Overview

Majestic mountains, towering redwoods, and river-carved canyons---a visit to the national parks of the West is a rite of passage. This full-color guide is the planning tool for a perfect parks trip. It includes 36 of America’s best-loved parks, like Grand Canyon and Yellowstone; the nation’s newest park, Pinnacles, designated in January 2013; and coverage of Banff and Jasper, two draws in the Canadian Rockies.

NEW THIS EDITION: The National Parks of the West have drawn millions of visitors and captured the American imagination since the very first park, Yellowstone, was designated in 1872. The new edition of Fodor’s National Parks of the West will include a new chapter on the best of Pinnacles National Park, which President Obama designated in early 2013. It is the first new national park in over 8 years. Completely revised road trip itineraries will take the guesswork out of planning the perfect parks trip, with advice on how long to stay at each park, which parks to string together, and driving distances.
ILLUSTRATED FEATURES: Rich full-color features help travelers make the most of top experiences, from white-water rafting on the Colorado River and understanding Yellowstone's geothermal features to choosing a historic lodge and stargazing. The illustrated field guides to wildlife and geology make identification a snap.
ESSENTIAL TRIP-PLANNING TOOLS: A must for summer travel, this book is not only indispensible on the ground; it also makes choosing a park simple. Thirty-six western U.S. national parks and two Canadian parks are divided by state in the What's Where section so it's easy to decide which parks to see together. The Best of the National Parks section breaks down the parks by themes, such as parks for day trippers, for spotting wildlife, and for inspiration. The Outdoor Adventures section lists the best parks for hiking, rafting, rock climbing, and camping. Everything needed to plan a visit is here, from information on discount park passes and what to pack to tips for families and photographers. Each park has a convenient overview with highlights and practical advice for getting around, plus information on activities, dining, and lodging in and around the park.
DISCERNING RECOMMENDATIONS: Fodor's National Park of the West offers savvy advice and recommendations from local writers to help park visitors make the most of their trip. Fodor's Choice designates our best picks, from hotels to activities, while "Word of Mouth" quotes from fellow travelers provide valuable park insights.
ABOUT FODOR’S AUTHORS: Each Fodor's Travel Guide is researched and written by local experts.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Within a few minutes, browsers can become familiar with this book's useful features.
Library Journal

From Arches to Zion, from the well-worn paths of Yosemite to the seldom-visited Channel Islands off California, Fodor's has come up with an indispensable guide to 38 national parks located in the western parts of the United States and Canada, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. With the usual Fodor skill, each park is fully covered yet includes recommendations for what to see if you're there for only a day. Following a most informative chapter on "Choosing a Park," the guide gives visitors the type of information guaranteed to make their trip memorable. Lodging, directions, places to dine, nearby attractions, best times to visit, average monthly temperatures, concessionaire offerings, recommended activities, medical precautions, pet acceptance, and a brief history of the park result in an essential reference for anyone considering a visit. It is particularly useful in suggesting that readers consider lesser-known parks such as Joshua Tree, Capitol Reef, and the Guadalupe Mountains, as well as selecting the best times to go to the popular ones such as Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone. The scope of this work, combined with the ever-increasing interest in national parks, makes this a fine candidate both for reference and for circulating collections. Highly recommended for all public, school, and special libraries.
—Joseph L. Carlson

Good book, but watch out for the errors. I bought this in 2011 for a long trip west and have used for planning visits to several parks. Upon visiting the parks, I discover errors. For example, Dead Horse Point State Park is not east of Arches National Park, it is to the west and south and is incorrect on page 95. Also, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is called that because the Yellowstone River runs through it (the Colorado River does not run through the park, as the guide states on page 798, and certainly did not create the famous Canyon - of the Yellowstone River! Perhaps these errors will be corrected for the new edition coming out in 2014. Currently it puzzles me why the writers or editors would not catch such glaring errors if they really are familiar with the subject matter. It's a shame because I often purchase the Fodor's series for trips (for example to Europe) and wonder if they have the same inaccuracies. The guides have many good qualities otherwise.

I purchased this book before taking a 2 week trip in our motorhome. We
traveled from Michigan through Route 66 up to Montana & Wyoming (We
saw a total of 7 National Parks). This book is a must if you are heading
to any national park. It is by far worth every penny spent. I use this
book every time we go on vacation. It offers everything from do's &
don't. What type and size of vehicle can and can not be traveled on
which roads; campsites in and around the park, places to see and do. It
is the Best Resource I have found when traveling to a national park(s).

    Helpful resource

Purchased this book for a recent trip to CA with a specific park in mind. The write-up on the park was extremely useful and accurate.
