Oddly enough the “love story” was what I disliked about this book. This is the second Morphate book, although for some reason it is not listed as such. The first book is a anthology called The Pleasure Project. I didn’t read the first book so I can’t compare the two. I loved the world that was built. The book takes place roughly 50 years in the future. There are people who were experimented on and they have been altered into immortal, super strong beings with reptilian eyes and a thirst for blood when sexually aroused. In this future all of the major US cities have fallen to ruin and are now ruled my Morphate Alphas who are whipping them into shape.
I loved the NHK team. They are smart, well equipped, resourceful, and capable soldiers. They also have a intense camaraderie and crack jokes on each other. I found myself looking forward to the interaction between team members. Liam is the typical Alpha male hero. He is a bit brooding, and why to easily distracted by a pretty face. Devon is a Morphate, Doctor, Scientist, genius, liar. Since she is a Morphate she doesn’t really need a body guard, she is stronger and more well trained in self defense than any of the people she has hired. So at first Liam has no idea that he is not technically needed for this job. I also found it annoying that Liam was under Devon’s spell as if it was some mystery. Really? She is gorgeous, with a sick body. She walks around in see through clothes, and most importantly as a Morphate she sends of intense sexual pheromones. There was no seduction here. A damn near naked woman is sashaying around smelling like sex, of course Liam had a hard on for her. The sex scenes were hot, but unlike Liam I never forgot that if she did truly get caught up in the moment she could either drain him of all his blood or rip him to shreds with her claws. Aside from great sex there was nothing between the two leads that occurred to make them fall in love. And Devon’s constant lying by omission didn’t help. This isn’t a love story. This is the story of a bodyguard breaking rule number one and screwing his client. The villain Ambrose wasn’t very developed and he came across as a psycho who was simply power hungry. Which is a shame, because the story of how the first generation of Morphates came to be is an interesting one and could have lead to deep and complex character motivations.
I won’t be waiting for the next Morphate book, if there is one. However, I did like Inez and Kellen. So if there is another book, and its about them I will most likely read it.

I love Jacquelyn Frank and I have read her other books as Jax. This book seemed a little less sexy to me then the other books she has written as Jax. However, I still enjoyed it immensely.

I am so glad that jax decided to continue the story of the morphates. She wrote about the creation of the morphates years ago in a short story/novella that was published in a book called nocturnal. It was a story that I loved back then and now I can read (and love again) about the fate of the morphates ten years later.
Jacqueline frank is my all time favorite author and I hope that she continues to revisit and expand some of my other favorite stories (especially " Drink of me").

I’m not really sure what to think about this book. I liked the world view Jax set up. I get the distinct feeling there are other books out there in this series and because of that, I think I was missing something going in. The world building, the explanation for the vampire-like Morphates was fascinating. I liked the idea of a virus that had caused the problem in the first place. The Morphates have forged their own communities, and for the most part are content to live side-by-side with the humans who understandably distrust them, given they’re faster, stronger, etc.
Devon is a very strong character, who has clearly made some errors in her past, and paid for it. Liam has his own problems. They work through them, but it felt a little rushed at times. Originally, they’re both determined to ignore the sexual pull, but then give in to it. And give in to it. And wow. Lots of sex, but that’s not always a bad thing. There was some pretty hot sex in her. Yum.
I want to know more about this world and I’ll have to look up other books by Jax/Jacquelyn Frank in the future. But, for me, this book was a 3-star. Neither spectacular nor bad, just okay. Glad I got to read it!

She has an amazing imagination to create characters and paranormal creatures as believable as hers. Really, this book has Morphates in it. They are like vampires but can change their looks and go out into the sun. Genius! Also take into consideration that she writes sex scenes that rank with the best writers. Give this book a try. You won't be sorry.
