Publishers Weekly

The magic of Ryan's best work is missing from this perfunctory effort, which kicks off the Montana-set Copper Creek Cowboys series. The contemporary reunion romance between Ash MacKenzie and Brenna Crane offers little that is new. Ash, the first son of a legendary rancher, leaves behind his sweetheart, Brenna, to strike out on his own. He returns home a decade later following the murder of his father and learns that his onetime love is engaged to an ambitious government official. The murder is not the focus of the suspense subplot; by the story's midpoint it becomes clear that sweet, kind, and loving Brenna is in grave danger. Though the MacKenzie family dynamic is a strong point and Ash and Brenna share a nice chemistry, Ryan (aka Ruth Langan) does a poor job of foreshadowing true colors of Brenna's fiancé and an even worse one maintaining the secrecy of the villain's identity. I've read another RC Ryan book and enjoyed it and this one was definitely the same. The beginning of the book, we see Ash interacting with his father, and it wasn't good at all. Quite honestly, I thought Ash's dad was a gigantic jerk. I don't blame for Ash leaving for a decade.

Fast forward to present day. Ash is back in Copper Creek because his father was murdered. Throughout the story, we are shown that his father wasn't always a hardass. He's starting to realize this, with the help of Brenna. From the point they see each other again, it's blatant that the connection they had previously is still there and the pull is hard to deny. Once Brenna realizes the jerk she was with was not who she wanted to be, the story really started to take off. Bad things start happening to the couple whenever they are together, which makes everyone think that Ash's father's killer is out to get Ash. Things go from weird coincidences to craziness which had me breezing through the story as fast as I could.

Between the mysteries, twists, and the love story, this book had me glued to the pages. And I loved the secondary characters and after reading the little snippet from the next book, I cannot wait to get my hands on it. The Copper Creek Cowboys is going to be a very enjoyable series.

Ash McKenzie broke hearts when left Copper Creek and he knows that just as soon as he uncovers the truth about his father’s death, he’ll be leaving town again. That is until he runs into Brenna Crane and realizes that a stampede couldn’t make him break her heart again… now he’ll just have to convince her of that in this captivating contemporary western romance.

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers shivering in anticipation with suspense and romance. The author brings the story to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination, while the well orchestrated suspense and action adds excitement and drama. The characters are strong, compelling and invite the reader to visit Copper Creek and get to know them.

Brenna tried to move on with her life but the truth is she never stopped hoping that Ash would take her away from her troubled past and now that he’s back she knows better than to trust him but the attraction stills burns hot. The reader can’t help but get caught up in their story as Ash and Brenna tries to work out their relationship as well as find Ash’s father’s killer.

Escalating danger builds anticipation and excitement throughout the story as the it seems someone has it out for Brenna and I must say that was a bit of a surprising and exciting situation. The story has some side plots that adds depth and spice to the story and the captivating characters ensure that the reader want to know all their stories as well.  I was completely caught up in the story from the beginning and I am looking forward to reading Whit’s and Griff’s story… hmmm… I can’t make up my mind which brother I like best.
