Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Sallie and Rhy clash fiercely over old hurts and current goals when Rhy buys the magazine at which Sallie is a top reporter in this very early romance from one of today's top romantic suspense authors. First published in 1982 as a Silhouette Special Edition, this story is dated and features protagonists and behaviors somewhat out of sync with current tastes and expectations. Still, it is a fine example of the contemporary series romances of the times, and fans of both Howard and the genre will be interested.

    REPRINTING HURTS

THIS IS A REPRINTING FROM HER EARLY DAYS, BEFORE SHE FOUND HER PERFECT FIT. IF YOU NOTICE, THE BOOK 'TEARS OF THE RENEGADE' IS SOMEWHAT LIKE THIS BOOK. GOOD WRITERS ARE'NT BORN, THEY ARE MADE.

    Where is her independence?

I love everything Linda Howard has ever written with 1 exception - this book. This type of drivel makes Barbara Cartland seem politically correct! The characters are completely 1 dimensional with no growth. I have enjoyed all her other books. Maybe this book was an experiment.

Not her best by a long shot

Ok, everyone knows Linda Howard is great. She is by far in my top three of favorite authors. It is unbelievable that this even came from her. Rhy is unbelievable and sounds like he needed a swift kick. Sallie is weak and wavering. Geez, I had trouble stomaching both of these characters. Write something about Chris (other reporter)..hey, I liked him! Please do not let book disuade you to any of her other work. She is an excellent writer with GREAT stories. This is just not one of them.

    anti-woman drivel

I agree with the others. The book description said that a woman re-invents herself after her husband leaves and then he ends up back in her life. Great, I thought; I'm all for independent women. What the description fails to say is that she lets him walk all over her, tell her what to do, force her out of her job and off the career path she loves, force her to move in with him and all of this is when he's not physically grabbing her. This is apparently all ok though since she loves him and the sex is great. Unfortunately, this was my first Linda Howard book, and it will be my last.

    Who's Independent here??

I agree with ALL of these opinions. The book is called Independent Wife but the main character is anything but. This book actually made me angry. Rhy walks out on Sallie for seven years and as soon as he wants her back she not only gives up her career but she takes him??? What is going on here? I hated this book and thats saying something because I usually love Linda Howard.

    I didn't believe it but...

As an avid Linda Howard fan, and a B&N regular, I avoided this book because of the bad press given by a reviewer. Finally, I figured 'hey, it's just one opinion', and bought the book. What a mistake. This is the first disappointment I have had with her books (and I've read almost all of them). The story line was ok, but the characters were unreal and the wife was hardly 'independent'.

There is nothing independent about her!

I just finshed reading the book because I wanted to know how bad could it get toward the end! It got pretty bad! Well its Linda Howards older books so that just says it would not be as good has her most recent books. -_-
