NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Suzanne Brockmann’s seamless blend of heroic military action and intense passion inspired USA Today to call her “a superstar of romantic suspense”—and for years her award-winning Troubleshooters books have been must-reads for fans of sizzling stories of action and adventure. Now the New York Times bestselling author shoots to thrill again with Do or Die, an electrifying new novel that is certain to win Brockmann new readers and delight devotees.

Navy SEAL Ian Dunn went rogue in a big way when he turned his talents to a lawless life of jewel heists and con jobs. Or so the world has been led to believe. In reality, the former Special Ops warrior is still fighting for good, leading a small band of freelance covert operatives who take care of high-stakes business in highly unofficial ways. That makes Ian the hands-down choice when the U.S. government must breach a heavily guarded embassy and rescue a pair of children kidnapped by their own father, a sinister foreign national willing to turn his kids into casualties. Shockingly, Ian passes on the mission for reasons he will not—or cannot—reveal.

But saying no is not an option. Especially not for Phoebe Kruger, Ian’s beautiful and unexpectedly brash new attorney. Determined to see the abducted children set free, Phoebe not only gets Ian on board but insists on riding shotgun on his Mission: Impossible–style operation, whether he likes it or not.

Though Phoebe has a valuable knack for getting out of tight spots, there’s no denying the intensely intimate feelings growing between Ian and Phoebe as the team gears up for combat. But these are feelings they both must fight to control as they face an array of cold-blooded adversaries, including a vindictive mob boss who’s got Ian at the top of his hit list and a wealthy psychopath who loves murder as much as he loves money. As they dodge death squads and play lethal games of deception, Ian and Phoebe will do whatever it takes to save the innocent and vanquish the guilty—or die trying.

Praise for Do or Die

“This is action-adventure on steroids with an interwoven romance or two, maybe three or even four in full bloom or on the cusp of blossoming. From the start, I’m recommending that you keep an eye out for the next book in this Reluctant Heroes series. Here’s a vote for Martell Griffin’s story. [Suzanne] Brockmann writes with the imagination running free and on the wild side. What’s not to love about that? . . . Suspense remains high at octane levels, and the romance is served up with witty banter, ultrasexiness and very poignant moments.”USA Today

“Fans of Suzanne Brockmann’s military suspense novels need not worry. There’s a new cast of intriguing, smart and buff characters (both the men and the women), but the adrenaline-driven pace and crafty plotting are pure Brockmann. . . . As the team members dispersed, I looked forward to reading their tales, knowing that master storyteller Brockmann will deliver them as she did in the seventeen Troubleshooters books.”Tampa Bay Times

“Brockmann effortlessly and expertly tosses hundreds of details into the air and juggles them with brilliance. The first in her Reluctant Heroes series, the novel will captivate readers with its intense, action-filled plot, alpha-and-a-half hero, and his smart, perfect-for-him heroine, as well as secondary characters who contribute pathos and humor. Enthralling and breathtaking.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Bestseller Brockmann's Reluctant Heroes series opener delivers everything that romantic suspense fans will expect. The first case that lawyer Phoebe Kruger tries for her prestigious new firm isn't going the way she thought it would. Her client, Ian Dunn, doesn't want to leave jail, despite being offered his freedom in exchange for doing one small thing for the federal government. His reasons may have to do with a tangled mess of life-changing secrets involving international criminal sociopaths, mobsters, family, and friends. Phoebe and Ian must work on both sides of the law to save two kidnapped children before their time runs out, while ensuring that Ian's family is safe from the demons of his past. The lengthy story starts slowly but moves powerfully once it gets in gear, and the cast of sensitive alpha men and strong, imperfect women is well developed. Interpersonal tension gets far more focus than action, creating a refreshingly light feel. Agent: Steve Axelrod, Axelrod Agency. (Feb.)

Attorney Phoebe Kruger is tasked with negotiating client Ian Dunn's prison release, against his will, so he can rescue two kidnapped children, not realizing that doing so will set events in motion that will threaten dozens of lives--and a few hearts. Considering his reputation as a former Navy SEAL and a suspected international jewel thief, Phoebe finds it a little odd that Ian is in jail for getting drunk and losing control of his car. But when an accident incapacitates Ian's usual attorney, Phoebe is sent in his place. As a recent hire at the respected firm that represents Ian, she isn't surprised when he's hesitant to work with her. She is shocked, however, that he's unwilling to accept a sweetheart deal designed by the government to get him out of jail scot-free in exchange for rescuing two kidnapped kids without causing an international incident. What neither Phoebe nor Martell--the attorney working on behalf of the government--knows is that Ian has his own agenda for being in prison, and if he leaves, for whatever reason, it will threaten the people closest to him. So once they spring him, Ian takes Phoebe hostage, then must rescue his brother and his family from the mob, assemble a team, connect with the FBI, work out a rescue plan with limited resources, deal with the devil in the form of an international assassin and work through long-standing family issues while navigating a sizzling-yet-unwelcome attraction to his new, unasked-for attorney. As outlandish as the plot sounds on paper, Brockmann effortlessly and expertly tosses hundreds of details into the air and juggles them with brilliance. The first in her Reluctant Heroes series, the novel will captivate readers with its intense, action-filled plot, alpha-and-a-half hero, and his smart, perfect-for-him heroine, as well as secondary characters who contribute pathos and humor. Between avoiding the mob, finding the kids, and dealing with his growing feelings for Phoebe, Ian has his hands full. VERDICT Hard-hitting, fast-paced, and superbly plotted, this nonstop thriller will leave fans breathless and is a flawless start to Brockmann's new series. Meet the Author

Suzanne Brockmann

After childhood plans to become the captain of a starship didn’t pan out, Suzanne Brockmann took her fascination with military history, her respect for the men and women who serve, her reverence for diversity, and her love of storytelling and explored brave new worlds as a New York Times bestselling romance author. Over the past twenty years, she has written more than fifty novels, including her award-winning Troubleshooters series about Navy SEAL heroes and the women—and sometimes men—who win their hearts. In addition to writing books, Suzanne Brockmann has co-produced a feature-length movie, the award-winning romantic comedy The Perfect Wedding, which she co-wrote with her husband, Ed Gaffney, and their son, Jason. She has also co-written a YA novel, set in the world of her paranormal Fighting Destiny series, with her daughter, Melanie. Find Suzanne Brockmann on Facebook, follow her on Twitter, and visit her website to find out more about upcoming releases and appearances.

Biography

Although Suzanne Brockmann can't remember a time when she wasn't scribbling something (one of her earliest masterpieces was an action-packed radio play called "Mice on Mars"), she didn't begin to write seriously until she was married with young children. She spent several years trying to break into the super-competitive field of screenwriting before deciding to try her hand at genre fiction; and, it was only after months of intensive research that she finally homed in on Romance. In June of 1992, she sat down to write her first book. By year's end, she had completed ten manuscripts, and in August of 1993, she sold her first book, the contemporary romance Future Perfect.

Brockmann's first novels were stand-alones. But as her career progressed, she noticed that romance mini-series, with their opportunities for character development and intersecting story lines, had become extremely popular. Seeking to increase her readership, she decided to write a mini-series of her own. She found her "hook" in a magazine article on Navy SEALs and, in 1996, she released Prince Joe, the first novel in her Tall, Dark and Dangerous series. The alpha males of Brockmann's fictional SEAL Team 10 proved to be the perfect romantic heroes, and the series was an immediate hit with readers. Four years later, she launched a second series of military/romantic thrillers centered on the friendships, romances, and working relationships among a team of Navy SEALS and members of an elite security agency called Troubleshooters, Inc. Starting with The Unsung Hero in 2000, the Troubleshooters books have catapulted the author to the top of the charts.

Brockmann is known in the industry as a risk-taker, having written stories around such sensitive topics as interracial romance and homosexuality, In 2004, she garnered attention for her eighth Troubleshooters novel, Hot Target, which involved one of her most popular recurring characters, openly gay FBI agent Jules Cassidy, in a romantic subplot. Brockman, who dedicated the book to her gay son Jason, was not sure how readers would respond. To her surprise, the reaction from gay and straight alike proved positive. She stated on her website: "I love the fact that the world I've created in my books -- a diverse American world filled with the same variety of people who live in my urban American neighborhood -- has been so enthusiastically embraced by readers."

Brockmann's distinctive literary blend has come in for its fair share of praise. Writing in the Chicago Tribune, veteran Booklist reviewer John Charles stated: "Brockmann strikes the perfect balance between white-knuckle suspense and richly emotional romance." And USA Today has called her "[t]he reigning queen of militaray suspense." As further proof of her mainstream appeal, she remains one of a handful of Romance novelists to have made the leap from mass market paperback to hardcover.

Good To Know

In an interview with the online magazine All About Romance, Brockmann says: "I started reading when I was three (my first 'real' book was Beverly Cleary's Here Comes the Bus -- I remember this because no one believed that I was really reading it and I got really upset when my older sister took it back to the school library before I'd finished it!)."

A serious history buff from her youth, Brockmann has read widely on WWII and has been known to incorporate stories from that era into the books of her Troubleshooters series.

Brockmann loves music. She attended Boston University as a film major with a minor in creative writing but dropped out to perform with a rock and roll band. She also sang with and served as music director for a Boston-based a cappella group called "Serious Fun" and produced its first and only CD in 1998.

Brockman is married to novelist Ed Gaffney.

The mother of an openly gay son , Brockmann is a proud member of PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays).

In her writing, Brockmann employs a device she calls Deep Point of View. She explains it in an interview with the online writers' journal Writers Write: "In my books, I use subjective point of view, but I'm not satisfied with merely showing the reader what that camera sees from its perch atop a character's head. I bring the camera down, inside of that character's head, so we see the world through that character's eyes. We hear things through his ears. We smell what he smells, feel what he feels, think what he think. With deep POV, I write using words that that character would use. I tell the story with that character's voice."

Chapter One

Monday

Ian Dunn was not what she’d expected from reading his file.

Phoebe glanced at Martell Griffin, who was sitting beside her at the interview table. Even though he nodded very slightly to acknowledge her silent surprise, his eyes never left Ian and the guard who was escorting him into the little room. It was a reminder that this man—the prisoner—was dangerous.

On paper, Dunn had come across as the unscrupulous love child of Captain America and James Bond, capable of damn near anything. He was a former Navy SEAL turned international jewel thief—alleged international jewel thief, because he’d never been charged for that particular crime.

Still, after skimming the file that she’d been handed just this morning, Phoebe had imagined someone who looked more like Cary Grant. Someone slender and light on his feet. Someone capable of becoming invisible when wearing cat burglar black.

But this man in prison garb was built like a boxer. He was Mack truck huge. Piano mover massive.

His only hope at achieving invisibility would be if he tried disguising himself as a small planet or maybe a large moon. Provided it was a very dark night and everyone looking for him was drunk.

He was bigger than Martell, which was saying something, since the African American former-cop-turned-lawyer was tall enough to tower over Phoebe—remarkable since she’d been Amazonian herself since fifth grade.

But Ian Dunn made Martell look nearly undernourished, and Phoebe feel practically petite.

Along with being huge, Dunn was also sweaty. His prison-issue T-shirt was soaked around his collar, down his chest and beneath his arms, too, and it clung to his powerful upper body. The array of tattoos on his massive biceps gleamed as they stretched the edges of the fraying and faded orange sleeves.

His too-long dark brown hair was dripping onto his face, and as Phoebe watched he used the bottom hem of his shirt in an attempt to mop himself dry. As he did so, he displayed an impressive, glistening set of hard-cut abs along with the waistband of a pair of dull orange athletic shorts that he wore dangerously, precariously low on his hips.

And great, he’d lowered his shirt to find her staring at his crotch—her gaze had inadvertently traveled south, following the arrowlike trail of dark hair that pointed the way down from his near-perfect belly button as if it were a flashing neon sign.

Phoebe pushed her glasses up her nose, aimed her eyes at his face, and forced what she hoped was a polite, professional smile, even as he grinned down at her. His blue eyes were twinkling in a face that was broad and cheerful and big-boned with a nose that was too large and a brow that should have been much too heavy for him to be called handsome.

Should have been, but wasn’t.

Still, despite the fact that his winsome smile had the power to make the hearts of half the population flutter, Ian Dunn looked more like a man who threw oxen at the local county fair.

More, that is, than the criminal mastermind he allegedly was.

Except that wasn’t just a mix of good humor and wry appreciation gleaming now in his eyes as he continued to aim his amusement at her. As he pulled out the chair and flopped down into it, his entire manner was easygoing and relaxed, as if they were meeting at the picnic area of the local softball field where he was taking a break from the game—instead of in an interview room in a Florida state prison where he was halfway through an eighteen-month sentence.

But there was sharp intelligence in Dunn’s eyes, too.

Phoebe watched while he turned and nodded reassuringly at the guard, whose movements were almost apologetic as he used a short plastic restraint to lock the band around Dunn’s left ankle to a metal anchor in the floor.

The prisoner’s hands were cuffed, too, Phoebe realized, but he rested them on the table as if he barely noticed or maybe just didn’t give a damn.

“Nice to meet you in person, finally,” Dunn said in an evenly modulated, accent-free voice. His words were odd, because neither Phoebe nor Martell had so much as sent him a letter, let alone spoken to him on the phone. There hadn’t been time. She herself hadn’t known she was coming here until a short, chaotic hour ago. “But you know, if you’d called ahead, I would’ve showered and dressed for the occasion.”

He smiled as he turned slightly to glance over his broad shoulder at the door that closed behind the guard with a solid-sounding thunk.

It was then that his face almost imperceptibly hardened as he looked from Martell to Phoebe and then back to Martell as if he’d used his criminal mastermind to detect that, yes, Martell was in charge of this little meeting. His smile was still securely in place, though, as he leaned in and lowered his voice and asked, “Are you a friend of Conrad’s?”

Phoebe glanced at Martell, who narrowed his dark brown eyes slightly at Dunn as he asked, “Who’s Conrad?”

The intensity—if that was, in fact, what it was, and not merely her overactive imagination—vanished from Dunn’s eyes and face as quickly as it had appeared.

“Apparently not,” he said with a shrug as he sat back in his chair. “No big, just an acquaintance I thought might be mutual.” He folded his hands across his stomach, his movement limited by those cuffs. “So. What are you here to sell me? Although it’s probably best if you start with your names, so I can stop thinking of you as Diverse Lawyer One and”—he looked at Phoebe with another of those sunny smiles—“Diverse Lawyer Two.”

“I’m Martell Griffin,” Martell said. “And yes, Ms. Kruger and I are lawyers, but only she is here as your lawyer. She works for Bryant, Hill, and Stoneham.”

“Whoa, wait, really?” Dunn laughed but then frowned slightly as he asked Phoebe, “Is that . . .? That’s not . . .” He stopped himself and started over. “Where’s Uncle Jerry?”

Uncle who . . .? The question was as cryptic as the one about Conrad. Phoebe quickly glanced at Martell, but he shook his head in a silent I don’t know.

“J. Quincy Bryant. The B in B, H, and S,” Dunn explained, even though her silence hadn’t dragged on for that long. As easygoing as he pretended to be, this was not a patient man. “The J is for Jerry, at least for those of us whose granddads knew him before he was a total soulless douchebag.” His warm smile softened the potential edge of his words.

In fact, this man could announce I’m here to rob your house, and if he accompanied his words with one of those smiles, most people’s first reaction would be Oh, how nice. Do come in.

Phoebe looked down at her file in dismay, wondering how she’d failed to make note of the fact that one of the senior partners was this man’s uncle, although that certainly explained the reason the elite firm represented him. She wished someone had told her that she was going to have to deliver some very bad news to a family member.

“He’s not a real uncle, we’re not actually blood relations.” Dunn saw her face and again was quick with the explanation. “Don’t worry, you didn’t miss it, it’s not in there.”

Okay, that was good, except now what was she supposed to tell him? Anything? Or nothing?

“The relationship was more of a my-grandfather-died-saving-his-life-in-Vietnam thing,” Dunn continued almost cheerfully. “Uncle Jerry felt indebted. Although it would’ve been nice if the support had been more proactive. Grocery deliveries and rent assistance while I was still a kid instead of criminal defense after I’d crossed the line, you know what I mean? But hey. Better late than never, right?”

Phoebe knew, from a brief family history, that Dunn’s grandfather, John, had been KIA in Vietnam when Ian’s father, George, was just a boy. George, who had died from hepatitis four years ago, had been a lifer in prison in Concord, Massachusetts, locked up for his part in a robbery in which a security guard had been killed, albeit accidentally. And although it had never been proven, it was believed that Ian had learned at least some of his mad breaking-and-entering and burglary skills at an early age, from Dunn Senior, who’d learned it in turn from an uncle. A real one. That info was in her file, along with a long list of other allegedlies. Some of them pretty impressively crazy.

But the present-and-living Dunn had asked her a question. Where’s Uncle Jerry? She cleared her throat and decided it was best to be vague. “Mr. Bryant is currently unavailable.”

“No offense,” Dunn said easily, “and I’m sure you’re equally douche-tastic as a lawyer—and I mean that in a good way. But whatever you’re here for, Ms. Kruger, I’d prefer to wait until Unca Jer gets back from his vaca. Or you can ask the firm to send over his son-in-law, Bob-the-incompetent—if it really can’t wait.”

And now they were both looking at her.

Martell Griffin, too, had been surprised when Phoebe had been waiting for him outside the prison’s gates this morning. He clearly hadn’t expected Dunn to have representation present at this meeting—or maybe his surprise was that she wasn’t Mr. Bryant or his son-in-law, Bob Middleworth. Especially considering the magnitude of his offer.

And so Phoebe changed her mind. Both men needed an explanation, and outside the prison walls, the news had probably gone public anyway. “Mr. Bryant and Mr. Middleworth were injured in a car accident last night, and I’m so sorry to have to tell you, but Maureen Middleworth—Mr. Bryant’s daughter—was killed in the crash.”

“Oh, shit,” Dunn said.

“The firm’s experiencing some chaos,” Phoebe continued. “As I’m sure you can imagine.”

“I’m sorry,” Dunn said, with regret in his eyes. “Poor Jerry. He must be devastated. Bobby, too.” He shook his head, took a deep breath, and blew it out. “Wow. I appreciate your stepping up and filling in, Ms. Kruger, but . . . I can certainly wait a few weeks—months even if it takes that long—for Jerry to get back.”

Martell spoke up. “I’m sorry, but this situation, however, can’t wait.”

“It’s gonna have to,” Dunn said as he turned his gaze to Martell. He obviously and visibly appraised the lawyer’s well-fitting suit, his crisp white shirt, his brightly colored tie, as well as the hard planes and angles of a stern face that screamed serious business, accompanied by a gleaming and carefully shaved head. He appraised, but then immediately dismissed. Dunn’s body language was as clear as if he’d flicked away a used tissue. “Isn’t it.” He made his words a statement, not a question, and the testosterone levels in the room rose substantially as Martell bristled, appraising him back.

Lowlife, convict, prisoner scum was the silent message Martell sent in response to Dunn’s dismissal, but the prisoner’s response was only the smallest of mournful smiles. Which served to piss off the lawyer more thoroughly.

“Mr. Dunn, I realize this isn’t the best time, considering the circumstances, but aren’t you even the slightest bit curious?” Phoebe asked, because having the two men sit there in silence, staring each other down, wasn’t helping to move this meeting forward. And she had other things to do today.

Dunn again looked over at her, and she could practically see the wheels turning in his gigantic head as he tried to figure out the best way to push her buttons. And wasn’t that interesting? He really didn’t care why they were there. This meeting was little more than a game to him.

As Phoebe watched, he went for the obvious, with an insulting term of endearment. “Honey, I’m intensely curious—but only about things that really matter.” And yes, he put the cherry on top by proceeding to undress her with his eyes.

“I prefer to be called Ms. Kruger,” she corrected him, forcing herself to remain as expressionless as humanly possible. Still, she couldn’t stop herself from swallowing—damnit—because yikes, when he set his animal magnetism on kill like that, the man was a true force of nature.

And naturally, in turn, he made note of her almost microscopic gulp. His smile broadened.

Fine. Let him think he had the power to turn her knees into Jell-O. She, however, knew better.

“And this does matter,” she informed him crisply. “The reason Mr. Griffin requested this meeting—the reason your Uncle Jerry’s firm sent me here, with him, to talk to you. Matters. Immensely. Lives are at stake—starting but not ending with two innocent children.”

He laughed his surprise. “And only I have the secret code. Or something like that, right?”

“Or something like that,” she agreed, turning to Martell. She herself knew only the basics of the situation. But one thing she did know, with certainty, was that the deal the other lawyer was offering was a gift from on high. “Mr. Griffin, I believe that’s your cue.”

But Dunn was already shaking his head as he told Martell, “Whatever you think I know, you’re mistaken.”

“Whatever you tell us,” Phoebe interjected, despite having passed the invisible talking baton to Martell, “whatever you say, regardless of its legality, will not be used against you, now or in the future. You will receive immunity. Completely. I’ve made very sure of that.”

Martell chimed in: “Play your cards right, Mr. Dunn, and you will walk out of here, with us, today. A free man.”

Dunn laughed again, but his laughter faded as he looked from Martell to Phoebe. “Whoa, wait. He’s shitting me, right?”

She shook her head.

Dunn got very still as he gazed at Martell. “Who are you?”

“I’m here on behalf of, well, the government, is what it comes down to,” Martell told him, “even though I don’t work for them directly and I can’t be specific about the organization in charge of this mission. What you need to know is that I’m here to offer you your freedom, effective immediately, in exchange for your cooperation in—”

“No,” Dunn interrupted him, turning his chair as far as he could with his tether in place. “No way. No deal. No thanks. Not interested.” He raised his voice and called toward the door, “Hey, Roger, we’re done in here!”

This time it was Martell who was so surprised that he laughed. “Are you kidding?” He looked at Phoebe as if she could help. “Is he kidding? He wants to stay in prison?”

She shook her head. She, too, was clueless.

Which was proving to be a not-unusual state for her in this, her first week of employment at the prestigious law firm. Upon her arrival, she’d been thrown into the deep end of the pool, assigned to assume the caseloads of three lawyers who’d recently been jettisoned. She’d spent most of the past week paddling desperately just to keep her head above water.

And then today had happened, creating even more chaos. Since she was one of the few lawyers who’d never met the boss’s poor deceased daughter, she’d been hurriedly handed Ian Dunn’s file, which was marked Top Priority. And the waves she’d thought were formidable turned out to be mere swells as this latest tsunami washed over her. It was part of her new normal.

And that was a total change of reality for her, since she prided herself on her ability to always—always—be one of the few people with a clue in any given room.

But now that she’d met him, it was clear that Ian Dunn’s file was incomplete. Phoebe was going to have to dig deeper to figure out what made him tick. Which she would do as soon as she found both a little time and some Internet access.

“Roger!” Dunn called again. “Where the hell are you?”

But Martell stood up and knocked on the table in front of the man. “He won’t come back in until I tell him we’re done. And we’re not done until you listen to what I have to offer, and then walk out of here with me, because that’s what sane people do when they’re handed a Get Out of Jail Free card.”

Dunn looked from Martell to Phoebe, and his eyes were no longer warm. In fact they were positively steely. “I’ve been locked up for nearly a year, so maybe things have changed out beyond these walls. Is that really legal now?” he asked her. “Forcing me to do something I’m unwilling to do?”

She cleared her throat. “This is an unusual circumstance. Not only are those children’s lives at stake, but from what I understand, this is a matter of national security. And Mr. Griffin is offering you quite a—”

“I’m not interested in what he’s offering. While I wish you luck in finding someone who can help you save the world, it’s not gonna be me. Not this time.”

Phoebe blinked at him. “As your lawyer, Mr. Dunn, I highly recommend that you—”

“You’re not my lawyer,” Dunn said evenly, almost pleasantly, “and I don’t give a shit what you recommend. No deal. Get me out of here. Now.”

High tension and a great read!

    RATING: Five Stars!

    ABOUT THE BOOK:

He’s not your typical Navy SEAL. Nor is he your typical Troubleshooter.

He’s the guy who pretends he’d rather walk away. The guy who gets involved with the rescue of two little kidnapped children only because he has to—because he’s essentially blackmailed into helping. Or so he claims.

It’s fun to watch his head explode as he meets his match in a smart, funny heroine who sees beneath his facade and stands up to him every step of the journey.

    MY REVIEW:

I’ve turned into a Suzanne Brockmann fan with this, and I’m kicking myself for not reading her stories earlier! This was a highly enjoyable read, and like I said in a previous status update on Goodreads…if I could give it six stars, I would.

These characters were funny, engaging, and I loved how in depth the author was able to keep the reader in their minds. You don’t get bored reading this book, in fact; it keeps you up throughout the night if you’re not careful.

Ian and Phoebe find a way to make their angst for each other known. Not only that, they make no bones about how much they really don’t want to like one another. I love the internal argument both have with themselves and found myself laughing out loud at some of the excuses they throw.

The action of this book is definitely packed, and like I said before, you won’t be able to put it down. The sexiness of the story is also off the charts, giving you the full recipe for an engaging and smexy read.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take their romantic suspense reads a step above the norm. This book will turn you into a believer, and a fan of Ms. Brockmann.

    Five out of five stars.

    I Also Recommend:

This was a fun, enjoyable summer read where you could just kick

This was a fun, enjoyable summer read where you could just kick back and enjoy the ride that this book took you on. The secondary characters were great I especially loved Adam and Shelley. I am interested to see where Francine will go, because while at times I hated her you couldn't help but love the moments where she let her guard down. I look forward to more in this series. Ian Dunn is in prison when Phoebe first meets him. She is his new attorney and is there to help broker a deal for him to be released from prison on the condition that he help save two abducted children who are being kept at a foreign consulate. But Ian is content right where he is and he has no desire to be set free. But when things are put into motion Ian must take on the task of rescuing these children while trying to keep his family safe. The pace is quick moving, with only one or two lulls as this succumbs to first book in a series syndrome. The characters are given enough meaning and background to intrigue you and keep watch for their future books. If you're going in looking for strictly straight romance, you'll probably be disappointed as I would categorize this as Suspense first and then romance. If you are a fan of movies or tv shows like "24" then this is a must read for you, Brockmann's writing is incredibly strong.

I love Suzanne Brockmann's books but.....

Caution readers - I think we can all acknowledge that the author is a terrific writer and can make a tired plotline come to life, but this is not a romance. It is more of an action packed / gay agenda driven book as has her last couple of books have been. Maybe the author should give up all pretense and label her books as a gay romance with lots of action. After every action packed tense page when I finally finished I realized that this book was an exhausting rather than a fulfilling read. I think all of the readers know that the author has a gay son, but sometimes I really wish that her books did not have a gay agenda or maybe she needs to switch genres to gay romances.

    Plot spoilers

Come on bn. Please do something to these longwinded plot spoilers who rewrite the book in their so called book reviews. They brag about getting their books for free, then proceed to tell every detail of the story ruining it for others who may wish to buy it. Who wants to buy a book when some rude person has already told the entire story????

    Must read

Suzanne Brockman NEVER. disappoints and this book continues to prove that to be true. Do or Die has it all and that makes it darn near impossible to put down until you reach the end.

Do or Die is my first book by Suzanne Brockmann. So many people

Do or Die is my first book by Suzanne Brockmann. So many people that know I like romantic suspense have recommended her books and I can see why. Do or Die is the first of her her new Reluctant Heroes series and it starts out with a wild ride. There is so much going on in Do or Die - multiple points of view (not just the main hero and heroine), a multifaceted rescue mission that continues to change and multiple love stories in this book.

The first thing I can say about Do or Die is that I love Suzanne’s writing. The plot was well planned out and delivered fantastically. Not only was the plot complicated, but she has such a such a way with words and descriptions. She takes her characters points of view and really adds in their personality to the words, so it is almost as if many people wrote the book. Because of that I really enjoyed that multiple points of view in this story. It wasn’t just the main hero or heroine, but I think almost every member of the rescue team was heard from at some point or another.

Do or Die is heavier on the suspense and lighter on the romance. The intimate moments are more vague and implied rather than descriptive. However, there is a lot of love going round in this book. It is more subtle since there is a huge rescue mission going on and the team is always on the run, but you get to see it all. Ian and Phoebe are the main hero and heroine in the book and I really enjoyed watching them spar off against one another. While many people backed down to Ian as the mission leader, Phoebe didn’t. Even though she is way out of her element as a lawyer, Phoebe doesn’t fawn all over Ian but tries to do what she thinks is right, regardless of what he thinks. It is her stubborn personality that Ian falls in love with. In addition to Ian and Phoebe’s love story we also got to read about Aaron and Sheldon’s love story. This was quite fascinating to me since I had not read anything like it before. Family love is so strong in this story as well.

Some of the little things I really enjoyed in Do or Die are the quirky things that kept popping up and the characters sense of humor in general. One of the characters named Martell has a car he considers a piece of crap and even when all other vehicles continue to get trashed for one reason or another his car makes it through everything.

The ending was really cool. Suzanne included an ending (or new beginning) for each of the characters on Ian’s team. I found some to be unexpected but others to be spot on with what I would want. The overall ending worked out great for the story and has caused me to remain interested in reading future books in this series. I feel as though I have really gotten to know all the characters and am not quite ready to let them go. If you like romantic suspense that will engage you from the beginning, and keep you on the edge or your seat, I recommend you give Do or Die a try.

Do or Die is a highly complex, fast paced, action filled adventure.

The sexual attraction between Phoebe and Ian is so thick it can be cut by a knife but this isn't just a story about them...its a story about family...a family made not born by blood.

I was captivated by Brockmann's story from the beginning and it held me till the end. The plot is twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat. As they run from the mob, they must out wit terrorists and keep their family safe. Suspense, mystery, romance, deception ,Do or Die is a terrific high velocity read.

I received this ARC copy of Do or Die from Random House - Ballantine Books in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication February 4, 2014.

    This book was great!
Ian is an ex navy seal on his own mission protecting the people that mean the most to him. Phoebe is a lawyer who is trying to be Ians lawyer but can't help but getting sucked into Ian's mission wether he or she likes it or not.
I laughed, I cried, and I had a great time with Ian and Phoebe. They were both as individuals very likeable but together they were explosive. I would recommend this book to everyone who wants a funny, touching, action packed sexy romance that just keeps on giving!

This is book one in the Reluctant Heroes series and it was awesome!  Fast paced, action packed adventures of Ian Dunn, ex-Navy SEAL,  turned Jewel thief, and his team. Ian's character just kept surprising me.  He and Phoebe have amazing chemistry together.  The secondary characters were fantastic also!  So much was happening in this story and I don't like overly long reviews, so let me just say that this was an awesome first book in a spin-off series.  Suzanne Brockmann does not disappoint!  Sexy ex-Navy SEALs , beautiful lawyers, FBI, the mob, terrorists, and WOW, what more could you ask for?  A fantastic love story, of course!

This is the first Suzanne Brockmann book I have read and am thrilled that I did. I don't usually read romance thrillers, but this was great. I notice some people are put off by the gay couple and if you have a problem with that lifestyle then you probably won't like the book. I thought it was well done and worked into the storyline in an acceptable way, to me anyway, and all the characters are "out there". I thought it was a great book. Exciting, really witty and funny and hard to find a stopping point. I thought the characters of Phoebe and Ian were great and I look forward to the next Reluctant Hero.

Ian Dunn is an ex-Navy SEAL and thought to be a con artist and jewel thief. He made a deal with a war lord to claim to have committed a crime that the crime boss's son actually committed. Doing this gets him an 18 month jail sentence and an agreement that the war lord will not kill Ian's brother. Half way through his sentence, the FBI approaches him with a deal that would set him free. If he agrees to help in freeing kidnapped children of a nuclear physicist from the Kazbekistani consulate, he will be released from jail. Ian has to stay in jail and refuses the offer but FBI persists and Ian gets out of jail, which sets off a chain of dangerous events. Ian meets his lawyer, Phoebe Kruger, and Martell Griffin, when they offer him this deal.

Ian and Phoebe got off to a rocky start since Ian didn't want her as his lawyer but they turned out to be really good for each other. Ian needed to be in control and has always looked out for everyone he cared for without thinking about himself. Phoebe was a pretty strong woman and didn't take crap from anyone.  She did some dumb things but she didn't know they were not the best way to handle the situations.  Everything always turned out OK and she understood Ian better than anyone, understanding the real reason for his need for control. Their bickering added humor to this book. And then there was the sexual attraction that added.... heat.

All the characters were well developed. Ian and Phoebe were the main characters in this story but Ian's brother, Aaron and his spouse, Sheldon, played a big part too.  I felt like it was almost as much their story as Ian and Phoebe's. There were many secondary characters who all played important parts in this thriller.

I found it to have a slow start and was hard to get interested in during the first quarter of the book. But once I got past that there was lots of action and this thriller had me hooked.

    First disappointment with Brockmann

If this book followed the blurb, it would have been better. The gay couple and their anguished problems took over the story and the actual "rescue" didn't come into play into the book until the last 100 pages. I really waited for this to come out...glad I waited and read the library's copy...saved money.

So glad she wrote a new series ¿Do or Die¿ by Suzanne Brockmann

So glad she wrote a new series

“Do or Die” by Suzanne Brockmann is the first book in her new Reluctant Hero’s series, a spin off of the Troubleshooters series.  As with all of her other books, it grabs you in the first sentence and doesn’t let you go.  This book almost seemed like two books in one.  In fact, when you get to just about the middle of the book, there is a change of rhythm and there is a page titled “Part Two”, “Charlie Foxtrot” and that is where the story changes.

Part one introduces you to the main characters, Former Navy SEAL Ian Dunn and his new to him Lawyer, Phoebe Kruger.  Ian is in prison and Phoebe goes to the prison with Martell Griffin (from the Troubleshooters series), to get Ian released so that a mysterious government agency can task Ian with rescuing two kidnapped children from a South American Embassy.  The problems start when Ian does not want to be released due to a “deal” he has made with the mob, and Martell and Phoebe don’t give him a chance to say no.  Fast forward ahead and without giving out any spoilers, in Part Two, Ian, Phoebe and Martell along with some FBI agents that are part of Jules Cassidy’s team are now trying to keep Ian safe and his family alive all while trying to figure out a way to help rescue the children.

If you love Suzanne Brockmann’s books you will love this new series.  If you have never read a Suzanne Brockmann book before you can start with this one and not feel as if you are missing anything.  You will fall in love with her characters, warts and all. You will laugh and cry and hold your breath all along the journey you take with them to reach the end of the story.  I am so glad that this has been advertised as the first book in her new series because that means I can count on more excitement from Suzanne. I can’t wait.
