Overview

Wherever Chelsea Handler travels, one thing is certain: she always ends up in the land of the ridiculous. Now, in this uproarious collection, she sneaks her sharp wit through airport security and delivers her most absurd and hilarious stories ever.

On safari in Africa, it's anyone's guess as to what's more dangerous: the wildlife or Chelsea. But whether she's fumbling the seduction of a guide by not knowing where tigers live (Asia, duh) or wearing a bathrobe into the bush because her clothes stopped fitting seven margaritas ago, she's always game for the next misadventure.

The situation gets down and dirty as she defiles a kayak in the Bahamas, and outright sweaty as she escapes from a German hospital on crutches. When things get truly scary, like finding herself stuck next to a passenger with bad breath, she knows she can rely on her family to make matters even worse. Thank goodness she has the devoted Chunk by her side-except for the time she loses him in Telluride.

Complete with answers to the most frequently asked traveler's questions, hot travel trips, and travel etiquette, none of which should be believed, UGANDA BE KIDDING ME has Chelsea taking on the world, one laugh-out-loud incident at a time.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

If Chelsea Handler ever suffered from shyness, she conquered it in infancy. The bristling wit who gave us Are You There Vodka? and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang now express delivers a travel essay to outflank all others. Handler's riffs on getting back to nature, hedonism, margaritas, airplane seatmates, and being rejected by a Botswana safari guide would make Fodor's blush. Outrageous and funny.

Publishers Weekly

The outspoken star of the television show Chelsea Lately and author of several bestsellers (Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea) muses on her travels to Africa, Switzerland, the Bahamas and more. Handler takes her raunchy personality along with as she travels the globe, relaying to readers a variety of adventures laced with alcohol, over-the-top behavior, kooky friends and relatives, and a fair share of scatological humor. The most entertaining trips involve multiple locations in Africa such as her experience at a safari in South Africa which she describes as both "majestic" and "like being on the set of Jurassic Park but with room service." In general Handler's humor is centered less on the destination and more toward the nature of travel. She reminisces about the time she mistook shampoo for sunblock, and the problem of vacation weight gain. Along the way, Handler gets injured skiing, lost on a rendezvous with a boyfriend, thrown out of a famous restaurant, and does a riff on training a demon puppy. She's never dull. (Mar.)

Further globe-trotting adventures of the scandalous talk show host. TV host and author Handler (Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me, 2011, etc.) returns with another chronicle of bad behavior, this time focusing on her various fabulous vacations to such exotic destinations as Africa and Switzerland. Her shtick remains intact: an unapologetic stream of calculated outrageousness, including casual near-racism, abuse heaped on friends and family, overindulgence in various intoxicating substances, sexual frankness and scatological misadventure ("Mixing Metamucil with vodka will be successful in helping you go to the bathroom, but your timing should be strategic if staying with a friend. Once you clog someone's toilet, they have a hard time remembering anything about you other than you clogging their toilet"). The results are fitfully funny, though the author's grotesque sense of privilege and entitlement begins to grate; though this tone is certainly also part of Handler's highly polished comic persona, readers not blessed with the TV star's wealth and coterie of pampering enablers may begin to resent her petty complaints and blithe disregard for consequences. The bulk of the narrative concerns Handler's safari expedition in Africa, and the author's observations, when not actively offensive, are amusing. Handler is particularly adept at realizing her characters: Her traveling companions, safari guides and resort staffers emerge vividly drawn, and her ear for distinctive and telling dialogue is well-honed. She is less successful maintaining interest when going on about her dogs, a common pitfall of overly involved pet owners. The highlights of the book are a riotously funny set piece in which our heroine evacuates into her bathing suit while perilously far from appropriate restroom facilities and a reproduced email exchange between Handler and a pathetically delusional suitor. This material is by turns gross, mean and compulsively funny, which sums up the appeal of the book when Handler is on her game. Fans of Handler's outrageous persona will find much to enjoy; the unconverted will remain so.

"I woke up at 4:45 a.m. in Johannesburg, South Africa, in my bra, underwear, and eyeshades. My head was torqued to the right due to the length and width of the pillow I was resting it on, which had the same dimensions as a panty liner. The duvet accompanying this 'pillow' was an inch or two wider and could have doubled as a buffet napkin." ~ pg. 12

And so begins the misadventure of comedian Chelsea Handler on safari in Africa. Complete with pictures, this fifth release by the E! Television star is hilarious. Never mind recovering from ACL surgery, Chelsea books an impromptu vacation for her and close friends/family.

Bloody Marys and champagne for the morning safari rides. Back-to-back 90-minute massages. Grandma in the back, sunroof top. Visiting an orphanage where each child had an iPad Mini or Macbook. Hot travel tips. Shenanigans of lions, tigers, baboons and elephants. These are just some of the funny moments explained in Uganda Be Kidding Me.

It's also not a Chelsea Handler book without at least one reference to a black person that causes a mayjah side-eye (see: Mount a Negro chapter). I expect nothing less from her. If you are sensitive to dry humor, then Uganda Be Kidding Me is not the book for you to read. However, if you are anything like me and enjoy sharp wit in the form of laugh-out-loud anecdotes, then add Uganda Be Kidding Me to your reading lists. It is a great choice for reading material while traveling, starting with the frequently asked traveler's questions.     Literary Marie of Precision Reviews

After reading Uganda Be Kidding Me, my new mission in life is to get white girl wasted with Chelsea Handler in South Africa while watching stampeding elephants. It's been such a long time since I laughed this hard at a book. I even snorted. Chelsea brings back her perverted and saturated with alcohol humor in her latest book that gives us a peek into traveling her way.

I'll admit that I'm not usually one for non-fiction unless it's a really well written memoir, and Chelsea Handler delivers. The majority of the book follows Handler & Co. on a safari escapade in South Africa. The stories will have you getting the side-eye from anyone around you as you dissolve into bouts of laughter. If you ever doubt Chelsea's account of the trip, she provides copious amounts of entertaining pictures.

The rest of the book is comprised of tales from her other adventures. It's a refreshing break from the norm, and I loved every second of it. Chelsea's writing style is very authentic, and it feels like she's recounting a story in person. Her humor and wit prevail and make the experience that much more enjoyable. She's fearless with her words, and it's an absolutely refreshing quality in a book. I definitely recommend picking up Uganda Be Kidding Me if you're a fan of dry humor and questionably offensive wit.

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing, and Chelsea Handler.

    Not worth it!

A very disappointing effort from the usually hysterical Chelsea Handler. First of all, the book is filled with errors. Second of all, the stories are lacking in detail and humor. Most read as a brag book to how wealthy and deserving Ms. Chandler has become due to her celebrity status. Add to this several crude...almost vicious...so called jokes about Jews, blacks, Germans and gays. This book is difficult to pick back up and finish! Don't waste your money.

This book was awful. I consider myself to be a fan of Chelsea Handler, as well as her other books. However, Uganda Be Kidding Me fell drunkenly face-first into its own vomit. Not only was the humor forced and repetitive, but she presents herself as this child incapable of any adult activity that doesn't include margaritas and spending lavish amounts of money. She apparently learned a new word - "infantilized" - and while she seems to think it's a compliment, she only reveals her inability to cope with daily life.

She should also fire her editors, ASAP. They seem to have been as drunk as she was while proofing this book.

Had it's moments but didn't measure up to earlier Chelsea books

I'm a HUGE fan of Chelsea but have been let down by Lies Chelsea Handler told me and now this book. It was funny at times, but not as relatable as her earlier books that featured more about her early life and family. It improved towards the end when it focused more on her life that was not related to the trip.

Horrible book, was once a fan of chelsea handler, not any more, shes a vulgar, vile woman. And if youve seen her on other talk show shes not very funny. She tries to hard to be shocking and it fails. Save your money dont buy the book.

How dissapointing after this and her other book My horizontal life" (pretty discusting as well), would never buy another book of hers ever again. Even one star is way too much.
