Castle Gornyi, Russia
Present day
For the second time in her life, Kaderin the Coldhearted hesitated to kill a vampire.
In the last instant of a silent, lethal swing, she stayed her sword an inch above the neck of her prey — because she'd found him holding his head in his hands.
She saw his big body tense. As a vampire, he could easily trace away, disappearing. Instead, he remained, raising his face to gaze up at her with dark gray eyes, the color of a storm about to be unleashed. Surprisingly, they were clear not red — which meant the vampire had never drunk a being to death. Yet.
He pleaded with those eyes, and she realized he hungered for an end. He wanted the death blow she'd come to his decrepit castle to deliver.
She'd stalked him soundlessly, primed for battle with a vicious predator. Kaderin had been in Scotland with other Valkyrie when they'd received the call about a "vampire haunting a castle and terrorizing a village in Russia." She had gladly volunteered to destroy it. She was her Valkyrie coven's most prolific killer, her life given over to ridding the earth of leeches.
In Scotland, on that trip alone, she'd killed three.
So why was she hesitating now? Why was she even now easing her sword back to raise it before her? He would be merely one among thousands of her kills, his fangs collected and strung together with the others she'd taken.
The last time she'd stayed her hand had resulted in a tragedy so great her heart had been broken forever by it.
In a deep, gravelly voice, the vampire asked, "Why do you wait?" He seemed startled by the sound of his own words.
I don't know why. Unfamiliar physical sensations wracked her. Her stomach knotted. As though a band had tightened around her chest, her lungs were desperate for breath. I can't comprehend why.
The wind blew outside, sliding over the mountain, making this high room in the vampire's darkened lair groan. Unseen gaps in the walls allowed the chill morning breeze in. As he stood, rising to his full, towering height, her blade caught the wavering light from a cluster of candles and reflected on him.
His grave face was lean with harsh planes, and other females would consider it handsome. His black shirt was threadbare and unbuttoned, displaying much of his chest and sculpted torso, and his worn jeans were slung low at his narrow waist. The wind tugged at the tail of his shirt and stirred his thick black hair. Very handsome. But then, the vampires I kill often are.
His gaze focused on the tip of her sword. Then, as if the threat of her weapon were forgotten, he studied her face, his eyes lingering on each of her features. His blatant appreciation unsettled her, and she clutched the hilt tightly, something she never did.
Honed to masterly sharpness with her diamond file, her sword cut through bone and muscle with little effort. It swung perfectly from her loose wrist as though it were an extension of her arm. She'd never needed to hold it tightly.
Take his head. One less vampire. The species checked in the tiniest way.
"What is your name?" His speech was clipped like an aristocrat's, but held a familiar accent. Estonian. Though Estonia bordered Russia to the west and its inhabitants were considered a Nordic breed of Russian, she recognized the difference and wondered what he was doing away from his own country.
She tilted her head. "Why do you want to know?"
"I would like to know the name of the woman who will deliver me from this."
He wanted to die. After all she'd suffered from his kind, the last thing she wanted to do was oblige the vampire in any way. "You assume I'll deliver your death blow?"
"Will you not?" His lips curled at the corners, but it was a sad smile.
Another tightening on the sword. She would. Of course, she would. Killing was her only purpose in life. She didn't care if his eyes were clear of the red that marked a vampire's bloodlust. Ultimately, he would drink to kill, and he would turn.
They always did.
He stepped around a stack of hard-bound books — some of the hundreds of texts throughout the room with titles imprinted in Russian and, yes, Estonian — and leaned his massive frame against the crumbling wall. He truly wasn't going to raise a hand in defense.
"Before you do, speak again. Your voice is beautiful. As beautiful as your stunning face."
She swallowed, startled to feel her cheeks heating. "Who do you align with . . . ?" She trailed off when he closed his eyes as though listening to her were bliss. "The Forbearers?"
That got him to open his eyes. They were full of anger. "I align with no one. Especially not them."
"But you were once human, weren't you?" The Forbearers were an army, or order, of turned humans. They eschewed taking blood straight from the flesh because they believed that act caused bloodlust. By forbearing, they hoped to avoid becoming like crazed Horde vampires. The Valkyrie remained unoptimistic about their chances.
"Yes, but I've no interest in that order. And you? You're no human either, are you?"
She ignored his question. "Why do you linger here in this castle?" she asked. "The villagers live in terror of you."
"I won this holding on the battlefield and rightly own it, so I stay. And I've never harmed them." He turned away and murmured, "I wish that I did not frighten them."
Kaderin needed to get this killing over with. In just three days, she was to compete in the Talisman's Hie, which was basically a deadly, immortal version of The Amazing Race. Besides hunting vampires, the Hie was the only thing she lived for, and she needed to confirm transportation and secure supplies. And yet she found herself saying, "They told me you live here alone."
He faced her and gave a sharp nod. She sensed that he was embarrassed by this fact, as if he felt lacking that he didn't have a family here.
"How long?"
He hiked his broad shoulders, pretending nonchalance. "A few centuries."
To live solitary for all that time? "The people in the valley sent for me," she said, as if she had to explain herself. The inhabitants of the remote village belonged to the Lore — a population of immortals and "mythical" creatures kept secret from humans. Many of them still worshipped the Valkyrie and provided tributes, but that wasn't what made Kaderin travel to such an isolated place.
The chance to kill even a single vampire had drawn her. "They beseeched me to destroy you."
"Then I await your leisure."
"Why not kill yourself, if that's what you want?" she asked.
"It's . . . complicated. But you save me from that end. I know you're a skilled warrior — "
"How do you know what I am?"
He gave a nod at her sword. "I used to be a warrior, too, and your remarkable weapon speaks much."
The one thing she felt pride in — the one thing in her life that she had left and couldn't bear to lose — and he'd noted its excellence.
He strode closer to her and lowered his voice. "Strike your blow, creature. Know that no misfortune could come to you for killing one such as me. There is no reason to wait."
As if this were a matter of conscience! It wasn't. It couldn't be. She had no conscience. No real feelings, no raw emotions. She was coldhearted. After the tragedy, she'd prayed for oblivion, prayed for the sorrow and guilt to be numbed.
Some mysterious entity had answered her and made her heart like ash. Kaderin didn't suffer from sorrow, from lust, from anger, or from joy. Nothing got in the way of her killing.
She was a perfect killer. She had been for one thousand years, half of her interminable life.
"Did you hear that?" he asked. The eyes that had been pleading for an end now narrowed. "Are you alone?"
She quirked an eyebrow. "I do not require help from others. Especially not for a single vampire," she added, her tone growing absent. Oddly, her attention had dipped to his body once more — to low on his torso, past his navel to the dusky trail of hair leading down. She had a flash imagining of grazing the back of one of her sharp claws along it while his massive body clenched and shuddered in reaction.
Her thoughts were making her uneasy, making her want to wind her hair up into a knot and let the chill air cool her neck —
He cleared his throat. When she jerked her gaze to his face, he raised his eyebrows.
Caught ogling the prey! The indignity! What is wrong with me? She had no more sexual urges than the walking dead vampire before her. She shook herself, forcing herself to remember the last time she'd hesitated.
On a battlefield, an age ago, she had spared and released another of this ilk, a young vampire soldier who had begged for his life.
Yet he had seemed to scorn her for her very mercy. Without delay, the soldier had found her two full-blood sisters fighting in the flatlands below them. Alerted by a shriek from another Valkyrie, Kaderin had sprinted, stumbling down a hill draped with bodies, living and dead. Just as she'd reached them, he'd cut her sisters down.
The younger, Rika, had been taken off guard, because of Kaderin's panicked approach. The vampire had smiled when Kaderin dropped to her knees.
He'd dispatched her sisters with a brutal efficiency Kaderin had since emulated. She'd like to say she started with him, but she'd kept him alive for a time.
So, why would she repeat the same mistake? She wouldn't. She would not ignore a lesson she had paid so dearly to learn.
The sooner I get this done, the sooner I can begin preparing for the Hie.
Squaring her shoulders, she steeled herself. It's all in the follow-through. Kaderin could see the swing, knew the angle she would take so that his head would remain on his neck until he fell. It was cleaner that way. Which was important.
She'd packed her suitcase lightly.

I enjoyed this book; a fusion of Cole's first, sexy novel in the "Immortals After Dark" series and an almost Indiana Jones-esque journey circumnavigating the globe. I particularly enjoyed the characters in this one, somehow deeper than in the series' introduction. <BR/>Sebastian Wroth is our hero, whose muted passion is pitted against the icy Kaderin, an immortal Valkyrie cursed (or is it blessed), long before the setting of the modern-day setting of the book, with a total lack of emotion. <BR/>The main premise of the novel centers around a supernatural series of games, quests of a sort that could almost be termed the preternatural Olympics. Kaderin, the long-time winner, learns that this set of games offers a prize more priceless to her than any other, and before long, a kink is thrown into the midst as Wroth joins in on her behalf to win her favor. <BR/>The book sizzles within the early pages, and throughout the novel sparks run high. The attraction is immediate and definite, and kept my interest throughout the entire novel. <BR/>Again, I really enjoyed this one's characters, and I liked the book overall about as much as "A Hunger like No Other", albeit for different reasons. "No Rest" has less of the all-encompassing eroticism of the first novel, allowing Cole's ability to weave plots worthy of complementing her smut to shine through. The sex is definitely still there and still hot, but less prevalent. I'm tempted to say that it almost makes it betteR. anticipation is a wonderful thing. The scattered settings around the world lend more color, as well. My other favorite part of Cole's writing is her attention to the depth of side characters. I'll be curious to see how their tales unfold, as well. <BR/>Definitely worth a read, and a worthy successor to her first book. A REAL PAGE TURNER.

Kresley Cole takes you into the world of vampires and Valkyre in a way that no one else can. She makes you love the characters and long for something great to happen to them even though at times they are less than likeable! Sebastian Wroth is a vampire that has found his bride but his bride Kaderin the Cold Hearted is a Valkyre that does not wish to be found by her mortal enemy the vampire. She hunts these creatures of the night and slays them with such a vengeance her reputation her badge of pride. Both of these characters have suffered through centuries of pain and loss but each is trying to find a way to replace the pain and feel the comforts of life yet again. But Sebastian is not to be thwarted in his relentless pursuit of Kadja even during her participation in the HIE where the prize of time travel is the reward. Kadja sees this as a way to find and save her beloved sisters from the fate they were dealt. Sebastian uses his abilities to follow and assist Kaderin in her goal and convince her that she is his chosen mate and that they lives are destined to be together forever. There is a cast of additional characters in this book that never cease to amuse and delight and I wait for each of their stories to be told. Kresley Cole has a wit and sense of dry humor that is always pleasing to read. This book while a tad more action packed due to the HIE participation is an excellent read and most enjoyable at every level. Ms. Cole never fails to please her audience and when choosing a book one that is impossible to put down is always a first choice!

Especially during the Hie, an otherworldly version of the Great Race for the beings of Lore. Before the Great Race, Kaderin, a Valkyrie, encountered Sebastian, a Vampire, with the intent to kill him. Somehow, she can't, and what develops after that is a remarkable chase-within-a-chase for a special prize. Towards the end, 4 contestants are vying for the prize: a Lykae, a Siren, Kaderin, and Sebastian. How Sebastian deals with the Siren and the question and response with Kaderin had me laughing so much, tears were coming from my eyes! This was an excellent book, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

In this installment of the Immortals After Dark series, you have Sebastian Wroth and Kaderin the Cold Hearted. Sebastian is a vampire who was forced into being one by his brother, Nikolai, when he was on the verge of dying. Kaderin is a Valkyrie who is known for killing vampires and stringing their teeth to show how many she has defected. The story begins when Kaderin was called by local villagers to kill Sebastian. A twist occurs when Sebastian realizes that Kaderin is his Bride and this starts the journey of Sebastian trying to win over her heart. He chases after her and is then involved in the Hie, where Kaderin has been the winner for the last century or so. Sebastian is determined to win the Hie for Kaderin while she is determined to win it herself. Will their journey to win the Hie pull them together or push them apart?
Kresley Cole ingeniously plot out a wonderfully complicated and romantic novel that truly pulls you out of reality and allow you to escape into this magical world.

Sebastian Wroth, a reluctant and lonely vampire, gets blooded by Kaderin the Coldhearted, a Valkyre warrior and discovers that she is his Bride much to her displeasure. In the first chapter Kresley Cole gets the action started fast, which is her trademark , no waiting for three chapters to be drawn into her story. From chapter one the action is on and let the games begin - literally with he Hie, a supernatural steroid version of the Amazing Race. There are sharks, sirens, minefields, a Columbian drug lord Kaderin needs to seduce and nympho nymphs hitting on the hunky Sebastian. Kaderin and Sebastian are both damaged, complicated but amazing characters . Can they overcome all this and win The Hie? Oh and did I mention Bowen, the ruthless Lykae we first meet in A Hunger Like No Other? He may have the most to win in the competition and he is determined to do just that no matter what or who gets in his way. Kresley Cole has created this amazing world with complicated , interesting characters combined with all the humor! She's the funniest author out there and you will find yourself laughing out loud. Don¿t miss the previous two stories in this series, The Warlord Wants Forever in the anthology Playing Easy to Get and A Hunger Like No Other. You won¿t be able to put it down and you won¿t want it to end.

It is a fast paced, romance thriller that hooks you from beginning to end. If you liked "Hunger Like No Other" you will dig this book.
I enjoy the strength of the female character. She is confident, dangerous, sexy & all around bad ass! The male character is tall, dark, handsome and filled with desire for the woman he seeks to mate. Got to love the drama! Awesome amount of sex mixed with some good laughs and violence!
I enjoyed The Breed Series by Lara Adrian, but I am addicted to Immortals After Dark. I like all the different other-worldly characters rather than all Vamps. This book, just like Cole's others, will make you need a cold shower! I would love to tell you more, but don't want to ruin it for you!

Most of the action in this book centers on the Hie, which keeps the plot fast paced and adds much interest as Kaderin and Sebastian fight various mythical monsters and their competitors for the prize.
Kaderin has the opinion that all vampires are evil and untrustworthy and that if a vampire hasn't turned evil and insane with bloodlust it's just a matter of time before it happens, even though the book points out that there are two types of vampires, those who are evil and turn to Bloodlust and those who survive without turning to that same lust. Although the physical relationship between Sebastian and Kaderin progresses quickly, Sebastian has a battle on his hands to win her trust and love.
I think this book had great romantic conflict, passionate sex and quirky characters. I also enjoyed the additional characters that were introduced and mark this as a must read for anyone in the mood for a little bit of a sexy vampire.

This keeps you hot! Wow! This lady sure knows how to write a sex seen. Oops,did I say that? Well, I can't take it back cuz she does. I love P.C. Cast, Gena Showalter, and so on but this book is ultrasexy. The men are droolishes and the women are always someone to envy. The story is a thrill to read. This is the 2nd book in the Immortals after dark series so make sure you read A hunger like no other first and I would recommend the whole series. This is set up during a nock down, drag out contest, for strenth, stamina, and wit, and there in lies the adventure, plus plenty of, You know you want but you can't have, to make up the romance.Enjoy!

Loved the characters in this book. Its really sad at some parts and I did totally cry like a little baby! But there are really great parts too. I laughed so hard sometimes my husband would look at me like I'd lost my mind. But I promise if you've read the first one then you must read this one too. I mean come on why would you not want to read about a freakin hot as hell vampire?? O please you just have too.. They just get better!!

I guess that I should say anyone who enjoys romance in general, but I collect vampire books so the vamps thrown in adds it to my collection. She is an excellent writer...great characters, plot, sex and good humor thrown in the mix. One of the most enjoyable series I have read. You rock Kresley!
I would also recommend the books by Lara Adrian, J.R. Ward, Karen Chance and of course, Laurell Hamiltion and L.A. Banks. All very good writers.

But this vampire is not just any vamp¿he claims that Kaderin is his bride and he will stop at nothing to make sure she eventually realizes it. This couldn¿t come at a worse time since Kaderin has a contest that she participates in every year and this year the grand prize is something she can¿t walk away from. Her future happiness is at stake¿er in the balance. Sebastian Wroth was turned hundreds of years ago by his brother¿a brother that he has never forgiven. In other words this is a romance that will enthrall, entertain and convince readers Ms. Cole is her for the long run. I am one pleased to realize this.

To be honest I bought this book hoping it would be Nikolai Wroth not his brother Sebastian. Yes I should have known differently because of the expert being of two other characters but I had hope. It is a great book. I am more comfortable with this style of romance then I was with Emma & Lachlain but the series as a whole has become one of my favorite. One of things I enjoy about this series is how they are all linked together & no one is missing out on a chance of love lol Anyway the book gets better as it goes & I recommend this series to people who are into paranormal & romance while not being into the typical stuff.

Hes been residing in a castle getting blood from a butcher to survive this horrible existence and is ready to give up.
Kaderin the Cold Hearted, a Valkyrie who is devoid of any emotion which makes her the perfect killer. Kaderin is called by the towns people to get rid of this darkness that lingers in the old castle. When she accepts and is standing in front of this vampire she hesitates... and these two people who cant feel, start feeling things. Kaderin... emotion and Sebastian... his heart.
Another great book. I really like the Amazing Race aspect to it. I felt really sorry for Bowen and Im really happy hes getting his book next.

This is a great continuation with the main character switching to one of the lesser characters from book one. I justbwish you could have had more of a tie in with emma from book 1 o see what she was doing.

This book I read in a day, not just any day, but a lazy Sunday where I didn't have to do anything but stop to eat. And its just as well for me because otherwise I would have gone without sleep to finish this. Like the previous books in the series I was hooked from the first few chapters.
Over 300 years ago Sebastian Wroth was turned a vampire against his will, he has spent that time hiding from people, barely surviving. Until the day he meets Kaderin. His heart begins to beat and he begins to feel. He has found his Bride.
Kaderin lost her two sisters in battle over 1000 years ago and almost died from her grief, when a benevolent force deadened her sorrow and accidentally extinguished all her emotions. She seeks out the vampire in the castle to kill him only to find him with his head in his hands and her unable to wield the death blow. For the first time in 1000 years Kaderin has feelings, and doesnt know how to deal with them. But she knows she will not end up the bride of a leech.
I loved Kaderin's struggle with her emotions, her feelings for Sebastian, and her fears of how her family will treat her if they were to find out. I also loved the gradual development of feelings. And I wont lie, I also loved the steamy sex scenes.. This book has it all, adventure, sex, fights and love. The only thing I did not like about this book... it ended.

Why does harriet klausner ruin every book she reviews? Plot spoiler queen. You are costing money to bn because ppl dont want a book after you tell everything that happens. Stop ruining it for others.
