This book hints at deep waters in Tansy......but until page 127 or thereabouts she was truly the most boring person on earth. It took me a week to get that far in the book. Even then all the insight we get is that she lost her family and keeps people at a distance. Ian is a much more interesting character...but i say this based on other books not this one. Would that Julie Ann Long had taken this opportunity to flesh out Ian. My favorite in the serues is what i dud fir a duke...although i love Chase too. Chases story has a lot of silliness in it however.

I could not wait for this book to come out because I already read Julie Ann Long's other Pennyroyal Green books
and I enjoyed them all very much. This book was a big disappointment. I found it boring. There wasn't anything about it that made you want to keep on reading to find out what happens next.

I have read other books in this series and liked them, but in this book everyone is a simple shell of a person. No real angst, drama or even plot. The main characters are shallow, self-centered people who I found annoying at best. The supporting charters were described in the same way as in each of Long's other books and offered nothing to the story. Read Long's What I did for a Duke and skip this one.

I have read all the Pennyroyal stories and lived all if them. I didn't like Tansy at first. But she matured and redeemed herself. Loved Ian. He was perfect and a lost soul who found out love of a certain person can be all a person really needs in life to be happy.

I thought the author did a great job with this story concept. Two shallow, self-centered people meet. Despite failing to click initially, circumstances force them to keep interacting and they begin to recognize each other's hidden qualities and motivations. In the process, they fall in love.

Tansy an American heiress has just arrived in England. She is out to find a husband and work through loosing her family. She is a beautiful charming woman who captures many hearts and is set to make a great marriage. She could have many but she only wants one. Ian Eversea can have many women but he never wants to settle down. He is a war veteran with big plans to travel the world. He sees more to Tansy than she sows in public and he is bound to reveal her true character. Only problem is as he finds out more abut her the more he is determined to have her in bed. But will a few nights passion be enough to rethink settling down.
Tansy is an unusual woman as she talks to flowers, has a list of what she wants her future husband to be like and a few other vices. She likes being the center of attention but tries to act like it is all new to her. She carries her pain close and uses a front to hide behind. Ian is a womanizer and not ashamed of it. He is the black sheep of the family and they try to hide him at times. He had a hard time in the war and it gives him nightmares. He watches and is very observant as well as sexy.
At first I wasn't sure how much I would like Tansy. She seemed self centered but as the story grew like Ian I saw more to her. I really liked Ian from the start. There is something about a rogue that just pulls you in. The author does a great job in writing this book as I cud see things clearly in my head. The time period, clothing and actions all come across very well. Beside Ian and Tansy I enjoyed the other characters as well. They make you want to know more about them as well. I loved seeing how much Ian changes and his reaction a few times. He and Tansy both learn to open up with each other and they both learn to let go f some of their pain. If you like historical romance I would recommend this one as it is hot at times and wonderful all the time.

Julie Anne Long has done it again. In this edition of her Pennyroyal Green Series we meet "Tansy" and Ian Eversea. The notorious rogue has done it again, this time he's falling for someone he shouldn't, his brother in law the Duke of Falconbridge's ward, Titiana aka Tansy. Their wittiness, sarcasm, laughter, and passion makes this book hard to put down. A devilishly good read, and a wonderful ending for more than the hero and heroine. You will love this book!

First, I want to say that Ms. Long is a very popular and accomplished author. I have read other work by her before and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that was not the case with “Between the Devil and Ian Eversea (Pennyroyal Green #9). The story began interestingly enough. Titania "Tansy" Danforth is an American heiress. She is orphaned and travels to England so that her guardian can find her a husband. Ok, so far… Then we meet and get to know the actual heroine. Apparently she is so beautiful men go insane at the sight of her. Helen of Troy has nothing on “Tansy”. Men just become so enamored with her that they take leave of their senses. This I took with an eye-roll… Ok, moving along… We meet our hero- Ian Eversea. Tansy is IMMEDIATELY captivated with Ian. She finds him physically attractive but he doesn’t seem to fall all over himself and become a bumbling idiot like ALL the other men she encounters. (At this point, I’m done with the eye rolls and now taking deep breaths is the hope that I can finish this story).
Because Ian is not interested in Tansy (or he is interested in her just not a blithering fool) She is even more captivated. How can he not fall for her graces? Every other man has…? At this point I start to laugh at the absurdity of these characters and laugh at the nonsensicalness of it ALL. The supporting characters were equally as superficial and just incomprehensible. Genevieve, Ian’s sister, another great beauty. She too could give Helen of Troy a run for her money. Genevieve is shadowed by Tansy. All the attention went to Tansy and not to HER beauty. So this part had me laughing. Genevieve is also a tremendous beauty but not as beautiful. (Apparently only beautiful people make an appearance in this book.) The ugly people just don’t exist.
Ian Eversea kept the story going. He was not the typical English gentleman. He has seen the horrors of war and isn’t the usual type of man. He works with his hands and breaks a sweat. Ian is supposed to be very scandalous, in fact, the most scandalous thing he does is he calls Tansy “Tit-sy”. (That was the extent of his scandal). I actually thought Ian was a great guy, he was just not shallow, which seemed to be the driving force behind many of the characters. Even Olivia and Genevieve are very catty and superficial. Olivia doesn’t like Tansy because… she is a woman? As the story progressed Ian and Tansy get to know each other better and put aside their perceptions about one another. Unfortunately, I never felt a big connection between Ian and Tansy, other than their attraction for each other. The story, overall, repeated itself. Ian doesn’t want to like Tansy, Tansy has a number of admirers, she can’t figure out why Ian isn’t one of them, she counts her success by the amount of flowers she receives. Overall, not my kind of story.

I am a big fan of Long's. I am transported by Ian's story. Wounded charm. This book is witty and charming while being delightfully sensual. But I am most captured by the powerful hidden vulnerability of both Tansy and Ian. Nice work, Julia. Worth waiting for.

Between Devil and Ian Eversea is a delightful story of a devil/angle heroine who is a perfect match for Ian. I was so excited that the story start with two of my favorite charactres of Pennyroyal Green series , Genevieve and the duke of Falconbridge.The story is so fun and delightful keep me laughing through out the story. Tansy is one of those heroine that keep you guessing if she is a devil or sweet angle and I really like the way Ian behaved around her. It is another great book by Mrs. Julie Anne Long I can't wait to read her next one in the series I hope It will be Olivia and Lyon. Thank you Mrs. Julie Anne Long

What I got was a compelling romance that took its time bringing the protagonists together as well as giving us a heroine difficult to warm up to but who I still liked despite her superficiality. The romance felt more real as both Ian and Tansy had to discover who the other ACTUALLY was before falling in love in a slow journey to HEA.
Tansy's on her own after the deaths of her parents and brother and being sent to England is a big change that she adapts to in the only way she knows how, by putting on a facade. She claims to be a wallflower but flirts beautifully and shamelessly. She gauges her worth by the amount of attention she gets which puts her at odds with the other female characters. When she's alone though she shows a more caring side, a side more real with less artificiality. She does little acts that promote remembrance which reminds us of her loss and makes her more human. The only person to ruin her act is Ian. She's attracted to him and hates herself for the cracks in her facade that show when in his presence. She's drawn to the man he is behind the facade he too portrays and sees a man she can count on to accept her completely.
Ian's always been seen as a rogue and he's lived his life accordingly with his numerous women and over the top lifestyle. He sees Tansy as immature and bland at first but becomes drawn to the human side he sneaks glimpses of across the balcony. He's at once exasperated as well as desiring to dig deeper into her soul. For the first time he sees a woman much like himself in dealing with the pain of their pasts and he wants to claim her.
This story was rather slow-paced. The romance took the time to flourish with witty banter being the majority of their early interactions. I felt that Tansy evolved more completely than Ian but still enjoyed them as a couple in their mutual dealings with grief and guilt. This story felt like it tried to do too much at times with Tansy and Ian's story as well as furthering Olivia's storyline. For so long she's been hiding behind a wall of coldness but her battles with Tansy over attention brought her to life and promise an intriguing story of her own. On a whole this was a pleasant read but not of the caliber of my favorites, Loraine Heath and Julia Quinn. I definitely recommend her works though and will read more from her in the future!

Tansy was a good heroine. At first, I found her to be rather shallow, vain, and selfish. She seemed to thrive on the attention of others and was unable to stand even one man not being enchanted by her. But, as the book went on and we got a deeper look into her character and learned why she acted the way she did. She was really a likable character. So, while she wasn't my favorite heroine, I was fine with her.
Ian was wonderful. He was very loyal to his loved ones, particularly his family, protective, and the type of man to feel deeply. He could be a bit of an ass at times, but he could also be sweet when he wanted to be. I really liked him.
The romance was good. Tansy and Ian were sweet together. I loved how they were the type of couple that understood each other implicitly. And, the chemistry between them was there from the moment they met, even though they were both reluctant to act on it. I thought they were a lovely couple.
I really had one main issue with the book. At first, I thought it was Tansy and her vanity. But, then I realized that I didn't really mind the vanity, though it did annoy me. It was the way people (mainly men) reacted to her. It was really exaggerated, to the point that I wanted to roll my eyes several times. If I had to read about another man with "wide eyes" or a "dazed expression" or a "gaping mouth" or the many other things to that vein one more time....or the worst of all. The several taken men that said "oh, I love my wife/fiance/the woman I'm courting but just look at her," again with that "dazed expression." Seriously. And that happened more than once. It made me look down on those men and on Tansy for very clearly encouraging them without realizing how she was hurting the other woman (who didn't like her very much). It wasn't a deal breaker for the book, but it was a frustrating issue that affected by enjoyment of the book. However, I still ended up liking the book as a whole.
The plot was fast paced and I was kept interested the entire way through. Despite any issues I had, I enjoyed the story and I thought the ending was lovely.
Between the Devil and Ian Eversea was a lovely historical romance. It wasn't perfect, but I definitely enjoyed it and I ended up quite liking it. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

A truly fun and funny story, we find a young wealthy, witty and beautiful American returned to her birthplace to seek a husband under the guidance of her late father’s friend the Duke of Falconbridge. Titania (Tansy) Danforth appears to be everything that a young noble would desire: beautiful, charming and witty. Unlike many of her station, her guardian is entertaining her ‘list’ of qualities that she wants in a husband, a list that starts to grow and change as Tansy herself begins to realize her own true desires.
Early on, all of Tansy’s interactions are superficial and seem calculated: no one finds her more calculating or wanting than Ian Eversea. The combination of his striking looks and near sardonic approach to her every utterance leave Tansy tongue-tied and dull, he completely shatters her confidence while determining to have nothing to do with her. His plan is to leave Pennyroyal Green for the adventures of the sea, without a wife of the peculiar encumbrance of a woman who needs too much of him.
Everyone, to Ian’s dismay, seems to be falling under Tansy’s spell; with the exception of his favored sister Olivia. In fact, Ian is almost going out of his way to discomfit the young woman: all the while discounting any interest in her. But he is always watching, and sees glimpses of the young woman that is hiding behind the babbling idiot in his presence.
I rather enjoyed Tansy from the start: trying to fit in and make the most of her opportunities, yet slightly guarded: her entire life is in uproar and changed dramatically, with severe restrictions to the freedoms that she knew back in America as she settled her parents’ estate.
Ian was a bit more difficult: Tansy tried his patience and despite not wanting her to affect him, somehow he can’t stop it. And yet, his own fears deeply rooted in the people that he loved and lost during his time at war have him unwilling to risk involvement with anyone: no promises, no gifts, no future.
Together the interactions between Ian and Tansy are delightful: her willingness to ask questions that no young woman should ever ask, and his peculiar approach to answering the questions and teaching her a lesson have rather the opposite effect on them both. Like a moth to a flame, Tansy is drawn to him, dreams of him and even changes her list of requirements for a husband based on her reactions to him.
Although this was the first of the Pennyroyal Green series that I have read, I had no difficulty in understanding the relationships between the secondary characters in this story, and found the whole group of them quite intriguing; I will be reading the other titles in this series. The romance between Ian and Tansy is delightful, you can’t NOT cheer for her daring and determination in finding what it is about Ian that intrigues her, and his steady determination to deflect her emotions.
