I have yet to read the entire 'Dark' series, but after reading 4 or 5 books from it, I have to say Dark Desire has to be one of the top two of the series!! I recommend anyone thinking of reading this book to first read Dark Prince. I don't believe I would have truly understood the character of Jacques had I not done so. Dark Prince gives the reader a slight glimpse of the innocent boy Jacques was before his torment and Dark Desire gives you the story of the man he became and what he overcome. From the first chapter of this book I was consumed until the very end. It was unlike any other in the series I have read. I was saddened by the torture and sorrow Jacques suffered and felt the hatred myself for the people that did that to him. The first chapter of the book is heartbreaking but seeing what Jacques endured help to understand his reactions and emotions in dealing with his lifemate and his family and friends. It is obvious the writer was dearly attached to this character. Out of all her characters in the 'Dark Series', I feel I knew the characters of Jacques and Shea more intimately than any other. The detail in which this book was written is astounding and at the same time heartwrenching. It is a great read for anyone searching for a great love story filled with hurdles and triumphs!

After having read the Sookie novels and twilight, the Carpathian/Dark Series provided an "old school" vampire story. It was very remniscent of scenery in Stoker's Dracula. I found the first book dark prince enjoyable, but this book was VERY, VERY enjoyable. The story of Jacques is one I could read over and over again. You begin the book struggling to understand him, almost loathing him. But in the end you find yourself rooting for him. This book starts off fast and doesn't skip a beat. Love it! Love it! Love it!

The best description and summary of Dark Desire is found in its preface: 'Dark Desire was first titled Dark Madness. I think the original title described the way I felt when I wrote this particular book.' And it is madness. Jacques stops short of insane his mind is twisted and scarred, not by evil, but by mental and physical agony. For years he has been sealed within a tomb, prisoner, tortured upon each awakening by hunger and pain. He cries out for help, but no one answers his plea. All he can do is bide his time, planning his revenge against those that captured him and those that would not come to his rescue. By far, this is the best Carpathian novel Feehan has written to date. I love this book!

This is a great follow-up to Dark Prince. Jacques has suffered greatly due to Carpathian hunters. We see the impact being harmed has had on Jacques, brother of Mikhail. Shea has come from afar only to be confused and disturbed by what she seems to be. Can these two wounded souls come together in order to heal themselves and each other? Obviously, it is a romance novel...but it has strong characters, emotions, and plot. The entire Dark series will captivate any reader and engage them to read more. It is also lovely to see previous and future characters from this wonderful, enthralling series.

I wouldn't want to be criticizing a writer since I myself do not even come close to professional writing. I hold great respect for writers. However, this particular book is way too repetitive. While reading I felt as if Christine Feehan were 'going in circles' (in terms of constantly repeating the same words, phrases, and even situations within this story). I was utterly bored reading this book. The story seems dull. In the first half of the book basically nothing happens. Although I realize it is a sort of a fictional and paranormal story, it seems way too fantastic and the characters are not very believable / credulous. I wish this author didn't have to repeat the same words and phrases over and over again. Such excessive repetition only makes the story look worse than it could have actually been. And as I have mentioned above - utterly boring. Very disappointed. P.S. Here are some examples of repetition: endless assertions of Jacques of how Shea is over and over his 'lifemate;' how small Shea's body is; Feehan had to repeat hundreds of times that Shea had red silky hair (as if once wasn't enough); the word 'clenched;' etc.

I have read a great deal of the Carpathian novels, and this one is still my most highly remembered favorite. Jaques and Shea are a very likeable couple. Some parts seem rather overly sentimental and repetitious, but it is, all in all, a very sweetly-told romance.

A series that takes one out of the mundane world and allows one's immagination to wander. Christine Feehan is a wonderful author.

Jaques is the younger brother to Mikhail. When Shea a young doctor finds him she discovers he's been horribly totured worse he has no memory of who he is. Shea is determined to help him. But soon she gets caught up in his own world a world she doesn't know if she can handle.

I have read all of the Dark series, so far this is still my favorite, though I've read all of them over and over. I will continue to await future installments and pray she re-writes the one her grand daughter accidentally deleted.

This series it really good. If you read the books out of order like I did, you will love finding out about characters like Jacques.

Great read but the female caracter was disapointing compared to some of the others in many of the authors other stories. I love her books no matter what though.

I'm not sure why anyone would give this book more than 1 or 2 stars. I found it to be a very few pages of weak plot and undeveloped characters, buried in pages and pages of mind-numbingly repetitive over-dramatic drawn-out sex scenes.
I bought both the first and second books in the series, hoping the author would find her sea legs, so to speak, with the second book, but no -- if you remove the excessive sex scenes and combine the two books, you might have enough pages for a passable short story. I won't be buying any more of Ms. Feehan' s books, as I suspect the third time would NOT be the charm.

I had almost every other book in this series but had missed the 2nd book, Dark Desire. It was great to finally read their story and learn how they came together. I will probably read it again at some future date.

I've read and have reread all of Ms. Feehan's books and I love them all. I really enjoy Jacques and Shea's story because it's not all roses and wine. Even perfect immortals have bad things happen to them. I know you'll enjoy reading this book so prepare to be wowed!
