Overview

From five-time RITA Award winner Jo Beverley comes an exciting new Regency romance in which a lady must risk all to win love.

The man she shouldn’t want. The woman he shouldn’t marry...

David Kerslake, smuggling master from The Dragon's Bride, is now Earl of Wyvern and must survive the ton as well as the Preventive Officers.

Lucy Potter, daughter of a wealthy merchant, is more interested in trade than in the men after her dowry. When forced to have a London season, she sets out to enjoy herself rather than to find a husband. But once she meets the notorious Earl of Wyvern, her resolve weakens, and when they kiss, it dissolves—even though her instincts warn he’s dangerous.

Wyvern has a dark secret, which means he must win a rich bride. Lucinda Potter seems ideal. Not for her beauty and her lively charm, but because at first meeting she seems unlikely to realize the truth.

As he comes to know her, however, as they spar and kiss, he realizes she’s too clever and honest by far. Marrying Lucy would mean living a lie with the woman he has come to love....

Blonde, blue-eyed, beautiful, and business-minded, Lucinda Potter is not the featherbrain she appears to be. She also has no plans to wed—except for love. Her wealthy merchant father's unexpected announcement that he plans to remarry and a chance to have a London Season coincide, so Lucy decides to have some fun. When fortune hunters soon begin to annoy her, though, Lucy convinces David Kerslake-Somerford, the infamous new Earl of Wyvern, to discourage them by pretending to court her (in return for a kiss a day), knowing he's not attracted to her at all. VERDICT A notorious nobleman who needs to marry for money, a merchant's daughter who's more clever than he thinks, and a handful of characters reprised from Beverley's beloved "Rogues" novels meet in a fast-paced, rugged, swashbuckling exploit with strong ties to The Dragon's Bride (2001); with all of Beverley's trademark sensuality, humor, and flair. Beverley (Seduction in Silk) lives in England.

Meet the Author

Jo Beverley

Jo Beverley is widely regarded as one of the most talented romance writers today. She is a New York Times bestseller, a five-time winner of Romance Writers of America’s cherished RITA Award, and one of only a handful of members of the RWA Hall of Fame. She has also twice received the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Her recent novels include Seduction in Silk, A Scandalous Countess, An Unlikely Countess, and The Secret Duke. She has two grown sons and lives with her husband in England.

Biography

Jo Beverley is one the few authors writing English-set historical romance who is English. She was born and raised in England, and has a degree in English history from Keele University in Staffordshire. She and her husband emigrated to Canada in 1975 where they raised their two children. In 2009, the couple returned to England.

Though Jo started to write as a young child, it was only in the '80s that she began to think that it was something ordinary people could do, and after a talk at a local library, she settled to seriously writing her first historical romance.

Now, she is the author of over thirty romance novels and many novellas, which have garnered several RITAs from the Romance Writers of America, as well as several awards from Romantic Times, including two Career Achievement awards. She is a member of the RWA Honor Roll, and the RWA Hall of Fame.

Good To Know

Some fascinating outtakes from our interview with Jo Beverley:

"I'm English, born, raised, and educated, which has to contribute to the way I write my books."

"My profession -- once upon a time in another world -- was careers guidance, which involved visiting many different workplaces and learning about the jobs done there. This is a great education in the variety and complexity of life."

"I taught women-centered childbirth classes for 5 years, and that comes out in any childbirth scenes in my books.

"I'm a craft-dabbler, and I've tried most of them, including Tenerife lace, tatting, leatherwork, and stained glass, but I've never stuck with any. However, I once was a very good painter and I've recently decluttered all my craft materials to concentrate on drawing and painting as my artistic therapy for a demented author."

"I grew up in Morecambe, Lancashire, which is a 19th-century seaside town, but that's very close to Heysham, an ancient coastal village. They say the pre-Conquest church there is the oldest one in England still in use and there are stone-age tombs as well. We used to play on an Anglo-Saxon hogs-back stone near the church. I'm sure this easy contact with such ancient things tuned my mind to the past. I set my second book, The Stanforth Secrets, in Heysham, and it will be reissued in 2010." "My indulgences are really good cheese, bread, wine, coffee, and dark, dark chocolate (90% Lindt."

    A Shocking Delight
    By Jo Beverly
This book is number 15 in her series “The Company of Rogues”.
This is a rollicking tale of London in Season and smuggling on the coast of Devonshire in the early 1800’s. It gives you a peak into the lives of the ton, those who wished to be a part of the ton, and those who serve both groups. You meet David Kerslake-Somerford, the Earl of Wyvern and his sister Susan, Lady Amleigh from this group. It also gives you a view of the lives of the people who made up the middle class – the business people of London. Lucy Potter and her father Daniel Potter fall into this group. You catch a look into the lives of those whose livelihoods revolved around smuggling and their neighboring villagers. Here you meet the inhabitants of Dragon’s Cove and Church Wyvern.
David Kerlake-Somerford finds himself in need of a wife with a sizeable dowry. Lucy finds herself in need of a way out of her home as her father prepares to remarry after the death of her mother. David and Lucy find themselves attracted to each other but mixing like oil and water. David finds that he is being discouraged from seeking Lucy’s hand for reasons that she doesn’t understand.
What all must come to pass for true love to be allowed to flourish?
Other than a few scenes that might prove too graphic for younger readers, I highly recommend this story for the romance and high adventure.

I received this book free of charge through Goodreads for my unbiased review.

So loved this book. I have read and loved all of Jo Beverly's books. I am especially fond of the Rogues series. Loved David's character in Dragon's Bride and now in his own story. Three parts of a man that came together to make a great hero. Lucy was smart and capable of working things out. She knew what she wanted and she went after it. I loved the part she played getting away from her father. Her acceptance of the life David led was a favorite part of the story. I also loved the fact that some of the Rogues were back.

Award winning author, Jo Beverley continues her long running Com

Award winning author, Jo Beverley continues her long running Company of Rogues series, with the 15th installment, A Shocking Delight. Beverley has long thrilled historical romance fans with her blend of opulent Regency grandeur and sweet and tender romance. Her latest offering is a tale of opposites. At first glance Lucinda Potter and David Kerslake have little in common, but underneath there is a lot more to this relationship than meets the unknowing eye. Filled with action, adventure, and a delightful romance, this is a book any Regency fan will adore.

    What I liked:

Lucinda Potter is in a bit of a jam. Her father has always schooled her in the way of business and mercantilism. But the death of her mother has completely derailed Lucy's plans to take over her father's business. Now he intends to remarry and have a son to continue his legacy. And where does that decision leave Lucy? Her father is determined she marry and start her own family, when all she wants is continue in the financial world of the ton. What a great heroine! Lucy is tenacious and head strong. She's used to getting her own way and now she is at a loss. When she meets David she knows something is different about him, but she can't quite put her finger on it. Beverley once again creates a heroine that interesting and full of the zest of life. Lucy is fun to read about and her success in life is something readers will be clamoring for.

David Kerslake is a study in contrasts. He is a man of whom a lot is expected from others, when he only wants to live a quiet life. He has an earldom that he doesn't want and doesn't know what to do with. He is the leader of a group of smugglers that he doesn't want to captain and he now has to find a woman with money which he really doesn't want either. That is until he meets Lucy and things begin to become a lot more clear. I think Beverley knew that Lucy needed a man who could challenge her and David is certainly that man. He loves her intelligence and fortitude, even though her opinions are vitally different from his own. A great overall hero and the perfect compliment to the heroine.

Together these two characters provide readers with a look into true honesty and how it affects any relationship. I think Beverley wanted the reader to think these were two very different characters who would have to overcome a lot to be together and that's true. But there are also a lot of similarities as well. I think readers will find that they have more in common that what is first apparent. I loved the way their relationship flourished and grew. It started out slow and then worked up to a beautiful romance. I thought the pacing was perfect and the kiss a day bargain was genius. I loved this one.

    What I didn't like:

There were times when I felt a little behind the times with this book, having not read any of the previous titles in this particular series. I especially think I would have benefited from reading, The Dragon's Bride in which David is first introduced. I think readers would enjoy this title more with a little more background and perhaps reading a few of the other books as well.

    Bottom Line:

Beverley shows why she is such a well known and excellently regarded novelist. The plot was not just a rehash of a typical Regency theme. It stood well on it's own, though I think readers may find themselves more attuned to the story by reading previous books in the series. An overall good read, with excellent characters and storyline.

A SHOCKING DELIGHT by Jo Beverley is an exciting Regency Histori

A SHOCKING DELIGHT by Jo Beverley is an exciting Regency Historical Romance set in 1817 London. #15 in "Company of Rogues" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Visit the author's website for a list of titles. I have not read the whole series, and had no trouble keeping up with the storyline.

Meet Lucy Potter, a wealthy merchant's daughter and David Kerslake-Somerford, is the reluctant 7th Earl of Wyvern, aka Captain Drake.

Lucy is complex, intelligent, charming, a bit shy, rich and she has her own ideas of trade. David, is charming to say the least, a notorious rake, had his title thrust upon him by unforeseen events, which you learn in The Dragon's Bride.

*A SHOCKING DELIGHT follows the 2001 novel, The Dragon's Bride, the sixth book in the series.*

Lucy leaves her family estate when she learns her father is to re-marry, after, her mother's death of only a year ago. She is forced to endure a London season. Captain Drake, is looking for ,yes, a rich, bride....enter Lucy.

Filled with passion, romance, a bit of mystery, secrets, and a grand adventure to happiness. Can opposites attract? A SHOCKING DELIGHT proves they just might after all. What a deliciously delightful tale of how opposites attract, proving love crosses boundaries of class, society, and ideas. A delight to read and one I would recommend to Romance readers everywhere. Well done! Received for an honest review.
