Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Sherrilyn Kenyon's first-ever short story collection brings together never-before-published stories that previously appeared on her website as well as a shiny-new Dark-Hunter story. Titles include "Love Bytes," "A Hard Day's Night Searcher," and "Phantom Lover."

Publishers Weekly
★ 11/18/2013
Aptly named, Kenyon’s deliciously decadent collection pulls together a sampling of sometimes-sweet, often-sensual stories that will delight even the most persnickety reader. The collection opens with the beautifully emotional “House of the Rising Son,” the tale of a god’s daughter and the warrior who taught her to feel. It progresses to the age of time travel in “Shadow of the Moon,” where redemption is the key for Arcadian Angelia and Katagarian Fury. The theme binding the collection is that of second chances, whether for love (“Santa Wears Spurs”) or to right a past wrong (“Until Death We Do Part”). Wars among deities, family feuds, and fantasy fan conventions are brought together with humor and sexy spice. This well-balanced treat for Kenyon’s fans is also an excellent introduction for new readers, who will be inspired to go on an immediate hunt through her extensive backlist. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Kenyon's darkly intriguing works regularly claim the top spot on the New York Times best sellers list, and there are more than 30 million copies of her books in print. This first story collection includes pieces she has written over many years, including a few zingers —e.g., "Phantom Lover" (about V'Aiden), "A Dark-Hunter Christmas" (about Gallagher), and "Love Bytes" (about Adrian)—that have appeared only on her website. Plus, there will be a new "Dark-Hunter" story. Fans are already clamoring.

If you are a fan, nothing new here. I was hoping for a little new material. Don't look for allot of "Dark Hunter" material either. Just another book to keep author's name a float.

I expected to read something new. If you have read most of the Dark Hunter series, this book has short stories of the same books. I do not like to read what I have read before.
This book is only good for someone who has never read any of the Dark Hunter Series.

Sherrilyn Kenyon is a master story teller. When you combine a bunch of her novellas into a book you can't go wrong. Dark Bites is a fabulous example of Kenyon's writing abilities. This book high lights many of her marvelous series with this collection of short stories...making me want to delve deeper into Kenyon's highly imaginative worlds. I found Dark Bites a brilliant collection of utterly entertaining stories that left me wanting more. As a fan and avid follower of everyone of Kenyon's series, I adored this book.

I received this ARC copy of Dark Bites from St. Martin's Press in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication January 21, 2014.

Dark Bites is a great big book of Dark Hunter novellas; a fabulous treat for Kenyon fans. All these short stories are entertaining and some hotter than others but all stories are great reads.  There are twelve short stories plus a bonus scene from the Guardian.  Most of these were initially released from anthologies which I’ve listed below.

From the World of the Dark-Hunters:

-House of the Rising Son –First time in Print. A prequel to Styxx.
-Phantom Lover – This is V’Aiden and Erin’s Story and it originated from Midnight Pleasures anthology.
-Winter Born – Dante and Pandora’s Story and this novella came from Stroke of Midnight
-A Dark-Hunter Christmas –Gallagher and Simi’s Story (not romantically) originated from Dance with the Devil
-Until Death WE do Part – Velkan and Espertta originated from Love at First Bite
-A Hard Day’s Night Searcher -Rafael and Celena originated from My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding-
-Shadow of the Moon – Fury and Angelia’s story which originated from Dead After Dark
-Fear the Darkness –First time in Print. Nick Gautier
-Where Angels Fear to Thread –Zeke  originated from Blood Lite
    -Love Bytes -Unrelated Story
    -Santa Wears Spurs -Unrelated Story
-Redemption: A Bonus Scene from The Guardian -Seth & Lydia.

I enjoyed all of these shorts.   Some I’ve just read before and some are new to me.  My faves are House of the Rising Son which is a short story connected  to Styxx.  It’s actually a prologue to his book.  My next fave is Fear the Darkness.  This novella is a short glimpse of Nick after the biggest tragedy in his life.  I think Kenyon really shows how bitter he had become and you  will sympathize with him.  And last is Shadow of the Moon.  This one is Fury’s story. He meets his mate and I think this is the hottest of them all.  There’s just something about the shifters when they are mated; uncontrollable and undeniable lust and love.  Very romantic.  What I love most is that seeing any of the DH, Simi, and other members of the series. I found myself paying extra attention to make sure I don’t miss them.  Overall, Dark Bites is a good investment for Kenyon fans.

What do you do with all of the short stories written around the Hunters that have been written over the past ten plus years? You combine them all into one massive collection and call it Dark Bites and watch as her millions of fans anxiously await its release. Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the industries’ best selling authors with many of her series intertwining with one another creating a unique reading experience simply not found elsewhere.

“Because the pleasure of your company is worth the pain it causes me.”

Dark Bites is not a good starting book for those who thoroughly enjoy a phenomenal series, and I don’t say that lightly as you might find yourself quite confused and instead of enjoying Kenyon, might be persuaded not to read them. If you have an open mind it will hook you with ‘House of the Rising Son’, chapter 1, and quickly have you running out to read all of the series. I hope you have some vacation time saved up. Kenyon’s character and world building is unique and vividly draws the reader into the stories. It will play with your emotions and have you questioning the world around you. This is a must-have compilation for all Kenyon and fantasy fans!
