I bought this book for my upcoming trip to Ireland and my travel friend bought another. We found out that my book (Lonely Planet) covered a lot more ground than hers. There was more information on the towns and cities; my friend's book didn't cover half as much.
The biggest downside to this book is when we were selecting B&B and Inns to stay at. Lonely Planet listed "Budget", "Mid-Range" and "High-Range." All of the budget were hostels or campgrounds. The mid-range were not that mid-range in my eyes so I ended up using the DiscoverIreland website for most of our reservations. If the place we found on the website also matched one mentioned in the book...that was great. But we found more in our budget by using that website.
I'm hoping to use the book extensively on the trip however for places to go, history information and places to eat.

About to make my 3rd trip to Ireland so this is the 3rd edition of the book I have purchased. I think Lonely Planet does the best job out of all the guidebooks out there as they cover all places, even if just a paragraph or 2. Their information is usually reliable and they will send you where the others won't for a more authentic experience. Buy this book or any other Lonely Planet guidebook!

I'm still planning my trip, but I love the way this guide is organized. It's very easy to use. I like the having all the information about a location grouped together. I found the Dublin section especially useful because it's organized by area within the city after an overview of the best things to do in Dublin. There are plentiful maps and illustrations with highlights clearly set out. I have 3 guide books, but this is the one I'm taking with me.

Even after 20 minutes with a tech support rep, I was unable to use this effectively as the info skipped 20-30 pages, froze constantly and was otherwise useless. so much for not needing to carry an actual guidebook. The Donegal chapter was no better.
