Overview

Following up the phenomenal success of her headline-making New York Times bestseller I Hate Everyone...Starting With Me, the unstoppable Joan Rivers is at it again. When her daughter Melissa gives her a diary for Christmas, at first Joan is horrified—who the hell does Melissa think she is? That fat pig, Bridget Jones? But as Joan, being both beautiful and introspective, begins to record her day-to-day musings, she realizes she has a lot to say.
About everything. And everyone, God help them.
The result? A no-holds-barred, delightfully vicious and always hilarious look at the everyday life of the ultimate diva. Follow Joan on a family vacation in Mexico and on trips between New York and Los Angeles where she mingles with the stars, never missing a beat as she delivers blistering critiques on current events, and excoriating insights about life, pop culture, and celebrities (from A to D list), all in her relentlessly funny signature style.
This is the Diary of a Mad Diva. Forget about Anais Nin, Anne Frank, and that whiner Sylvia Plath. For the first time in a century, a diary by someone that’s actually worth reading.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Giving Joan Rivers a diary seems like a very risky dare. Her daughter Melissa's Christmas gift offered her octogenarian the ultimate invitation: be even more completely uncensored than usual. The veteran comic mom responded to the challenge with predictable aplomb, practically searing the pages with scathing comments about cohorts, celebrities, family, and, not least, herself. Hilarious; definitely more funny than botox.

Publishers Weekly
09/01/2014
Comedian, bestselling author (I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me), and award–winning TV host Rivers continues her tirade against the world in this farcical day-by-day diary. Delivering more of the same outrageousness she's known for, Rivers' satire touches on everything from slavery to the holocaust, eating disorders to immigration. While no topic is too taboo, the term "politically incorrect" undermines how far she's willing to go in her faux-bigoted act. Fat jokes, potty humor and raunchy gags abound in her celebrity-driven shtick, which picks on the same (mostly female) targets, old and new: Anne Hathaway, Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Kirstie Alley and Barbara Streisand are all on the receiving end of her judgment. While some of her antics still zing, most of the routine here, which relies less on her wit than pure provocation, falls flat. No one rails quite like Rivers, but readers are advised to go slow lest the material stale fast. (July)
Kirkus Reviews
2014-06-05
A Dear Diary–style recounting of the author’s day-to-day professional and personal life.Rivers’ (I Hate Everyone…Starting With Me, 2013, etc.) merciless, yearlong skewering of the universe begins Jan. 1 and proceeds through the year. Sparing no one, including herself, the author employs her typically ribald take on the numerous individuals, groups or topics encountered while the author travels from her home in New York to gigs around the country and vacations in Mexico or the Hamptons. A sampling of the real or imagined scenarios Rivers recounts in her trademark style include: Anne Frank’s diary-keeping skills; Barbara Streisand’s looks; dating services; Paula Deen and the N-word; her ideas for new TV shows; Kirstie Alley’s weight (“Today is National Pig Day and I completely forgot to call [her]! I’ll send her a note. Or a bucket of slop. She’s not that fussy”); J. Edgar Hoover’s fashion choices (“J. Edgar Hoover and I were very close. In fact, we were the same size. I used to lend him my clothes for special occasions. He looked especially fetching in a simple summer shift with matching cloche and open-toed-shoes”). Rivers also includes numerous photos showing her swigging from a bottle of vodka with cigarette and prescription pill bottle in hand; holding up a “will work for food sign”; dressed as a parody ofthe twerking Miley Cyrus; and decorating a Christmas tree with an Orthodox Jewish friend. It’s all grand fun for the author, but after a while, the daily entries read like snippets of a stand-up routine. For a live audience, Rivers may astound with her stories and blue language, but when continually lobbed on the page, the shtick grows predictable and stale.Readers who never tire of Rivers and her distinctive take on the world will lap up the newest entree from the octogenarian comedian. Others will want to take a pass.

Diary of a Mad Diva is everything I hoped for. I love Joan Rivers' approach to comedy on TV, and it is just as fresh and funny in book form. I can't count the number of times I laughed out loud while reading Diary. It is a phenomenal book with comic brilliance bursting from every page.

Ah, Joan - The world is not the same without your rapier wit in it. A much less interesting world, with much less LOLs. Just 2 weeks ago, you were on Sirius Radio, promoting your book and sounding strong, like we had at least 15 years more of Joan Rivers to enjoy. I still can't believe the circumstances of your demise, I hope that Melissa, Cooper and the rest of your family and friends can find some peace and serenity at this time. Prayers for all.

    HOW IROIC!!!

I just wrote my review on this book on July 25-14.Now I'm offering my condolences to Melissa, her daughter and best friend and to all her friends, family and fans. What makes this so difficulte is to know that she was still going strong and being in the lime-life as she was.I'm espessially sad for her team at FASHION POLICE.I know they are crushed.I could go on and on you old sluts and pimps out their(: I'll leave it at that. May GOD keep you in HIS tender loving care. A Fan

    We all get old

You know those of you who dismiss her for being old. I sure hope you never get old and loose your timing or your beauty. The thing about getting older is you become more accepting of people and see them for what they are. This knowledge comes slowly and is a wonderful gift. It does no good to be mean. But for some people that is all they know. You know who you are.

    Poor book

Absolute waste of money. Once excellent comedian who is stretching to be funny and has turned cruel with her attempt at humor. Has some funny entries, but overall is disusting.

If You Like Joan Rivers, You Will Like This Book

It is classic Joan Rivers. She is brash, insulting, banal and simply hilarious. You just have to enter the book with all of your morals tossed to the side and just enjoy the humor. I took the book with me on a trip to visit my grandmother dying of cancer. Honestly, it was just the escape I needed when I was back in my room.

When you have to add a page at the halfway point of your book em

When you have to add a page at the halfway point of your book emphasizing that the book is a "humor book,"
that tells it all. Her "humor" is a collection of ugly insults, attempts to shock, and filthy language. The book starts out with
a good number of Holocaust and Anne Frank jokes and goes downhill from there.  I remember her stand up from years ago, but that was
apparently back when TV censors were more restrictive. This woman is simply not funny. I'm glad I borrowed this from the library. Don't waste your money.
