Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
05/05/2014
In this memoir, Esposito recounts her struggle with crippling health problems and her experience being diagnosed with celiac disease (an autoimmune disorder that makes her allergic to gluten) at age 35. It’s hard to sustain sympathy for the actress-turned-gluten-free-bakery owner, who spends much of the book railing about how others have doubted, ignored, and misunderstood her condition. However, her rags-to-riches story will keep readers turning pages. Esposito grew up on Staten Island and moved to Manhattan, where she waitressed while taking acting classes. Eventually she was discovered and her career took off, with roles in movies like Crash, as well as television shows like Spin City and Samantha Who? The second section of the book is a helpful guide for living with celiac disease, with tips on eating out and dating, as well as appealing recipes. As Esposito writes, “It takes a village of celiacs to help anyone learn how to thrive with this illness.” Her story will no doubt appeal to her fans and others with chronic health issues, though her advice to fellow celiac sufferers (rotation dieting, sprouting grains, juicing) may seem daunting for those on a restricted budget. Highly Recommended

Jennifer's story is a must read for anyone with Celiac Disease or anyone who suspects they may have Celiac Disease, food allergies or other related digestive problems. She is amazing in her ability to tell her story and to help even those of us without Celiac Disease to understand just how devastating the disease is, just how hard it is to diagnose, and just how many symptoms seemingly unrelated to the digestive system are caused by this disease. This disease is due to an absolute intolerance and autoimmune response to Gluten (and often aggravated by other food allergies)that destroys the digestive system's ability to extract nutrition from foods, to produce serotonin, etc. Jennifer draws on the expertise of medical specialists in Celiac Disease for much of the material in this book. She provides a clear path to obtain more information, life style changes, as well as recipes, etc.

    Very Helpful Information

Interesting reading if you are one who suffers from Celiac disease or other digestive sensitivities and allergies. Jennifer describes her slow road to the discovery of her disease, and she gives helpful and encouraging advice to those of us just starting this new lifestyle. I am so disappointed that I don't live near her bakery. I do hope that she completes her goal of making healthy allergy-free foods available to us all. That would be terrific.
