If you can get this, this is one of the best Machu Picchu background books available. It is superb, details many aspects of what you will see, provides historical context, and includes great maps including a detailed re-creation by National Geographic artists of what the sight may have looked like when the Incans lived there. Strongly recommended.

I just returned from Machu Picchu and had read over half of this book before I inadvertently left it on the plane. When I arrived at the site, I felt right at home - as if I'd been there before. As it turned out, I was able to give almost as much information to my friends about Machu Picchu as our very capable guide. I owe that knowledge to the authors of this book and the terrific format they chose to impart their valuable knowledge. I have just ordered a replacement for me and one for each of my friends!

I thought I was buying a guide for the whole area of Machu Picchu-not just about the ruins. This is invaluable as a guide for the ruins, but not as a tourist guidebook. In Depth-a must have book if you visit the site, especially without a guide or to familiarize yourself with what you will see. Just expect any vicinity information, such as hotels or how to get to the site.
