Editorial Reviews

Chicago Tribune
In Panama Canal By Cruise Ship, author Anne Vipond goes beyond the standard cruise-guide fodder of ship and port descriptions. Though she supplies that information, she also tells the story of the canal's arduous construction and what its eventual completion meant to the world. She fleshes out details on Panama itself and the countries and cities one is most likely to visit and the plants and animals one is most likely to see during a trans-canal cruise. There's even a pull-out map of the isthmus with all major points identified. It's a comprehensive work.

    Great Cruise Information!!

I am just getting into this book, but so far, find it is a great book for planning and information before our cruist in September. Very interested in the information about the places that most of the cruise ships stop while on this trip. Gives lots of good advice about where to go and what to see.

A perfect guide for Caribbean cruisers

This small guide is very current, and gives a great overview of cruising in the Caribbean, as well as brief but detailed discussions of each island and country. The map of the Panama Canal was the most complete and current available - better than the one our tour guide had! The ms Zuiderdam was selling the book onboard (for more money).

    Panama Canal and more

I picked up Anne Vipond's Panama Canal by Cruise Ship because I had used her book on the Mediterranean cruise ports. She includes lots of background and history on the Canal which I found added to my experience. When traveling to the Panama Canal it is so much more meaningful if you are aware of how it was built and place it in the context of it's time. If you don't have time to read McCullough's Path Between the Seas, Vipond at least gives you enough to enhance the experience.
The book also contains lots of information on Islands you may visit on any of the Panama cruises. The title in this way is deceiving as the book includes so much more than the canal. It is well illustrated with beautiful photos.
The big plus to me for buying the book is the information on different excursions available. I find it overwelming when planning excursions as so much is offered and very little information included from the cruise lines.
The pull out map that is included is invaluable as it details the canal itself. This enabled me to understand where I was and not see the Canal out of context.
I give a strong recommendation to buy this book. The only drawback? It's heavy to carry but worth the weight.

    Excellent companion to Panama!

Great content on the history and challenges which faced the US while building this great canal. Maps are color and very helpful. Covers each lock with a history and separate map. Very good shore excursion info. Foolishly, left the book out on balcony during downpour.
