Overview

Right down America’s Main Street it rolled, pausing at each town along the way, then moving on, carrying travelers in search of adventure, romance, or that rare chance for a new beginning. Route 66 knew many names: the Mother Road, Will Rogers Highway, the Neon Road. And it lived up to each. Travelers met the land, found new friends—and often themselves. Now, more than a quarter-century since being officially abandoned, the old road still keeps its promise.

Today, all along the highway’s 2,448-mile length from Chicago to L.A., signs carrying its magic double sixes once again give direction to the journey. Yes, they assure you, this is still Route 66. . . .

More than twenty years after the original publication of Route 66, this completely updated and expanded guide will make the trip along the Mother Road easier and even more exciting. Responding to requests from readers and travelers, Tom Snyder offers up-to-date routings, elegant and easy-to-read new maps, and revised information on roadside attractions. Filled with love, high jinks, and mystery, the stories Snyder narrates truly capture the flavor of the Main Street of America. Cattle rustlers, gangsters, hitchhikers, and ghosts all make appearances in these nostalgic glimpses of history-in-the-making along America’s most famous highway.

The popularity of the old Route 66 is one of America's great comeback stories. This fully revised and expanded edition of Snyder's classic guide will make the trip along the "Mother Road" more exciting than ever with new information on mini-tours, photography tips, a planning section, and more. Over 40 maps.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Route 66 conjures up varied images for many Americans. Those who traveled it before the Interstate Highway System crisscrossed the country with high-speed expressways (as did this reviewer) have their own memories, as do those who watched the TV series and lusted after that Corvette. Snyder has traveled Route 66 extensively from its origin in Chicago to its terminus in Santa Monica. He provides detailed directions to the driver wishing to follow the old road. In many places, Route 66 is gone or is now the interstate, but there are still enough miles left to give modern travelers a trip back in time. Motels, restaurants, museums, scenic wonders, and local histories are included. Fun to read, though not an essential purchase, this would appeal to those planning a leisurely drive through the Midwest and Southwest.-- Thomas K. Fry, UCLA Libs.

Fine Tips For Those California Trips

This book is at least a 'must read' for anyone who is looking to take a trip down the 'Mother Road'. I have all three editions of this guide, and I have found it to be a valuable tool on my excursions on Route 66. Tom Snyder provides the reader not only with some helpful maps and directions to the alignments of the road, but also some great extras. He relates interesting stories about the road, the towns, the people and about interesting events, all of which help create the colorful tapestry of the route's history. Snyder also provides some tidbits on good places to eat and stay to better enhance the experience of driving on the Main Street Of America. This is the kind of book not to be found on a coffee table, but on the seat beside you as you head down the highway with its pages 'dog eared', and adorned with coffee and classic road food stains, like those delicious Cozy Dogs or ribs from 'The Pit'. Kudos to the writer, here. I only wish more highways had guides like these.

Excellent gift for friends especially those who have retired and want to travel the USA.

Excellent travel information guide. Well worth using for reading and for the road trip. Have purchased as gifts for friends and family who wish to take road trips and they love it. Purchased it for myself when I bought it for friends, because I couldn't resist, and I love it. Quite the fun and nostalgic trip for those of us who traveled the "Mother Road" in the early days, before freeways. A fun, historical book whether you travel or not, but it does make you want to take the Route 66 vacation road trip.

    Route 66 in an RV

This book was invaluable for our recent trip of route 66 and highway 40. The best part for us was information about road difficulties with an rv and we plan to return in our corvette to cover the parts of route 66 we couldn't get to.
