    An absolutely perfect beginning

    I almost finished this entire book during a five hour flight, and I swear that if the plane had gone down, I would have been reading when we hit the Pacific. I haven't been this hooked on a story in ages--so many disparate threads in the beginning that end up woven together into a perfect tapestry. I'm a huge fan of Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood and I'm already hooked just as seriously on this new series. This is not a book to rush through--there are so many twists and turns that you really have to pay attention to every single thing--but I am anxiously awaiting her next book in the series so that I can see what Jim Heron, one terrific fallen angel, gets into next. My hat's off to Ward--as an author myself, I know how hard it is to come up with a totally fresh series. To set one in the same town of Caldwell as her BDB series with reference to some of those characters, and yet create something so unique and so perfectly written is an amazing achievement. I'm definitely recommending this book to my readers.

    Not what I expected...in a good way.

    After reading other reader reviews, I was very hesitant about starting this new series. But I loved the BDB, so I decided to go ahead and give it a try. To be honest, I don't really understand all of the negative reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Admittedly, it is far different than the BDB. Although it does retain Ward's decidedly alpha male character type, the story is more about Heron's entry into the spiritual realm and his place in the battle between good and evil and the salvation of diPietro's soul. The romance subplot is just that...a subplot - perhaps that is why some hard-core romance fans might have a difficult time with the book. This is not a love conquers all story, as the BDB books seem to be. It is more about the consequences of choices and the precarious position of the soul. Don't get me wrong, the romance is there, it just isn't the book's main theme.

    I also wanted to say that while the story does involve such religious subjects as angels, god, heaven(?), and the soul, it is not overly religious in nature. Nor is it overly serious. Despite would-be heavy topics, the read is light and fun with a little suspense, per Ward's usual style.

    I look forward to seeing where Ward continues to take this series and these characters.

    Enjoyed the book immensely.I found the world of Caldwell interesting and the lives of Jim and Vin kept me engaged. I also liked the subtle references to the Brothers and could see how their stories could coexist in one setting.

    Not a Brotherhood book by far!

    JR Ward's writing usually has me captivated and I devour all her work like it's brain candy. Covet did not hold that same feeling. I normally finish her books within a day, but this book took me a week. I felt as if I were waiting for something good to happen and it never did. It's as if the The Black dagger Brotherhood and Covet were written by two totally different writers. There was far too many little details and not enough substance. I don't believe I will continue this series. It's a shame, because I love every thing else Ward has written. This just wasn't up to her usually standard.

    terrific fantasy

    Before he died Jim Heron never thought much of the afterlife as a special unit soldier who could be killed on a dangerous deployment at any moment. However he never expected his demise would be at a construction site. Nor was he prepared for his new assignment as a front line operative in the "war" between angels and demons; which seem to echo his old work for the military. His afterlife job is to save seven souls; each with a different one of the deadly sins sinking the person. The magnificent seven represent mankind so Jim understands the consequence if he fails to win this weird wager as the stake is humanity.

    The first soul on the line is avaricious business mogul Vin Di Pietro, whose future fiancée Marie-Terese Boudreau sold her soul to evil to save her son. All Jim has to do is save the soul of Vin while finding an escape clause for Marie-Terese without harming her offspring. A simple scenario for his handler to outline, but Jim knows how easy a plan collapses when dealing with humans only; throw in angels, demons, and who knows what else they hid from him and all he wants to do is ride away on his bike.

    Moving from the exhilarating Black Daggerhood urban fantasy saga, JR Ward starts her new series The Fall Angels with a great opening act. Readers obtain enough of a taste of Ward world to understand how complex yet simplified it is. Jim is a fascinating champion who knows vengeance may be the lord's domain, but he understands that; saving souls is out side his job description. With a strong cast of lost soul humans, angels, and demons fans will enjoy the exciting COVET and look forward to six more deadly sins.

    Won't Read Any More of this series

    I managed to finish the book, but it was not up to the standards of Ms Wards fabulous Brotherhood books. I won't read any more of this series. She's wasting her time writing these when there are so many more brotherhood stories I would rather read. THEY are in my permanent library, and I have re-read some of them.

    Not her best work

    I am a huge fan of JR Ward, but this story was just not her best. I had to force my way through until the end. There was very little chemistry between the main 2 charachters. Usually, JR writes the kind of chemistry that jumps off the page and has you hooked from the start, but it just wasn't there with these two. Also, the story of Jim the angel really bored me. That being said - don't waste your time with this one. JR needs to stick with the brothers....

    Not What I Expected......

    If you're thinking of picking up this book with expectations of Covet being in the same genre of the BDB series, I strongly advise against it. This series is not a dark urban fantasy romance like the BDB series. This book falls into the paranormal romance genre; which I don't particularly fancy. The story seemed very predictable and lacked the dark and gritty quality that the BDB series has. So all that being said, Judging Covet for what it is and not comparing it to BDB series; Covet felt like any other bad paranormal romance. The plot was paper thin and obvious with more "couple relationship" development and way less in-depth plot development; too many conveniently coincidental events, by the end of the book I couldn't careless about the characters, I just wanted the book to end; also there was barely any paranormal or fantasy involved. To be honest, this entire series seems pointless and hopeless. I don't see any potential for greatness in this series or even any particular point for JR to even continue writing this series, it seems like a wash.

    I must be a glutton for punishment because despite all the negatives in my review, I will give JR Ward's Fallen Angels series another chance and check-out the next book in this series Crave due out Fall 2010. The only reason why I read this book to the end and I'm willing to give JR Ward another chance with this series is only out of respect for her BDB series, which I love. JR Ward has proven from her BDB series, that she has the talent to weave together an intricate world with depth, excitement and danger; and she has always had the ability to capture my attention and keep it. Not every author can put out a best seller every time and clearly this book is one of those times for JR Ward. This Fallen Angels series has been permanently kicked off my "buy" list and entered my "library checkout" column. I recommend this series to paranormal romance fans only or to those brave dark urban fantasy readers with an infinite amount of patience (which I evidently lacked) to sift through the sea of romance and emotion.

    Interesting new take on paranormal plots

    Covet: A Novel of the Fallen Angels is the first book in a new paranormal romance series by J.R. Ward. The book does not encompass vampires but instead that of angels and demons who are both fighting to win the world against good and evil, respectively. Both the angels and the demons need to agree on the identity a player, or champion, for their cause. This champion must be acceptable to both sides, therefore needs to have an equal capacity to do good and bad, and it will be up to this one person to influence the fate of seven souls. The winning side of the game will be the one with the most number of souls. Since there are to be seven souls in play there is no chance of a draw or tie-breaker. If the angels win the Earth will be "nothing but one giant frickin' Christmas morning." If the demons win, they get to keep all the souls on Earth and the angels will be slaves for all eternity.
    Jim Heron is a building contractor and an ex-military assassin. He has been chosen as the champion of both the angels and the demons.
    Jim's first job is to save the soul of Vin diPietro. With very little information to go on and not a clue about how to do it, he starts by getting himself invited to dinner at Vin's home in the hopes that some soul-saving idea might present itself to him. Vin DiPietro is a cold, hard-hearted business man with plenty of money but a distinct lack of love, or even joy, in his life. That all changes for him when he meets a vulnerable woman, Marie-Terese, who brings emotion back into his life. But with a demon bent on collecting his soul the path to true love for Vin and Marie-Terese is fraught with danger.
    I like the new spin J.R. Ward has thrown into the mix and look forward to the next book in the series. If your looking for a break from the normal shape-shifter and vampire genre then this is definitely a book you will want to read. It had a lot of action and romance in it and the characters interactions will make you laugh out loud at times.

    Let me Clarify . . .

    I love J.R. Ward and I love her writing style. She has a canny way of helping us delve into the male psyche while still carrying and expanding a complicated story line. I thought this book was absolutely wonderful and it being the first book in a series was even more impressive.
    I am disappointed by many of the reviews I've read and I feel like Ward has not been given credit where credit is due. I loved how complicated the story line became and how Jim, Vin and Marie all became intertwined. I also enjoyed the many plot twists and the many character additions. I never felt lost or confused nor was I disinterested at any point. You really had to be paying attention to keep up with all the different characters and I totally did not see the ending coming. It was a complete twist and very refreshing. I wondered how she would carry us from book to book and I loved how she incorporated Jim and his buddies into the ending. I also liked that while Jim's mission is to save other people it is ultimately about saving himself. Being able to emotionally intertwine your characters together morally while still maintaining a strong story line is quite a feat. Most authors would get too preachy and bogged down in all the Heaven vs Hell stuff. She created her own story, her own rules and put it all together in her own style and it was brilliant. I'm no professional but I am an avid reader and I read many different genera. I can honestly say that if you thought this was difficult to read or the story line was too confusing then you should go take a gander at Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time Series". He has over 10 main characters and his storyline is so complex that if you miss one page you could be lost for many many chapters, even the whole book. I have to literally stop reading sometimes because my head is throbbing from so much information and story movement. Go check out his book reviews on B&N and I bet you wont find one bad review, he is genius. J.R. Ward does a brilliant job here and I hope as fans of her series you take the time to reflect on your poor comprehension skills and give the book another go. J.R. Ward deserves it.

    Not black dagger but well worth it better in many ways

    It is NOT the BDB but more than worth the read. I am typically not a romance reader and got into the erotica genre because of the Beauty Trilogy and Fifty Shades. This first book was absolutely captivating. If youre looking for an easy 'fluff' read this is a little more intense and story/character driven but has all the positives from Black Dagger Brotherhood and many of the same underlying male characteristics that made BDB so hot. I almost made the mistake of letting the negative reviews turn me off of this series but obviously those posers...im sorry,posters, dont have the brainpower requisite for even a rudimentary understanding of this series...they are looking for porn....i.e. all sex/no story. They should stick to films. For any actual book lovers out there this is everything you want....great writing. Great story. Great characters, and even better for all of us ereaders great editing. Period. Dont let the negs fool you! Great book and I thought Black Dagger was absolutely fantastic....very original and this is just the next level. Definitely not a waste of money in a time when we could all use a giant 'pick me up'!

    Don't love it.....

    I guess it would have been better if I hadn't read the Black Dagger Brotherhood books first. Kind of disappointed since her writing is so strong in the other series, this book was a mess. I think the most excited I got was the short appearances of Phury, Trez and mention of Rhev. The love "scenes" aren't even that good, really lacking compared to BDB.

    JR Ward Fan, but...

    I wasn't expecting the Black Dagger Brotherhood but I was expecting something a little better than what I read. I'm a HUGE fan of Ward but this book had way too many characters and too much going on...it wasn't worth trying to keep up. The story was more about the angel "Jim" than a romance between the couple. Ward jumped around so much in her writing that the couple truly was shorted read time. Truly several in our book club would get down on one need to Ward and beg her to drop these books and devote all her time to BDB, or if she did continue, please make it more about the couple and allow the angels to do their 'deeds' in the background. You really can't read this and expect a 'romance' because there isn't enough in there to qualify.

    slow to start,but well worth it!!

    very slow to start and a little confusing,but soon everything starts to mesh together and when it does it just gets better,this is not bdb but you get small glimpes of these characters coming into there own,trust me this series is only going to get better and i for one will be waiting to get my next copy in the series. it was well worth the money and a very good read.

    No Black Dagger Brotherhood!

    A little confusing at first, but the book gains speeds and then falls flat. None of the characters are very memorable and the story is dragged on. I absolutely love the BD books so this was a disappointment. Maybe the next one will be better because anyone who has read the BD knows how amazing JR Ward can write. Definitely did not live up to my expectations. Best part was the 3 page preview of John Matthew's story -Lover Mine.

    A huge disappointment

    Words alone cannot express how very, very disappointed I am with this book. I really like Ward and had high hopes for this book. It's the first in a series and to be honest, I was hoping for another Black Dagger Brotherhood. No such luck. I just don't care about Jim or Vin or Marie-Terese or Devina. I kept reading long after I would have stopped with another author because of Ward's track record, but finally gave up around the 28th chapter. Thought I would push through and finish it, but simply can't read another word.

    My problems were mainly with the characters and the plot, as the writing itself wasn't bad. Don't get me wrong, as I think that Ward is a talented writer, but this series just isn't for me. I didn't care about Jim, who comes back from the dead with a mission to save souls. Didn't care about either Vin, who is his first mission, or the two women in Vin's life. And the plot didn't move fast enough for me either. To put it simply, I was bored.

    All in all, I was very disappointed with this book. Looking forward to the next one in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, but won't be reading any future books in the Fallen Angels saga. Think this is only the second book I haven't been able to finish since I've started blogging, so hoping my next book will be better!

    Normally I love this author.

    I was not able to "get into this novel." My favorite character was the dog, Dog. The idea is great, but I did not feel any connection to the characters, as it kept jumping around too much. I felt no empathy towards any of the characters. Hopefully, the second one will be better.

    Yuck

    I like the BDB series, but I got 8 chapter into this book and couldn't go any further. I plan on taking this to the used book store soon.

    Hmm....

    Naturally, the day this book came out I ran to my barnes and noble and devoured the entire thing by the next day. Unfortunately, I'm left with a sad review of this novel. There was SO much climactic story, and like 6 different story lines going on at once, but as I slowly inched my way towards the last fourth of the novel, I got upset at the prospect of everything being summed up quickly and unsatisfactory. And that's what happened. I dislike what happened to Jim, and his ending. Also, I dislike the way Marie-Terese's story was concluded. I dislike that Devina didn't go away, although I know it's to continue the story line for further books. Vin was a fantastic character though, absolutely delicious. But above all, I hate that Jim(based off how the book ended) won't be able to interact with Vin and Marie-Terese anymore.

    I was, however, absolutely delighted to see a insert from the new BDB novel at the end. It lightened up my heavy heart after Covet ended. In conclusion, this novel will not be read and re-read multiple times like my other J.R. Ward novels, however I will continue with the series. I have total faith in J.R. Ward.
