Overview

"Like Henry David Thoreau, but with Wi-Fi." -Boston Globe

What if everything you ever wanted isn't what you actually want?

Twenty-something, suit-clad, and upwardly mobile, Joshua Fields Millburn thought he had everything anyone could ever want. Until he didn't anymore.

Blindsided by the loss of his mother and his marriage in the same month, Millburn started questioning every aspect of the life he had built for himself. Then, he accidentally discovered a lifestyle known as minimalism...and everything started to change.

That was four years ago. Since, Millburn, now 32, has embraced simplicity. In the pursuit of looking for something more substantial than compulsory consumption and the broken American Dream, he jettisoned most of his material possessions, paid off loads of crippling debt, and walked away from his six-figure career.

So, when everything was gone, what was left?

Not a how-to book but a why-to book, Everything That Remains is the touching, surprising story of what happened when one young man decided to let go of everything and begin living more deliberately. Heartrending, uplifting, and deeply personal, this engrossing memoir is peppered with insightful (and often hilarious) interruptions by Ryan Nicodemus, Millburn's best friend of twenty years.

    A must read!

Millburn (with Nicodemus) has written an extraordinary book, totally unlike other minimalism books. He delves deeply into the psyche of WHY we need to lighten our worldly/materialistic loads and how doing so has really changed his life. He shares his experiences and how he got where he is today in an interesting way. Millburn's writing flows well and is enjoyable to read. He has inspired me to change my life in very positive ways, and I feel much stronger in myself now. A must read! I look forward to seeing more from him.

A good read in the right direction

This gave me a glimpse into what a simpler, less cluttered life might be. That glimpse also became a nudge. I accepted the challenge of the Minimalist Game last month and life keeps getting freer. I was on my way before I encountered this book, and the book gave me some insights into my journey. The "game" gave me insights into myself. Thanks, Joshua & Ryan! This book is an easy and funny read.

Fantastic read! This book is just wonderful. Josh and Nick have quite the chemistry together and it's apparent throughout this book. I read it in one sitting and could read it again right now. The struggles and triumphs will be easily relatable in anyone's life, especially those who are wanting to be a part of the minimalism lifstyle. Well Done!

I really enjoyed reading this book - so much that I read it straight through. I am beginning my minimalism journey and this book was a source of great encouragement and insight. Josh Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus are excellent writers - very easy to read and relate to. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a view into the life of a minimalist or of the minimalist lifestyle.
