Publishers Weekly
★ 07/14/2014
McMaster’s fourth Steampunk London novel (after My Lady Quicksilver) once again captivates readers with evocative and sensual imagery with exquisite descriptions of life in a lush and intoxicating alternate Victorian London. Perry Lowell was once a thrall, a human blood slave to a member of the vampiric aristocracy known as the Echelon. She escaped her captor and found safety in employment as a Nighthawk guard. A female Nighthawk is rare, but Perry insists that everyone ignore her gender. Nonetheless, Garrett Reed, her partner, finds her staggeringly attractive. When two of the Echelon’s debutantes are murdered, Perry is struck by strange recollections of her past. As more macabre discoveries are made, Perry starts to wonder whether they are connected to the horrors she suffered. McMaster outdoes herself with this strong installment. The heady romance and dark suspense keep the pages turning, and a cliffhanger finale sets the stage for book five. (Sept.)

    I Also Recommend:

Perry has been hiding from her Echelon past to keep her father s

Perry has been hiding from her Echelon past to keep her father safe from a powerful duke with a more powerful grudge. Even her closest friend and partner in the Nighthawks, Garrett, doesn’t know that she is an Earl’s daughter. Though Garrett has to wonder given how easily she played the part at the opera. That night was the first time he’d seen her as more than his partner—seen her as a woman. Now he can’t get her out of his head. But with his craving virus at dangerous levels, he doesn’t trust himself around her. Perry’s past comes knocking and now Garrett is in its crosshairs.

Ms. McMaster’s steampunk Victorian London is every bit as awesome in this book as the other two I’ve read. I love the dark, gritty feel she imparts to her world and the stakes she’s built into it with The Fade, thrall contracts, and of course class distinction. Perry and Garrett are on different sides of that line and don’t care a bit about that.

Perry can hold her own among the elite Nighthawks, is their best tracker, and regularly spars with their former Guildmaster—she’s seriously kick ass. This is no damsel in distress. Garrett is just dominant enough to be seriously sexy and he’s entirely thoughtful, the kind of guy every gal should want to be with. This pair’s chemistry is smoking, their by-play fun, and their conflict believable. I didn’t have any teeth gnashing moments—everyone behaved in understandable ways.

I especially love the villain. There’s a wicked little part of me that adores when the bad guy wants to possess the heroine. Oh, I just eat that up! And it’s great in this book.

Old series’ favorites reappear to help Perry and Garrett but it’s not necessary for a new reader to have the earlier ones under their belt to understand what’s going on (though I might not a good judge of that now since I’ve read two). For the record, this is probably my second favorite book in the series behind My Lady Quicksilver, but I’ve still got the first one to read, so we’ll see if it stays at that ranking :)

One last little gripe that’s a SPOILER:
I’m sure there is a universe-related reason why this wasn’t possible, but I was disappointed Perry didn’t get to become a duchess. She owned the villain and totally deserves a spot on that Council.
Forged by Desire is a wonderful paranormal steampunk adventure i

Forged by Desire is a wonderful paranormal steampunk adventure in the dark and mysterious world of McMaster's imagination.

This time around we are following the Nighthawks, Garret and Perry. Perry is one of the few female blue bloods with a past entrenched in secrets.

Garret has recently been put unofficially in charge of the Nighthawks. He is dealing with the stress of the offices as well as the newly awakened feelings his near fatal injury and Perry's care has brought to the forefront.

Perry has secretly been in love with Garret since the day they met. She has carefully kept her feelings bottled up but with one unexpected kiss her bottle was broken.

There is a serial killer on the loose and the more Perry investigates the more she realizes it mirrors her past and her creation into a blue blood. If she tells her suspicions it will expose her past and the life she left behind.

The story is fast paced and action intense with lots of romantic tension but still has plenty dark mystery boggled with the who's and what ifs.

I have immensely enjoyed every story I've read from Bec McMaster. Forge by Desire is definitely to be counted in that list of fabulous reads.

I love how McMaster ties her past characters with her current storylines, cementing the bond between this story and the series. I can't wait to see where we will be taken next.

Forged by Desire, Bec McMaster. Review from jeannie zelos book

    Forged by Desire, Bec McMaster.
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
So, steampunk? Not really my thing, I though...til I received one I hadn't realised was in that genre and loved it. Since then I've found some I've loved and some that were mostly over my head. This one was perfect, the right blend of romance and adventure, along with some fabulous paranormal aspects.
Steampunk seems to me as if in “our” world just when the age of industrialisation came in a different turn was taken, and science followed a path based around steam, with engines replacing horses and a huge development on artificial body parts and integration. Fascinating in a way to think maybe that could have happened..
Anyway, this is book two, I'd not read book one but its easy to follow. Perry – what a woman, fierce and independent, one of the few lady blue bloods and a top Nighthawk. She's loved Garret, her Nighthawk partner, for most of the past nine years, but kept it secret. That's not all she's hiding and now her past is coming back to haunt her, and bring her into terrible danger. After their last mission Garret looks at Perry differently. She's always been his valued colleague and partner, one of the lads, and yet when they needed to dress up to infiltrate a society function he saw her in a very different light, dressed up in current ladies fashions and being all woman...now he can't get her out of his head and doesn't know what to do. Both think the other doesn't reciprocate their feelings..add in that Garret has just been promoted to leader of the Nighthawks, he's having troubles over his blood control after nearly dying recently – but can't tell anyone- and that there is a serial killer on the loose and things are tough all round. He may have confided in Perry before their recent encounter, but now has no-one. Perry can't belive her past has come forward, thinks possibly it's connected to the murders but can't tell anyone – she may have confided in Garret before things changed but now....
So we've a whole slew of problems that weave together seamlessly into a tale that has suspense and romance – just what I enjoy most. I really liked this novel, the characters were great, I felt I knew them, and the story that unfolds was very cleverly done to tie in so many oddments and provide some answers. I love the meld of history with fantasy – makes me wonder “what if”...and its written in a way that doesn't insult the readers intelliengence as some do – a quality read.
Stars: Four and a half, great read.
