Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"If you don't already have one, you will crave a mad love after reading this book. I can't wait for the next installment!"--Giuliana Rancic, TV Personality & Journalist (Co-anchor on E! News and Co-host of E!’s Fashion Police

"Mad Love is the epitome of sexual delight. In a world which tends to suppress the woman's innate animal desires for the opposite sex, conversation starters like Mad Love can serve more purpose than just being a delectable (in its lightly-put darkness) read. And a delectable and naughty read it is indeed. Also, it doesn't hurt that the destination location set for this story of intrigue beckons you to head to the airport, book in hand, and jump the next overseas flight to your favorite exotic beach locale. Because, who knows... Maybe you'll meet your very own dark stranger there, too!"--Annalynne McCord, Actress (Nip/Tuck, 90210, The O.C.)

"Mad Love's powerful story not only comes to life through Colet's writing but LITERALLY shifts your soul and makes you reflect on your own journey of love and life! "--Nicky Whelan, Model & Actress (Scrubs, Workaholics and films, Hollywood & Wine and Hall Pass)

Sophie Walker just blew her entire bank account on this exotic vacation to the Maldives. She needs this time away from her controlling parents, a career she hates, and a passionless ex-boyfriend, and her best friends have vowed to help her forget all of that. However it’s Clayton Sinclair, an English stranger also vacationing on the island, who removes all thought of LA from her mind. Sophie finds herself falling fast for Clayton, eager to step into his world of passion and wealth. Has she found the man of her dreams, or is this really too good to be true?

I have mixed feelings about this book. Certain parts of it I loved. The way that the relationship between Clayton and Sophie began and progressed felt realistic, albeit not a scenario that happens all that frequently. Otherwise there would be a lot more women coming home from vacations with stories of sexy men with eyes only for them.

Sophie’s doubts about herself, her choices, and Clayton made her a three-dimensional person. She makes all of the decisions I’d want to make. Stepping away from a potential law career, a relationship that doesn’t work for her, and her family’s expectations for her life. And then she takes a risk on a handsome stranger who offers to show her the passion she’s been missing in her life. In that regard, I wished that I could trade places with her.

The biggest problem that I have with Mad Love is the fact that Clayton’s obsessive infatuation with Sophie creates an emotionally abusive relationship. There’s an attempt to minimize it by Sophie occasionally standing up to him and Clayton increasingly giving Sophie the option to choose for herself at the end of the novel. But the emotional abuse is absolutely present.

While there are many instances, the one that stuck in my mind took place in the last hundred pages. Sophie picks out a little black dress to wear to dinner with Clayton’s friends and colleagues. He thinks it’s too short and asks her to change. When they’re interrupted and she doesn’t change, he seethes throughout dinner and tries to punish her by showing off a model ex-girlfriend. That’s after he threatens to punish her for disobedience and force her change her clothes.

There are dozens of other examples. They all follow the same pattern. Sophie expresses thoughts or desires contrary to what he wants, Clayton gets angry and forces the issue until it turns out the way he wants it, and then they have a honeymoon period where everything is right in the world. A few pages later, the cycle begins again.

Yes, the writing is phenomenal and Sophie is a beautifully crafted protagonist. But the relationship isn’t healthy.

I’d recommend this book with the qualification that the reader must be aware that this relationship can be fun as a fantasy on some level, but not as a permanent lifestyle.

    Rating: 4/5

    Holy Cow!

I was really kinda dreading reading this book...kept putting other books ahead of it to read instead. This book is AMAZING! This story somewhat falls in the same genre as 50 Shades, Bared, etc. I had no idea this was a trilogy, I kept watching the pages to the end of the book thinking they had a lot of info that was going to be packed into a few pages...there are some authors that actually do that and those books are generally horrible. I can't wait for the next book...I just hope it won't be a long wait! 236 pages

I felt like I was on vacation while I read this story, in fact it really made me wish I was somewhere more exotic than sitting at home. Colet Abedi did a great job creating the sandy beaches and pristine oceans of this perfect paradise for her readers. The detail with which she wrote, pulled me onto that island and kept me soaking up the sun with her characters as we shared in their story. Sophie is a mess. She has no self-confidence and she second-guesses herself at every turn. There were times when I wanted to yell at her (thankfully other characters did it for me) but I know how natural her fears were. On the other hand, Clayton was a force. Pure and simple. He is a wealthy, alpha male who always gets his way. He has a temper and a passion that explodes around Sophie. Their chemistry will have you in desperate need of a fan. Erik and Orie, Sophie’s best friends, were my favorite characters. They were vibrant and full of life. They made me laugh and always put a smile on my face, even when things were incredibly awkward or tense. I really hope we get to know their story at some point in the future.

This story covers a lot of ground. We get to watch Sophie as she attempts to transform herself from a shy, innocent girl into a woman who knows who she is and what she wants. We see Clayton battle his need for control in order to have a chance at a relationship with the feisty and stubborn Sophie. We experience Sophie’s insecurities and fears and hope like crazy she finds a way to move past them. When their pasts both come back to stir up trouble, you can expect a crazy emotional ride. Just when you think you know where the story is going, it will surprise you. Be prepared, this book is the first book in a series and therefore the ending leaves much to be resolved.

I saw the book on netgalley and wasn't sure what to make of the cover and title.  The blurb sounded interesting so I decided to try and see if I'd like it.  I waited way too long to pick up this book.  Once I started reading, all it took was the first two chapters and I was hooked.  Sophie is on the cusp of a huge change.  She's dropped everything she doesn't want to find out what she does on a trip to the Maldives. Meeting Clayton Sinclair doesn't help; she's extremely attracted to him (I was too).  Sophie's already off balance and meeting Clayton only throws her further off kilter.

I liked Sophie a lot.  She's discovering who she is and what she wants.  She's not willing to settle.  I liked Clayton too.  He seemed to be focused solely on Sophie and good for her.  I was a bit taken aback by the insta-attraction, but understand how hard it is to look away from a person when they've captured your interest.  It was also easy to deal with since there wasn't instant consummation either.  It was very entertaining to see Sophie and Clayton deal with it during the one week Sophie gave herself to figure things out.  I haven't mentioned how amazing Sophie's friends Erik and Orie were.  They were funny, brash, and 100% on Sophie's team for everything.

It's not hard to understand why I enjoyed the book so much.  Everything was perfect, the setting, the characters, the pacing, and especially the climax.  I can't tell how eager I am to read the second book and find out what Clayton has to say for himself.  I really do wish the book had been longer, but there's not much I can do about that.

Colet has done a fantastic job on this new adult/adult novel.  It turns out she's a woman of many talents.  I'm very thankful I took a chance on Mad Love.  It gave me the perfect break I was looking for and is the perfect book to take with you to the beach.  It's 200-something pages of pure escapism, explosive chemistry, and enough drama to keep you turning the page.

(I'm buying my own copy I enjoyed this book so much!)
