Overview

Distinguished journalist and former White House correspondent Tom Brokaw celebrates the lives and achievements of what he calls "the Greatest Generation"—the generation of Americans who fought in World War II and who led the nation, and the world, by their example in the postwar years—in this collection of two bestselling books.

The Greatest Generation tells the story of America's citizen heroes and heroines, who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II, and who went on to build modern America. They were a generation united not only by a common purpose, but by common values—duty, honor, courage, service, love of family and country, and, above all, responsibililty for oneself. The Greatest Generation Speaks continues the story of the first book, drawing on letters, interviews, and memoirs of members of the Greatest Generation that offer, in Brokaw's own words, "firsthand accounts of battles and poignant reflections on loneliness, exuberant expressions of love and somber accounts of loss."

The Greatest Generation/The Greatest Generation Speaks is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging and an attractive silk-ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensible cornerstone for every home library.

    Disappointing but still interesting

This is a fine looking book, as are all the books in The Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Collection. I approached it with interest and looked forward to reading it. I have finished "The Greatest Generation" but haven't started "The Greatest Generation Speaks."
My father - now departed - was in World War II. Many of the observations Tom Brokaw made concerning this generation seemed right on. Saving every thing. Devotion to spouse. Quiet, reluctant to speak out about the war years. It made me wish I had spoken more to my father about his experiences while I had the opportunity.
Unfortunately, my overall impression of the book was disappointment. While it's interesting to read about some of the people that went on to become famous after their war experiences, after a while it seemed just a routine list of acheivements and interests. A lot of it failed to inspire me about what interested me most concerning the book - what my father and others like him went through to acheieve our freedom and life.
It looks like the second book focusses more on personal remembrances. I'm hoping it will be a more enjoyable read.
