THE LEGEND OF THE HIGHLAND GUARD CONTINUES. . . .

Handpicked by Robert the Bruce to help him in his quest to free Scotland from English rule, the elite warriors of the Highland Guard face their darkest days. When Bruce is forced to flee, his bid for freedom rests on the shoulders of one extraordinary warrior.

Erik MacSorley is a brilliant seafarer who has never encountered a wind he could not harness or a woman he could not win—until he drags a wet, half-naked “nursemaid” out of the waters off the Irish coast. Ellie’s ordinary appearance belies the truth: She is in fact Lady Elyne de Burgh, the spirited daughter of the most powerful noble in Ireland.

Worse, this irresistible woman is determined to prove herself immune to Erik’s charms—a challenge he cannot resist.
Her captor may look every inch a rugged warrior, but Ellie vows that it will take more than a wickedly suggestive caress to impress her. Yet Erik will sweep away Ellie’s resistance with a desire that resonates deep within her heart. Still, he is a man driven by loyalty, and she is a woman with secrets that could jeopardize Bruce’s chance to reclaim his throne. As the battle for king and country sounds across the shores, will Ellie’s love be enough to finally tame the legend known as the Hawk?

Meet the Author

Monica McCarty is the bestselling author of The Chief, the first book in the Highland Guard series, the Highlander trilogy (Highlander Untamed, Highlander Unmasked, and Highlander Unchained), and the Campbell trilogy (Highland Warrior, Highland Outlaw, and Highland Scoundrel). Her interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After a short but enjoyable stint as an attorney, she realized that her career as a lawyer set against her husband’s transitory life as a professional baseball player was not exactly a match made in heaven. So she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. Monica McCarty lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two children.

Can't get enough of these Highlanders!

Erik "Hawk" MacSorley is a the best seaman and swimmer in the elite Highland Guards. He is commissioned by Robert Bruce to meet with Irish mercenaries to get them to agree to be part of an attack Bruce has planned to regain his throne. The same February night Hawk is to meet with the Irish, Lady Elyn (Ellie) deBurgh has agreed to go along with her sister, Mathilda (Matty) to the Maiden's Plunge into the icy waters off the Irish coast. Hawk is handsome, with his blonde hair, blue eyes and charming smile. He has always had a way with the ladies. His men are loyal to him. Ellie is the 'plain'(her eyes are hazel and her hair dark compared to the blue-eyed blonde features of her siblings) and responsible member of her family. She has been the mother figure to her younger brothers and sister since the death of their mother a few years earlier. She is engaged to marry Sir Ralph deMonthermer, former son-in-law to the English King, Edward I, known as The Hammer of the Scots. Ellie inadvertantly swims into the cave where Hawk and the mercenaries are meeting. Rather than let the Irish kill her, Hawk kidnaps her not knowing she is the daughter of the Earl of Ulster since she lets him assume she is merely a nursemaid to the deBurgh children. And Hawk lets her assume he is merely a pirate and an outlaw. When one member of his group, Thomas Randolph who is also the nephew of Robert Bruce, becomes ill, Hawk takes them to a small island off Kintyre to give Thomas time to recover and to keep Ellie hidden. Ellie is bold and asks a lot of questions. Most of her questions are guesses but she seems to hit the mark with those guesses. Eventually, they come to trust each other; but not enough to tell the truth about their names and statuses. I love the way Monica McCarty blends fact with fiction in this series. These characters are real people in history, her story is the fiction. Robert Bruce is married to Elizabeth deBurgh, Ellie's older sister. At one point, the ladies who are part of the Scottish Queen's entourage are captured by the English and placed in cages at Berwick and Roxburgh Castles. Eventually most of the ladies were freed

    Could not put it Down!

Great book! I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I loved the hero in this book. So carefree and loveable. I love all her books and wait for each on to be completed so I can rush to a book store to read them. I absolutely love historical romance. I wish all the romance authors would stop writting all that demon and shape shifter stuff. Stick with the real deal. Real hero's, not half demons who are immortal by the way.
    Can't wait for The Ranger!

    Love this series

Great suspense, not the run of the mill highlander romance. Love the use of real historical figures and battles. After reading The Chief, I couldn't wait for this book and now I will anxiously wait for the next.

I am loving all these Highland Guards but Hawk is my favorite so

I am loving all these Highland Guards but Hawk is my favorite so far. This story starts out three months after Robert Bruce is crowned King of Scotland at Scone Abbey. King Edward has squashed the rebellion and the Pope has excommunicated the Bruce for murdering his rival who turned on him. Many have refused to follow the Bruce and ten warriors, his secret Guard, are what stands between his failure and his life. Kind Edward is showing no mercy and these warriors will risk everything for the freedom of Scotland.

Eric "Hawk" MacSorley is chosen because of his excellent swimming abilities and his sailing skills plus the fact the man knows no fear. He is also a magnificent specimen of a man, in my opinion.

Ellie is the daughter of the Earl of Ulster. She's betrothed to a man that she has no connection with but realizes her sister and the man have a chemistry. Ellie has taken her siblings under her wing after her mother's death and her sister, Mattie, tells her she has became dull and boring, that she isn't happy-go-lucky like she used to be so challenges Ellie to join in some festivities that involve swimming in the freezing waters.

While she's swimming she goes to a cave where she is found by some mercenaries. They believe she has overheard their conversation and attempt to take her and kill her. Hawk saves her by telling the mercenaries that he will dispose of her after they have their "fun" with her. That way there isn't a body to be found had the mercenaries killed her.

The last thing either want is to want the other. She has no interest in him and she isn't what he normally looks for in a woman. They both feel this tingling shock when they touch. She finds him entrancing but looks down her nose at him. All he sees is this waif but there's something that draws him to her. It is driving him crazy that she is immune to his smiles and banter.

He thinks she is nursemaid to The Earl of Ulster and when he finds out who she is he understands the risk he has put the Bruce's mission in by keeping her with him. He takes her back home and almost gets himself captured until she tells him to "go" and she lies for him giving him time to escape.

I felt such heartache for them as they try to find their HPE. This story is one of danger, death, fight for life, learning to let go, and finding an honest and pure love with one of the most amazing love scenes I've ever read.

Monica McCarty is definitely an auto buy for me!

    Love it.

Second book in the series and does not disappoint.

I love, love, love hawk and his easy going nature. Ellie is the opposite. Always serious. But oh how I love how they interact with each other. How they fell in love is very believable.

Great characters, a tight plot, an atmospheric historical setting, and of course, well written by Ms. McCarty, which makes this book a must to read. I really liked the time period and the story which was set in the Highlands.

    Definately a great read!

I LOVED this book, really, this series so far. McCarty does such a great job at weaving a fun and very exciting story with these warriors! The love scenes are awesome and leave you with wanting more! It isn't your same 'ole predictable "love" story. It was such a fun and great read! The first in the series is "The Chief"...definately start with that one and then you won't be able to stop!

I love highlander stories. And I loved Erik and Ellie. But the story could have been told easily in 300 pages. Way longer than it needed to be for a romance. I love historicals and some history in them. Way too much in this one. It is still supposed to be a romance read. Besides that I loved Erik, Hawk. And he is perfect for Ellie. Too bad there wasnt more story for Ralph and Matty. Kind of sorry we missed that. Over all, for this story alone, a very low 4 stars. But I will continue on with the series. I love how future and past guards play a part. Hopefully, they will play bigger parts in the future. Arrow is one i am looking forward to. :-)
