compelling. Enzo is a magical, mystical clown who never fails to surprise when he manifests as "The Other." The continued personal growth of both Clare and Zach is multi-faceted and deeply real. An engaging read, touching, hilarious and just plain interesting. I look for ward to the third book in the series.
