ELVIS PRESLEY’S FIANCÉE AND LAST LOVE FINALLY TELLS HER STORY

“Elvis, you and I know the truth and unfortunately you’re not here to set the record straight. With this book, I will try to...”

Elvis Presley and Graceland were fixtures in the life of Ginger Alden, having been born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. But she had no idea that she would play a part in that enduring legacy—as Elvis Presley’s fiancée, and his last great love. For over three decades Ginger has held the truth of their relationship close to her heart. Now she shares her unique story, and while a lot has been written about the King, the Elvis we meet in this long-anticipated memoir is a revelation.

In her own words Ginger details their whirlwind romance—from first kiss to his stunning proposal of marriage. She details his exploration of Eastern religions, his perception of being a “legend,” his devotion to family and friends, and her attempt to know the insular group surrounding Elvis. And for the very first time she talks about the devastating end of it all, and the 50,000 mourners and reporters who descended on Graceland in 1977, exposing Ginger to the reality of living in the spotlight of a short, yet immortal, life.

Above it all, Alden rescues Elvis from the hearsay, rumors, and tabloid speculations of his final year by shedding a frank yet personal light on a very public legend. From a unique and intimate perspective, she reveals the man—complicated, romantic, fallible, and human—behind the enduring myth, a superstar worshipped by millions, and loved by Ginger Alden.

Kirkus Reviews
2014-07-14
The King's final fiancee breaks her long silence. Presley fans hoping for some scenes with sizzle will need to reread 50 Shades of Grey instead. Here, there are a few chaste kisses, and the first time the couple actually engaged in any sexual contact, Alden reaches into her well-used bag of clichés and emerges with, "I felt chills as he touched me. Was this it? Were we finally going to make love? I was aroused but anxious, barely able to breathe." The author's account is resolutely chronological, beginning with her father's encounters with Presley in the U.S. Army (encounters not involved in his daughter's later relationship) and moving forward to the King's demise on Aug. 16, 1977, when she found him toppled over on the bathroom floor—the author does not go into much detail regarding his death. A couple of decades younger that Presley, Alden was swooped into the Presleys' odd life at Graceland. Soon, he was showering her (and, eventually, her family, too) with gifts: jewels, cars, furs and some promises he didn't live to execute. (An unfulfilled promise to pay off her mother's mortgage was an issue that ended up in court.) Alden also writes about his weird and ugly sides, but always with (remembered) affection. He hit her once (apologized), discharged firearms at a TV and telephone (apologized), hurled a dish of ice cream at the wall when she mentioned calories (apologized), and pouted and waxed passive-aggressive when he didn't get exactly what he wanted. The author's many descriptions of Elvis' fascination with numerology and conspiracy theories make him appear—unintentionally, it's clear—as something of a dim bulb despite his bright talent. After the King's death, the others gradually elbowed Alden away, and he did not mention her in his will. A rosy aura glows throughout this misty memoir of love and loss.

very well written book, already one of my top favorite Elvis books. Ginger has written a very thoughtful, loving and insightful book that will please all the fans who have waited so long for the complete and truthful account of the last days of Elvis. Im glad to know that when he passed that he was surrounded by a real and loving family who cared about him as a man and not just a world famous rock star. If you want the truth then this is the book for you.

One of the best books I read in awhile

I just read this book and i have to say I love this book. Ginger was only 20 years old but they really loved each other. I think if he didn't pass away they would of gotten married. She did not know him long, but in that short time they were together all the time. She did a good job in writing this book after 37 years. I would reccommend this book.

    Boring account

As a Memphian I know who most everyone is mentioned in Miss Alden's book. I think she is a very nice person and was so very young when with Elvis. Maybe that is why it is so boring. I took away just a few events that seemed to be the backdrop of the story line. Men all sitting around smoking, drinking. She didn't even know there was a pool for months and hardly ever got in it. Her father knew Elvis from the Army and she never mentioned that to Elvis??? Strange! A girl of 18 can't tell E anything and no one could for that matter. Elvis was a poor country boy with limited tastes in about everything except women. He could have anything he wanted and yet he ate fried banana sandwiches. He hated change and made himself a prisoner. Ginger reports of them reading to each other over and over again. Sleeping and repeat.
I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know. I felt sorry for Ginger in many ways. They ran them through Graceland and he just pointed to the one he wanted. Nothing seemed exciting to me at all other than the fact she was with the most famous person on the planet. I guess that is good enough to read her book. If you notice in all her pictures with Elvis she is looking down and not smiling.

I have just started reading this book because I have been waiting so many years to hear Ginger's side of the story about Elvis' death (mostly as to what happened} . I have skipped a few pages out of boredom . I have questioned why Now also because she could have done so at the time we fans really need to hear her. She was like a silent partner (9 months doesn't make a relationship and she was extremely young and naïve). Does she need the money now? um. Just strange but yet being a complete Elvis fan for many many years I myself was curious but I can see by the way it is written that she is not going into pertinent detail enough. She sort of skims over her stories. I need the hard evidence. I need details . I do see where she speaks of herself more and also her family and just doesn't give us enough of what we all have been waiting for. Priscilla's book was extremely detailed and the many years she spent with Elvis, I would say she really knew the "Real Elvis". Sorry Ginger but I can see from the beginning of the book that I would be disappointed, but none the less I will read it and add it to my Elvis Book Collection. Thanks for the try, but you really should have came out years ago. You say you are trying to save his name and reputation, why not years ago when his ex employees were bashing him with the book that came out while he was still aware . Why then didn't you speak up? I can't give it a rating for the entire book, but I was so excited to read and when I did, I was hoping not to want to put it down, but it actually made me want to. I so far will say I give it a solid 3

    OK

As a life time fan of Elvis's my only question is why now??? The book was passable but won't reccommend!! So many of his Memphis mafia refute most of these claims----- so who do we believe????

I enjoyed reading about the true relationship between Elvis & Ginger, I applaud her for waiting until her son was old enough to understand the love between a man & a woman.  I thought she did an excellent job at describing her time with Elvis, It's about time that someone who truly loved him wrote a book showing that Elvis was just a man with an amazing talent. A true fan accepts that he was human with a good & bad side like all people.

    Good but not great

As a big Elvis fan I was expecting this book to be about Elvis. There is a lot about ginger and her family that I could have done without. It was very boring. The parts about Elvis were interesting and I would liked to read more about him.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm sure everyone has their option, and up till now the stories were captivating, but kinda on the hard side to believe. This just seems like it was more of what it was like.
No one can even venture to imagine the life Elvis lived, we just can't. But there is a cost of fame and fortune, unfortunately he paid it. Let’s all face it, everyone nowadays who wanting/trying to act like a star, wear sunglasses inside, give away stuff to people, etc, etc, etc is trying mimic the original very genuine, generous person, Elvis.
Still, and we all have our options, but to me this is one of the most accurate accounts as to what it was like.
Two thumbs up Ginger!! A must read for the truly serious loyal Elvis fan.

I was expecting more, new information. Almost everything in this book was already common knowledge. It's an okay read, but I honestly thought it would be much more interesting. Borrow it if you can, don't pay for it.
