First in a stunning new post-apocalyptic paranormal romance trilogy.
Growing up with an unstable, often absent father who preached about the end of the world, Jenna never thought in her wildest nightmares that his predictions would come true. Or that he would have a plan in place to save her-one that includes the strong, stoic man who kidnaps and takes her to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.
The mysterious ex-Marine named Mason owes a life-debt to Jenna's father. Skilled and steadfast, he's ready for the prophesied Change, but Jenna proves tough to convince. Until the power grid collapses and mutant dogs attack-vicious things that reek of nature gone wrong.
When five strangers appear, desperate to escape the bloodthirsty packs, Jenna defies her protector and rescues them. As technology fails and the old world falls away, Jenna changes too, forever altered by supernatural forces. To fight for their future, she and Mason must learn to trust their instinctive passion-a flame that will see them through the bitter winter, the endless nights, and the violence of a new Dark Age.

If you've followed the Skin books by Ava Gray AKA Ann Aguirre, then you know half of this author, Ellen Connor, is Ann Aguirre, and therein lies the wonderful writing. The survival situation these two characters find themselves in is such a challenge, and the monster dogs raise it up a notch as well. But all these things happening do not overwhelm the "romance" found in this book--weird, huh. Jenna and John. John and Jenna. When these two look at each other, you can feel the heat and the vulnerability between them. I soo loved this book. I highly recommend Nightfall, and can't wait for Book 2 of 3.

Some claimed the End of Days Rapture had begun; while others insisted nuclear meltdowns and WMDs as the causes.
Her late dad predicted the end of days as the demise of technology followed by the Change, but Jenna Barclay thought her father was a survivalist lunatic. In Oregon the grid still works, but for how much longer? Former Marine John Mason owes a life debt to Jenna's late father and pays the first installment by kidnapping his deceased guru's daughter to take her to safety in the remote wild just before the magical change begins. Jenna thinks her abductor is as crazy as her dad was until mutant dogs attack them followed by meeting three adults and two children fleeing violent inhuman predators. Neither Jenna nor John is prepared for the Change that comes to them.
The first Dark Age Dawning thriller starts off as a science fiction collapse of civilization but deftly switches into a post-apocalyptic survivor fantasy reminiscent of Sterling E. Lanier's Hiero's Journey. The story line is fast-paced from the moment John takes Jenna to the cabin her father prepared for her. Aptly titled as Nightfall has fallen putting out the lights of civilization though pockets of packs change yet retain the essence of what is human in the new lethal world.

I was hooked by the end of the first page. The author creates a very real scary place that has you on the edge of your seat. With a perfect blend of suspence, intrigue, and romance this book hits a perfect five stars. Will definately be reading more of her in the future.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 *

What a world! I have never read about a more captivating world than the one built in this novel. Granted, I’ve never read a post-apocalyptic book before, but I’ve read my fair share of paranormals. Some of the things that happen in this book shocked me. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started this, but it sure wasn’t what I got. The ride was so worth it, though.
The story begins with the heroine, Jenna, being kidnapped by the hero, Mason, because he promised Jenna’s father that he’d make sure she survived the apocalypse. Like any normal person, Jenna didn’t believe him, but she wanted to sooth the crazy, so she tried to do whatever she could to talk him out of kidnapping her. Too bad it didn’t work. She ends up locked in a cabin in the middle of nowhere while technology begins to fail, and magic begins to infect the human population. Only then, after witnessing Mason fight off a couple of human-morphed hellhounds, does she believe.
This book was very pleasantly surprising. I was trying to figure out how the author was going to spin a love story into the midst of an apocalypse. By the end of the book, it ended up working out, but for the beginning half I found it hard to get behind the developing relationship. Mason was too shut off from emotion. Normally I dig the whole ‘I’m-scarred-I-detach-myself-to-protect-myself’ persona, but there was something about Mason that was too detached. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but because of it, I found it hard to believe their budding romance.
Jenna in the beginning was a little bit all over the place. It was like she couldn’t make up her mind over what to do or how to feel about Mason and the events around her. I know it’d be difficult to adjust to for anyone, I mean, the world is chaotically ending! But she seemed almost bipolar about it. “He’s crazy. – He’s rational. – He’s hot. –He’s a jerk. –He’s kinda sweet. –He’s so cold.” I almost wanted to tell her to make up her mind.
However, despite these things, it didn’t take away from the story at all. The supporting characters were really well done. I found myself really pulling for them when they moved from the cabin to a building further in the city being chased and hunted by human-mutated hellhounds. The action had enough flavor to keep the book quite interesting. It also was interesting how halfway through the book, Jenna and Mason go through a kind of role reversal. He suddenly has all these feelings for her, and she wants to make sure the mission is accomplished. It was like she was softening him up at the same time he was hardening her because of the danger. Of course, this ‘colder’ Jenna disappears soon after and they both become lovey dovey people.
I was expecting some really hot stuff because, when I’m on the biggest adrenaline rush ever cause the world is overrun with homicidal hellhounds, I want some hot raunchy loving. Unfortunately, that didn't really happen. It was hot, but it lacked the steam that goes with it. I felt like Jenna wasn’t the type of woman to like what Mason was offering. I’m not sure, but it really didn’t click with me. It felt a little rushed, but by the end of the book, I was convinced the relationship was real. It just needed a bit more of a spark.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable read. It’s definitely worth checking out, if only for the world building. I would recommend it simply for that. I know I’ll be checking out the next one.

I love it when I find a new author that is awesome! This book gives a new twist to the paranormal suspense. Love the characters, I love that I could picture this so well while reading, has a walking dead or falling skies feel but in book form. Totally worth the money! Reading the next book in the trilogy asap!

I'm a little bit heart broken that it's only a trillogy. Once you get hooked on this first book you won't want it to end. The world created here is complex and original and the writting style makes it easy to find yourself dropped into the center of it as if you were witnessing it all with your own eyes. The story is well paced with a perfect balance of action, character development, dialogue and prose. This is certainly an adult novel with both graphic violence and explicit sex but while things do get hot the sex doesn't overshadow the plot or the character development. The focus remains on the story and the emotion and growth that the characters are going through. I really enjoy apocolypic storylines but am frequently disappointed when it's difficult to connect to the characters because the whole focus of the book seems to be on explaining the rules of this new world the author has created. That was not the case here. I was absolutely engaged in the characters and loved the environment and adventure of the story as well. I highly recommend it!! Beware, after reading this one you'll want to get the other two as well!!

While it took me a chapter to get into this book, it was worth it. The story is based on a post-apocalyptic world where creatures rule and humans are forced to adapt or perish. The story follows two main characters and their interaction with a handful of other survivors. The steam factor was simmering in the background(not over boiling) and the actual story takes precedent over the love scenes. If you like action with a side dish of romance, this book is for you.
