They are the Duke’s Men: an investigative agency born from family pride and irresistible passion, risking their lives—and sometimes their hearts—as they unravel shocking deceptions and scandalous transgressions!

Victor Cale never imagined that his sweet, shy bride, Isabella, would use her talent for creating exquisite imitation jewels in a criminal way. But there’s no denying that Isa’s handiwork was used in the brazen heist of the Dutch royal family’s diamonds—after she disappeared into the night.

Ten years later, still reeling from her betrayal and enraged that her duplicitous side was so undetectable, Victor is sent to Edinburgh to investigate a wealthy baron’s mysterious brideto- be. Simple enough—until the “fiancée” proves to be Isa, masquerading as an alluring young widow.

No longer the meek and mild girl he once knew, the bold woman vehemently asserts that it was Victor who abandoned her after he helped steal the royal diamonds! Piecing together the truth of the past reawakens their volatile passion, which burns hotter than ever. But with a decade of secrets between them, Victor and Isa must trust each other in order to bring the real thieves to justice—without getting burned themselves.

Ten years earlier, newlyweds Isabella and Victor Cale's lives were shattered when treachery and distrust (and some stolen royal jewels) drove them apart and out of each other's lives. For years, Victor searched for Isa and for years she hid. Now, as an investigator for Manton's Investigations, Victor heads to Edinburgh to look into the background of a local nobleman's intended. Of course, the respectable widow, an expert paste jeweler, turns out to be Isa, and suddenly both their worlds change as they come to terms with what really happened a decade ago. VERDICT Plot twists galore, a pair of appealing, conflicted protagonists, and a cadre of delightful secondary characters make this a perfect addition to Jeffries's "Duke's Men" series. This beautifully crafted romance reveals the gradual but exquisite renewing of a broken relationship; sure to become a keeper for the author's many fans. Jeffries (What the Duke Desires) lives in Cary, NC.

When the Rogue Returns is the second book in Sabrina Jeffries's

When the Rogue Returns is the second book in Sabrina Jeffries's new series about The Duke's Men, detectives from Manton's Investigation, who, at one point, worked for the Duke of Lyons on a very important mission.

Unfortunately, I haven't read the first book in this new series, but I found that this book stood alone quite well and provided just enough back story to keep me informed. Most people know that I am not a huge fan of historical romance, but that rule has never applied to Sabrina Jeffries books. I just LOVE her stories!! Her characters completely charm you and draw you into the story. This setting was slightly different from most HR stories, as it did not take place in London. The story is actually split between the Netherlands and Edinburgh...how original. We meet our characters when our lead, Isa, is just 18 years old and newly married. You can tell there is tension and she is slightly frighten by her sister and brother-in-law and the husband, Victor, seems very sweet and devoted. I didn't like Isa so much in the beginning but Victor had my attention from the first page...he sounds yummy. Enter the plot point that will drive our characters apart and we time jump 10 years into the future, to current day. Victor and Isa are estranged, both believing the other to be a criminal and a liar, guilty of abandonment. Victor wants revenge and the opportunity actually falls into his lap...a bit unbelievable, but just roll with it. Isa and Victor come face to face and the chemistry and the hatred is off the charts!!! It was fun to watch the story unfold and to see how the misunderstandings would be handled. I enjoyed their banter and this is when I truly began to love Isa's character. She grew strong and independent and became a force to be reckoned with. The new Victor and Isa were far more exciting than the young kids they began as. I won't give the plot away, but what I will say, is that this was a fun read. I was transported to another time and enjoyed all of the characters. I now need to go back and read the first book in the series and keep an eye out for the next one. If you don't read HR, at least give Sabrina Jeffries a try...I bet she'll change your mind.

When the Rogue Returns (Book 2 in The Duke's Men series)

Victor & Isa were married almost 10 years ago.  Due to Isa's family they were separated shortly
after they married.  Her sister (Jacoba) and brother-in-law (Gerhart) stole jewels where they worked,
Telling Isa her husband not only helped but later telling her that the only reason he married her was to get to
the jewels in the first place. Isa was working in the jewelers store before hand making fake gems for women
who wanted to look like they had real gems but could not afford them.

Victor has been searching for his wife for over 9 years.  He wanted justice and revenge for
what Isa and her family did to him. He finally found due to a case at Manton's Investigation.
Lady Lochlaw wanted the widow with whom her son was involved with investigated.

Victor arrives in Scotland and finds out that the "widow" was indeed his wife.

Both Victor and Isa have a lot of work to do to unravel the truth about what happened years ago.

Sabrina's sequel to What the Duke Desires is fantastic.  I was laughing and crying so hard through it.
I can not wait to read the next in the series.  I highly recommend this to everyone.

I really enjoyed this great book. The Duke's Men series is getting better with each book. This storyline was unique and I have not read a story about a fake jewel maker before. Isa ,aka Sofia, was a great character that grows thru the story. She began the story as a "Mouse" but ends as a great lioness. She would scratch, growl, chew and even eat anyone that hurt the ones she loves! Victor is a man made by his past. His father was a deceitful man who shame all who was related to him. His one week old wife left him by leaving a hurtful letter behind. He is accused of a theft of the royal jewels that his wife and family stole. Now he is a newly minted cousin of a duke and has money and could live a live of ease. But all Victor wants is "REVENGE" from his wife but he has to find her first. Who better to help then "The Duke's Men". This book receives my top review score of 5 fingers up and 10 toes. It's a must read!!

I loved this book. It was a little far fetched but I couldn't stop reading it. I loved everything about Victor, Isa and Amalie. I enjoyed reading how Isa grow to be such a strong person and how Victor came to believe in himself as a man. This book has everything you want in a historical romance, love, suspense and sexual tension. I can not wait for the books to come in this series.

Sabrina Jeffries delivers another great book!

This is the second book in the Duke's Men series. I really enjoy seeing the same characters again. Mystery, intrigue, sex and likable --- or dislikable --- characters draw me in and keep me there until the end of the book. Victor and Isa share love and secrets. Can one overcome the other? Will they be able to forge a new life together, despite scheming relatives? I can't wait for the NEXT book in the series!

I had not read the first in The Duke¿s Men series, but I had no

I had not read the first in The Duke’s Men series, but I had no problem picking up with the story or following the storyline.  Sabrina Jeffries managed to draw me into the story early with the clever characters and mystery to solve.

When you add in a second chance romance, between two who very obviously loved one another deeply and passionately, and mix in family and treacherous characters that would rather see them apart than together and the story runs from one high point to another, and the entire afternoon has passed by without notice.

Both Isa and Victor are hurt and angry with one another. Ten years believing the worst of the person you loved is a long time, and their reintroduction is both volatile and telling.  Victor is serious and constrained, with deeply ingrained issues from his childhood and from fighting accusations of theft after Isa’s disappearance.  Isa has heard little good about Victor, her family was malicious and meddling, and it doesn’t seem as if anyone really had HER best interests at heart.

This story was a delight as we see them learn about each other after all of the years apart, both fighting their own long-held prejudices against one another as the flame between them is obviously burning bright.  Heartwrenching as they start to realize all that they had lost in the years apart, the road to together is not a smooth one for them.

Then we have the real villain in the story: the criminal who was the true thief and their continued efforts to manipulate the relationship and further their own position.  It doesn’t help that Isa is a master of paste gems: this little inclusion into the story was a wonderfully unique spin, and gave our heroine a solid career and obvious talent, unusual in historical romances and so very welcome.

This is a hard won romance and all the sweeter for it. With some wonderfully sexy and sweet moments, plenty of tension and clever dialog, this is a wonderful read.

I received an eArc copy from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility

I'm a long-time (now) fan of Sabrina Jeffries so it was nice to

I'm a long-time (now) fan of Sabrina Jeffries so it was nice to read this book. I recently read (though did not review) the first book in the series, but didn't realize it until I was a good way through this one. I just knew the Duke and his wife seemed familiar and it nagged at me until I realized why.

Now, as to this book. You absolutely do not have to have read the first book in The Duke's Men series. This one stands alone, though you see some familiar faces in the forms of the other members of the investigation agency that Victor works for.

I enjoyed the push/pull/hostility between Victor and Isa as they worked under the lies they'd been told so many years ago. Isa of course is hiding a much bigger secret than Victor can possibly know, not having seen her in so long, and she handles the situation as best she can. She knows she's legally in the wrong (the whole "women are property" thing that was so common in the area) as far as being separated from him and he can claim certain things without any way of retaliating, so I can't blame her for hiding what she does.

The only sour (sort of) note for me was the resolution of those responsible for the lie that kept Victor and Isa apart for so many years. I can't really go into what bothers me about it without spoiling it and it's not such a big deal that I absolutely have to share (and thus blank it out here on the blog). I just wish one of the parties hadn't gotten off quite as lightly as they did.

The one additional thought I had on this story was, despite the fact that it was a vicious, horrible lie that split them, I think the ten years apart really did these characters a lot of good. They both grew and matured enormously. Isa would never have become quite the same vivacious woman that Victor falls in love with (again) if they'd been together, and given how strong a person she became in the ten years, I think it was (almost) worth the pain of their separation. I really found much to admire in Isa and how she chose to deal with the cards life dealt her.

On the whole, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. 4-stars without reservation.

I enjoyed this book. There was lots of action yet it was different from what I have read recen. It takes place after Napoleon is out of the way. The story is based more on the Continent than England. Sabrina has developed totally evil characters. I could find no redemption for them. Isa is married to Victor, a jeweler' s guard. She makes the best paste jewelry for people who want the best but not pay big money for it. Her sister and brother-in-law get them both into a jewelry heist then send messages to separate them. Forward to Scotland 10 years and Isa is a partner in a jewelry store designing paste jewelry and also cleaning real gems. Victor finds Isa and is surprised that he has a daughter. Needless to say there is kidnapping, a house party jewelry heist recovery and deciding how to get rid of the sister and brother-in-law from their lives. This was a good read and would be a good re-read. Enjoy!

A good story, but definitely not my favorite from this author. T

A good story, but definitely not my favorite from this author. The two main characters took way too long to be honest with each other--their initial hesitation made sense, but after a while it got to be ridiculous, especially since they both got hugely upset when they found out the other one was hiding something from them. (Hello? Pot? Kettle? You're equal in your blackness, so get over it already!) Other than that, Victor and Isa/Sofie were likable characters overall.

Ultimately, the last third or so redeemed the book for me. At one point I was afraid they were reverting back to their old ways, but they proved me wrong so nothing got tossed across the room (I was listening on audio, so book tossing would have involved earbuds being ripped out of my ears. I was very glad to have my fears proven wrong, believe me!) The ending is immensely satisfying, and helped me to get over much of my frustration with the book.

Some of the secondary characters' immense likability helps matters as well--Amalie, their daughter, is charming; Rupert and Mary Grace's secondary romance is adorable; and Sofie's business partner Mr. Gordon is an all-around great guy. Tristan and Dominick, the brothers who run Manton Investigations, are  as entertaining as ever, and I cannot wait until they have their own books.

The science too was interesting, both of Sofie's artificial gems and Rupert's studies. I didn't quite "get" it all, but it sounded impressive. ;) Ms. Jeffries's afterword showed that she had clearly done her research in that arena.

Part of my dissatisfaction with this novel stemmed from the audio performance--I couldn't stand the voice the narrator used for Isa/Sofie. It always sounded as if she had a mouthful of marbles when she spoke, and it was distracting. Perhaps if I'd have read it instead of listening, I would have rated it higher.

So far the first book in the series is still my favorite. I wouldn't go so far as to say this one was a disappointment, it just didn't quite live up to the standards of book one. Hopefully the next offering from The Duke's Men will be more consistent in its execution.

    Enjoyable read

This is the second book in this series. I really like the fact that none of the characters are your general regency era charactes. The story lines are in a different vein which is a nice change, also. I have read the book twice - which tells you it is not boring. Anyway, Victor and Isabella (Sofie) are two flawed people that find their way back to each other.

I am a HUGE Sabrina Jefferies fan and absolutely loved this book!!
Victor and Isa were torn apart from each other because of greed with Isa’s family. As a reader you find out pretty quick what Isa’s family did to them, however both Victor and Isa have to learn what truly happened and how much damage Jacoba and Gerhardt caused them. I enjoyed reading about their story with coming to grips that both were lied to and also having to learn to trust each and not let their insecurities cloud their judgment. This is a definite read for any historical romance fan!

When the Rogue Returns is the second book in the Dukes Men serie

When the Rogue Returns is the second book in the Dukes Men series and thoroughly enjoyable. Victor Cale, newly appointed agent for the Dukes Men, is sent to investigate a widow, who sounds very much like his wife Isabelle a jewel forger and thief, who abandoned him 10 years ago. She copied the Dutch royal diamonds, then exchanged them for the real ones and absconded with her family.
Isabelle Cale has a gift for making beautiful paste jewelry, she can even copy jewelry which her family decided to take advantage of much to her disdain.
Even her husband took advantage of her, abandoning her 10 years ago taking the real Dutch royal diamonds with him.
This is was a very interesting story that just got better and better as the story progressed. Victor and Isabelle clearly loved each other once very much but trust had became an problem between them when they met up again.
Isabelle was very young at the beginning of the story, and I liked how her character had matured over the 10 years she was on her own, she was more in control of her life.
Victor was a nice character, seemed bit lost at times, he'd like to find his wife and and ask her why she abandoned him. He was very kind to Isabelle's friend a young Baron who really had no idea how to talk to a young lady let alone court one, he needed help, he was great.
There was goods guys and bad guys, action, and steamy romance, what more can you ask for. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next book in the series.

WHEN THE ROGUE RETURNS by Sabrina Jeffries is an exciting Regenc

WHEN THE ROGUE RETURNS by Sabrina Jeffries is an exciting Regency Historical Romance. #2 in “The Duke’s Men”, but can be read as a stand alone. See, “What the Duke Desire”.
“They are the Duke’s Men: an investigative agency born from family pride and irresistible passion, risking their lives—and sometimes their hearts—as they unravel shocking deceptions and scandalous transgressions!”
This is the story of Victor Cale and his sweet, shy bride, Isabella. Or is she as shy and sweet as Victor, a war veteran believes?
Fast paced and action packed. With vengeance, lots of passion, a secret or two, betrayal, old hurts, and love that last through nine years of heartache, and betrayal. Isa, aka, Mrs. Sophie Franke,a jewelry designer, is living in Scotland now, with her young daughter, after running from Paris and her family and the betrayal she thought her beloved husband, Victor had done. Victor, is now an investigator with new family ties, and friends. He is living in England, and living with the betrayal he believed his beloved Isa committed. He has been sent to Scotland to investigate one Mrs. Franke, who he recognizes as his Isa, for she is using his mother’s maiden name.
He is out for revenge, on both her and her family.
Packed with heartache, lies, mystery, a bit of suspense, deceit, mis-use of family love and the power of true love. When Victor learns Isa has a truly big secret, he is beside himself. Their love and passion re-ignite after years apart. But Isa’s family once again threaten their new beginning. Victor enlists the help of his fellow investigators, The Duke’s Men. Together, can they save his daughter, he just learned of who has been kidnapped, and bring justice upon Isa’s sister and brother- in- law.
To find out you must not miss, “When a Rogue Returns”. Amalie is a delightful young lady, who finds her father at long last. While, shocked to learn he is not dead, she is delighted, for she may just get what she has always wanted, a FATHER of her own, like other little girls. A powerful story of the true bond between love. But it is a stretch between love and hate, revenge and justice.
An absolute delight! Well done, Ms. Jeffries. I could not stop turning pages, to see what happened between Isa, Victor and Amalie. Oh I guess I needed to know how the drama with Isa’s family played out too. I can hardly wait for the next installment. Will love find the other Duke’s Men? Oh I believe so….laugh now, The Duke’s Men, but you will soon find your true love too. A must read! And a not to miss series!! Received for an honest review from the publisher and Net Galley.

The luster went out of their wedded bliss as soon as Victor Cale

The luster went out of their wedded bliss as soon as Victor Cale suspected his young bride of using her talent for duplicating jewels with criminal intent. But she disappears after the Dutch royal family’s diamonds are stolen, so what is he to believe? It’s ten years later, and as one of the Duke’s Men investigative agency, Victor is sent to Edinburgh to investigate a wealthy baron’s intended. He’s flabbergasted when the bride-to-be turns out to be none other than his wife, Isabella decked out in widow’s weeds. Isa has matured into a confident woman who swears she had nothing to do with the stolen diamonds. She always thought Victor was responsible and had deserted her. Finally realizing they’ve both been deceived, Victor and Isa work together to unearth the real culprits and rebuild the trust they once had in each other.

If you’ve not read Jeffries’ Duke’s Men series, grab your copy now. Although When the Rogue Returns can be read as a standalone, you’ll not want to miss What the Duke Desires. Both entertain from page one until the end. I especially enjoyed watching Victor and Isa in their search for the bad guys and their emotional journey towards their happy ever after. Would recommend for anyone who enjoys adventure with their romance. Eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
