    Switzerland - Limited Usefulness

This is the first Rick Steves guidebook I've purchased. He always seemed more budget/backpacky than I wanted to travel but in the current economy budget travel is better than no travel. I purchased the book mainly because of its section on visiting the Berner Oberland part of Switzerland where I am planning to visit. That section is very thorough regarding what to see and how to get to it, with special emphasis on train travel. I'm planning to travel by train so I found that helpful.

What I didn't realize about Steve's books is that they are not guidebooks in the sense of a Fodors, Frommers, Eyewitness, etc. They do not have information about every city or area in a country. They only have information about cities or areas that Steves thinks a traveler should visit. Based on other guidebooks descriptions I plan to spend a night in Basel to visit the old town and several well rated art museums. Basel is not mentioned in Steves Switzerland guide. Two other smaller towns with highly rated art collections that are easy daytrips from Zurich, Baden and Winterthur, are also not included in his book. Budget information would have been helpful for all three locations but had to be found in other guidebooks and online.

If you are planning to travel to just the areas Steves writes about in "Switzerland" then this book may work fine for you. You will still likely want to check other guidebooks to see what he has left out just in case some of the omissions are things that would interest you. What he covers, he covers thoroughly and at times with some humor. He definitely has a unique perspective. However, this is probably not the one and only guide that you can take to cover all of your travel in Switzerland.

recommend as a supplement to other books

Rick Steves advice is always helpful, especially when looking for local highlight and cafes.
I am taking it ,via Nook, on a trip later this year to Switzerland.
