A LOVE TO CALL HER OWN

It's been two years since Jessy Lawrence lost her husband in Afghanistan, and she's never fully recovered. Drowning her sorrows didn't help, and neither did the job she'd hoped would give her a sense of purpose. Now trying to rebuild her life, she finds solace in her best friends, fellow military wives who understand what it's like to love-and lose-a man in uniform . . . and the memory of one stolen night that makes her dream of a second chance at love.

Dalton Smith has known more than his fair share of grief. Since his wife's death, he revels in the solitude of his cattle ranch. But try as he might, he can't stop thinking about the stunning redhead and the reckless, passionate night they shared. He wasn't ready before, but Dalton sees now that Jessy is the only woman who can mend his broken heart. So how will he convince her to take a chance on him?

Publishers Weekly

Pappano’s background as a military wife lends considerable authenticity in her deeply satisfying third visit to Tallgrass, Okla. (after A Man to Hold on To). Jessy Lawrence, whose husband was killed in Afghanistan, has hit rock bottom. A flirtatious encounter leads her to a one-night stand with rancher Dalton Smith, whose wife took her own life after being injured on an Afghan battlefield. Jessy and Dalton try to deny their chemistry at first—Jessy because she doesn’t feel she deserves love, Dalton because he refuses to be vulnerable again—but they slowly realize that they may have a future together. Pappano’s characters are achingly real and flawed, and readers will commiserate with and root for the couple. While many authors of military-themed romance focus on action in the field or the sexiness of the uniform, Pappano is bold enough to dig into far more painful territory: what happens after the casualty calls. This deeply moving tale will remind everyone who reads it of the great sacrifices made by those who serve and the families they leave behind. (Sept.)
RT Book Reviews on A Man to Hold on To
"4 1/2 stars! Through her beautiful storytelling, Pappano deftly expresses the emotions that come with love and loss. The genuine love that grows between Therese and Keegan melts the heart. Pappano's latest packs a powerful punch."

A Love To Call Her Own is the third book in the Tallgrass series written by author Marilyn Pappano. In A Love To Call Her Own, we meet Jessy Lawrence, a widow. Her husband died in Afghanistan. Jessy feels guilty because she was contemplating asking her husband for a divorce. She is a member of the Margarita Club, which is made up of a group of military wives that have all been widowed. We also meet Dalton Smith. Dalton’s wife committed suicide after being injured while she was deployed. Jessy and Dalton had one passionate night together. Although he tries to avoid her, he can’t get Jessy off his mind. Can Jessy and Dalton help each other overcome their heartache?

The setting for A Love To Call Her Own is Tallgrass, Oklahoma. The Tallgrass series focuses on the women in the Margarita Club. Marilyn Pappano’s writing conveys great emotion. Jessy had little self-confidence because she felt rejected by her family. Dalton has not been able to let go of his anger or grief because of his wife’s suicide. Jessy turns to alcohol and one night stands while Dalton turns to solitude to cope with their loss. There are plenty of secondary plots and characters that are interesting and help to keep the plot moving along and at a nice pace. I enjoyed listening to A Love To Call Her Own. It was read by Loretta Rawlins. Her voice added the perfect nuance to this tale. I look forward to more books in this series.

This series just keeps getting better.  Jessy lost her husband in Afghanistan and feels guilt because she was going to as for divorce when he got home.  Dalton lost his wife also in Afghanistan.  But he knows that she untied the tourniquet and bleed out instead of coming home with legs.  Both are in a dark place until they find each other.

Their journey is a great one and one I loved being on.  Can't wait for the next installment in this series.  Hope it never ends.
