Meet the Author

Sidney Sheldon

The novelist and screenwriter Sidney Sheldon remains one of the world’s top bestselling authors, having sold more than 300 million copies of his books. Are You Afraid of the Dark? was his most recent in a long line of huge hits on bestseller lists everywhere. He is also the only writer to have won an Oscar, a Tony, and an Edgar Award. The Guinness Book of World Records heralds him as the most translated author in the world. Sidney Sheldon passed away on January 30, 2007.

Biography

Best known today for his exciting blockbuster novels, Sidney Sheldon was the author of The Best Laid Plans, Nothing Lasts Forever, The Stars Shine Down, The Doomsday Conspiracy, Memories of Midnight, The Sands of Time, Windmills of the Gods, If Tomorrow Comes, Master of the Game, Rage of Angels, Bloodline, A Stranger in the Mirror, and The Other Side of Midnight. Almost all of them were number-one international bestsellers. His first book, The Naked Face, was acclaimed by the New York Times as "the best first mystery of the year" and received an Edgar Award. Most of his novels became major feature films or TV miniseries, and there are more than 275 million copies of his books in print throughout the world.

Before he became a novelist, Sheldon had already won a Tony Award for Broadway's Redhead and an Academy Award for The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer. He has written the screenplays for twenty-three motion pictures, including Easter Parade (with Judy Garland) and Annie Get Your Gun. In addition, he penned six other Broadway hits and created three long-running television series, including Hart to Hart and I Dream of Jeannie, which he also produced. A writer who delighted millions with his award-winning plays, movies, novels, and television shows, Sidney Sheldon reigned as one of the most popular storytellers of all time.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Sheldon:

"When I was 17, I was happy to be working in a drugstore, because I could steal enough sleeping pills to commit suicide."

"I have bi-polar syndrome and was not aware what was disturbing me until I received an Academy Award and went to see a psychiatrist."

"I have worked 7 days a week as long as I can remember. A business manager of mine gave me $25 worth of tennis lessons. I went down to my tennis court and we played once a week. I really enjoyed it. Playing with the pro one day, my teacher said to me that the money had been spent and did I want to continue. I started to say yes, then I realized that I didn't want to be out on the tennis court. I wanted to be in my office writing. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been on my tennis court since."

    If Tomorrow Comes

From the beginning to end, If Tomorrow Comes catches the reader¿s attention. Sidney Sheldon created a strong female character named Tracy Whitney. She is faced with life-threatening conflicts throughout the novel and loses everyone she cares about. Sidney Sheldon makes it hard for the reader to set down the book. There is action and suspense that keeps you wanting more. Tracy Whitney encounters numerous conflicts all throughout the story. She spends her time getting revenge on the men that ruined her life. In the beginning Tracy has a fairytale life. She is about to be married to the man of her dreams and is pregnant. Due to the loss of a family member, she encounters the man who ruined her family¿s life, Joe Romano. He not only caused the death of her mother but also got her thrown into jail for robbery. Tracy Whitney serves time in jail and plans her escape. She rescues a young girl and is released early. This is when she starts to plot her retaliation upon everyone who made her life miserable. The story is thrilling from start to finish. I would not recommend this book to children under the age of thirteen because of obscene language and sexual content. In every chapter something happens that is life changing to young Tracy. She manages to get back at her enemies, without actually killing them herself. Tracy Whitney is not a realistic character, or stock. I don¿t believe that she could handle all of the things she went through especially, when it happens so drastically. She is unpredictable and doesn¿t do anything she seems to intend to do. This book is mysterious, Tracy Whitney keeps you on the edge of your seat with suspense. This book is remarkable because it shows how to remain strong through everything no matter what happens to you. The only person that is there for you is yourself, and no one else can make you happy or be there for you. Sidney Sheldon really knows how to keep you in suspense. I recommend this book to everyone over the age of 13.

    Great Read

Sheldon wrote many, many novels but this 1 ranks among the top 4 with me, coming in at #4. 'Master of the Game' is #1. Omg, Sheldon is such a master storyteller.

    Totally Readable

When I started reading this book, I immediately sensed the originality in it. The style in which Sheldon depicts Tracy Whitney is very pitiable. She is convicted for something that is in no way her fault. Then she has to go through all the atrocities of a prison and its inmates. The rest of the book is so vividly put down that it's actually very hard t o explain it unless it is read. From all the books of Sydney Sheldon that I've read-which are almost all, with the exception of two-I KNOW and not think that 'If Tomorrow Comes' is THE best Sheldon book ever.

    All-time #1 Novel

I read this book when I was about 13 and more than a decade later, it's still my number one favorite. The plot is amazing and I have to come back to Sydney Sheldon any time I think my standards are slipping. The depth of his knowledge from travels to his character development were top-notch. I just read his biography and what an amazing man. Had to come back and give him credit for being my favorite.

best book i have ever read. hands down.

i read this book when i was only 15 and still into all those cutesy romantic teen books. it was one of the first 'adult' books i ever read. ive now read it 3 times and it NEVER gets old. i absolutely love the quick thinking and exciting heists she pulls off to get her revenge. sydney sheldon has written some amazing books but this is by far the most exciting and BEST one.

One of my all time favorite novels. . .

I read this book more than ten years ago and it is still one of my favorites. Sidney Sheldon's travels speak volumes in his works. He brings in other cultures so naturally and the characters are more developed because of it. Tracy and Jeff are con artists who share a relationship that grows as they compete to get the next con job. Great personalities in this book and their stand offs are memorable. Great read!

    an absolute must have!!!

I wasn't much of a book reader to begin with, but my mother read this book and told me that I absolutely must read it. So I gave it a chance and I could not find myself to put it down. It's was the first book we read by Sheldon, and now we have most of his other collections. If you like suspense, mystery and revenge, this is the book that's 'an absolute must have'.

    Absolutely THE BEST!!

After reading the other reviews I see that my opinion is in the majority! I have been a long time Sheldon fan and have re-read all of his books many times. This one is my favorite and I would just say this -- IF you love good fast moving fiction and IF you never read another book in your life -- READ THIS ONE!! I like Grisham but Sheldon far exceeds him. Only sad thing is that Sidney is past 85 now and slowing down with his writing. If you haven't already --visit his website for details of the next book and a picture.

Not sure what all the buzz is about

I am not sure what all the buzz is about with this book. I happened across the review and thought to give it a try. I couldn't wait to finish it, so that I could move on to something more plausible, with more detail, with more believable characters. At the end I was hoping that Tracy would end up back in jail. Her time in jail was the only entertaining part.
