Reliable western romance author Brown (the Spikes and Spurs series) gives her new series a strong start with this sweet contemporary story. Sparks fly when Loretta Bailey is in the same room with her ex-husband, Jackson, even 17 years after she dumped him for cheating and moved to Oklahoma. When their daughter, Nona, announces she’s dropping out of college to marry one of Jackson’s hired hands, Loretta returns to Texas, determined to set her daughter back on the right track. From the second that Loretta arrives at Lonesome Canyon Ranch, she is swamped with memories and surrounded by friends thrilled that she has come “home.” Jackson knows he screwed up all those years ago and wants a fresh start, but Loretta is, understandably, wary. The canyon is a harsh place, with extremely hot weather, sudden rainstorms, and lots of dust, but the love of old friends anchors Loretta while she works through her self-esteem issues and guilt. Nona is a little too level-headed and mature for a 21-year-old, but she is a good foil for Loretta, teaching her how to fight for love. (Sept.)

Long, Hot Texas Summer, Carolyn Brown Review from jeannie zelos

Long, Hot Texas Summer, Carolyn Brown
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews

I'd really looked forward to this, it sounded fun and I enjoy western romances...but I need an edge to my reading, some drama and emotion, and this just felt too light and fluffy. Middle of the road, inoffensive, neutral, no depth to it... It didn't help that Him Indoors is a film addict, John Wayne being a special favourtie so I've seen McLintock more times than I want, even though I don't watch but am reading, the story slowly bleeds into my brain and I felt reading this book that it was so, so simliar that it just wasn't working for me...maybe to do with the fact that I'm not keen on that ( or many) films too.....
So, after getting to around 40% I skim read to the end as I was bored...and didn't find anything suprising, no drama, nothing really deep emotionally, and so its one of those novels where for me it was a bad choice. It's well written and I'm sure for those who want an easy to read novel it will be just what they want. We all want different things after all thankfully, that's what gives us such a wide range of novels.
Stars: two :-( sorry Carolyn, just not a story that worked for me though I'm sure it will for many others.

    BOOK SYNOPSIS

A sassy redhead with an axe to grind…

After catching her husband kissing another woman in the barn, Loretta Sullivan Bailey left Lonesome Canyon Ranch and swore she’d never come back. But when her daughter threatens to drop out of college to become a rancher’s wife, Loretta refuses to let her baby make the same mistake she did. She returns to the ranch, determined to get her daughter back in school by the summer’s end…and resolute on ignoring her feelings for her ex-husband.

A bullheaded but oh so sexy cowboy…

A cowboy from his hat to his boots, ruggedly handsome rancher Jackson Bailey is none too pleased that his feisty—and gorgeous—ex-wife has suddenly shown up seventeen years after their divorce. But despite all their fighting and fussing, the two stubborn former lovers soon discover that old flames burn the hottest. Can they finally put aside their differences and find happiness together…forever?

    My Thoughts

Okay have totally found my favorite location and favorite couple of all the books read by this author .

There is a lot of water under the bridge between Loretta and Jackson Bailey, divorced after only four years of marriage 17 years ago the two have not seen in each other or kept in touch other than discussing their daughter Nona.

Lonesome Canyon Ranch is in the blood for the 21 year old Nona and having lost her heart to one of her father’s cowboys she is determined to live in Texas full time, her mother on the other hand is just as determined that she finish college in Oklahoma and decides that following her daughter to the ranch is the only hope she has of talking her into changing her mind and coming home with Loretta.

Funny thing about “home”, sometimes we never realize that a place we left behind never left our heart and when Loretta returns to the ranch she has no trouble sliding right back into the day to day operations as if she had never left.In 17 years she had never felt more “at home” than she did while driving the hay truck or the tractor, not only was it satisfying but the sense of a job well done really made her realize just how much she had missed Lonesome Canyon all that time.

Jackson was another story, the electricity the pair feel when sharing the same space is just as volatile as it was when they were young. The boy she agreed to “Like” at age 10 soon became the center of her heart by age 16, married to him when pregnant at 18 Loretta never felt like she measured up so when Jackson made a mistake it did not take much for her to jump to conclusions and grab her baby and run home to her parents in Oklahoma.

Now after all the years apart Loretta has come back to Texas determined to bring her daughter home, living in the ranch house and working with Jackson however shows her that maybe her hasty departure can now be worked out as the love never died for either one of them towards each other.

After a lot of stops and starts which includes lots of reliving the past and looking towards new beginnings for the future we have a very well rounded story that delights both longtime fans of Carolyn Brown as well as new readers of her work.

To this day not sure which character was my favorite but sure had fun meeting all of them!

Second chance romance, Texas ranch location, hot cowboys, gorgeous cowgirls and a whole lot of just plain good old fashioned day to day events that all add up to one engaging reading experience that in no way leaves you feeling unsatisfied with the way things work out.

Long, Hot Texas Summer is a must read!

Young love, betrayal and 17 years apart would seem like a sure fire end to ever making up and getting back together but what if you were given a second chance? Loretta and Jackson were kids when they fell in love, married and had a baby girl then one fateful day the floor drops out from under them. Fast forward almost two decades and they reunite for their daughters sake but come face to face with the reality they both played a part in how things turned out how they had. Through love that never really died and hope for righting all the wrongs and moving forward this couple will make you laugh, get mad and root for them to make it work. Throw in a sassy, determined to be a rancher daughter Nona and a feisty, don't give her any lip housekeeper Rosie and you'll be cracking up in no time with their no-nonsense approach to almost everything. There is a good story here and great characters with a lot of spunk, love and opinions that all together make for a great book. I think everyone can agree that somewhere in our lives we have all wished for a second chance now you can sit back and read about Loretta and Jackson's. Enjoy!
