Overview

You know Judy Greer, right? Maybe from The Wedding Planner, 13 Going on 30, Carrie, Arrested Development, or The Descendants. Yes, you totally recognize her. And, odds are, you already feel like she’s your friend.

In her first book of essays, I Don’t Know What You Know Me From, Greer writes about everything you would hope to hear from your best friend: how a midnight shopping trip to Walgreens can cure all; what it’s like to wake up one day with stepchildren; and how she really feels about fans telling her that she’s prettier in person. Yes, it’s all here—from the hilarious moments to the
intimate confessions.

But Judy Greer isn’t just a regular friend—she’s a celebrity friend. Want to know which celebs she’s peed next to? Or what the Academy Awards are actually like? Or which hot actor gave her father a Harley-Davidson? Don’t worry; Greer reveals all of that, too. You’ll love her because, besides being laugh-out-loud funny, she makes us genuinely feel like she’s one of us. Because even though she sometimes has a stylist and a makeup artist, she still wears (and hates!) Spanx. Because even after almost twenty years in Hollywood, she still hasn’t figured everything out—except that you should always wash your face before bed. Always.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Perpetual supporting actress Judy Greer is perhaps best recognized for her recurring part on Arrested Development, but beyond that, it's a "take your pick": 27 Dresses; The Wedding Planner; Archer; Two and a Half Men. All of those non-starring roles make her a perfect candidate for a hilarious, self-depreciating memoir, a la Tina Fey. Make no mistake though: I Don't Know What You Know Me From is no mere imitation. Here Greer deserves top billing of her own.

Kirkus Reviews
2014-02-06
A memoir by a rare breed of Hollywood actress: happy, well-adjusted and working. Greer, who has appeared in nearly 100 movies and TV roles (this is her first book), knows she is lucky. Her unconventional parents—her mother was fired from a convent before she could take her final vows as a nun—wholeheartedly supported her teenage ballet and acting aspirations, and she got cast, after her first audition, in a movie with David Schwimmer. This is not a Hollywood roman à clef; Greer doesn't dish and is amazed by and grateful for her good fortune. She embodies the role she calls "the ultimate movie best friend…funny, cute, sassy and approachable." She is so approachable, in fact, that people who believe they recognize her routinely ask, "What do I know you from?" Her initial response: "First of all, hi." During her 15-year career, she has become proficient at what she calls "fan profiling." Eager to help, she asks, "What are you into?" and intuits by the questioner's clothes, age and sex which productions they may have seen her in. It could be from one (or several) of her wide-ranging roles, such as Arrested Development, Two and a Half Men, The Wedding Planner or 13 Going on 30. Greer is an engaging and witty storyteller, at turns wistful (of her beloved hometown, she writes, "Detroit is America's sad family member who can't catch a break") and unsparingly honest ("I used to be more ugly"). She is also willing to laugh at some of her more absurd can-you-believe-it stories—e.g., when she finally got the apartment she always dreamed of, beneath the iconic HOLLYWOOD sign, it turned out to be full of cockroaches and thieves and constantly under the watch of police helicopters. Readers will wish Greer was their conspiratorial best friend.
From the Publisher
“A hilarious, heartfelt memoir.”
InStyle

“These essays on everything from her mom the (former) nun to her inability to ditch a mortifying vanity plate because her dad made (“*2B”) to her passion for her toothless bulldog rescue will make you wish Greer was your wacky best friend.”
People Magazine

“Intimate and frank . . .  And for fans of hers who do know why they know her, and who have been clamoring for the gifted character actress to get the starring role they’ve long felt she’s deserved, I Don’t Know What You Know Me From proves what they’ve always suspected: Judy Greer shines in the starring role. It really is just like gossiping—and, occasionally, kvetching—with a friend over a glass of wine.”
The Daily Beast

"The book is so funny it might make [Greer] a household name."
Ladies' Home Journal

"[Greer's] charming memoir is a series of vignettes covering her childhood in Michigan, her adventures in stepparenting, and her experiences on film and television sets. . . . [Her] bubbly best-friend personality and self-deprecating anecdotes will have readers rooting for her, and will likely win her new fans."
Booklist

"Greer is an engaging and witty storyteller, at turns wistful and unsparingly honest. . . . Readers will wish Greer was their conspiratorial best friend."
Kirkus

“Reading this book is like talking to Judy Greer herself, impossible to do without a smile on your face. Finally this perennial co-star gets to confound Hollywood’s expectations and take center stage in a role that’s every bit as hilarious, delightful, and brutally honest as the comedienne herself. It’s a role only one person was born to play: Sandra Bullock. (Although maybe Judy could be her friend or something?)”
—Mitch Hurwitz

“Whether or not you ‘know what you know her from,’ chances are you have seen Judy Greer in a movie, at least once in your life, and wanted to be best friends with her. The good news is that her book is just as honest, witty, and observant as she actually is. From her early life and her experiences in love and friendship to the weird world of Hollywood, she candidly spills the beans and consistently entertains. So now is your chance—you too can be friends with Judy (sort of).”
—Rashida Jones

“If you’ve heard Judy speak even once you can hear her voice all through these wonderful stories, because she writes like she talks and what she says is so much fun to listen to. My only complaint was how much I missed her when the book was over—but that’s how I always feel after a long stay with a good friend.”
—Jim Parsons

“I read it in one sitting. Then I flushed.”
—Zach Galifianakis

"Omy gosh. Me too!" That's what you'll find yourself saying over and over again while reading this book. With each new story from her life, Judy Greer really made me feel like one of her oldest friends. She's candid and funny without forcing a punchline. It's a compilation of stories from the moments that have lead her to the brink of stardom. I knew OF Judy before I read this book. I'd seen her in many of my favorite movies and shows and have come to quote her character's quips with my friends. However, after reading this book I feel like I actually KNOW Judy. She's sweet and hopeful and a little disheveled in a completly relatable way. I'll be sharing this book with each of my best friends, knowing full well that we'll be quoting it in no time.

    more from this reviewer

Judy Greer is that actress who has been in everything. The title

Judy Greer is that actress who has been in everything. The title of her memoir, I Don't Know Where You Know Me From, references the fact that people come up to her, but can't quite remember what they have seen her in.
She's usually the best friend/co-worker (in 27 Dresses and The Wedding Planner) or the nerdy/oversexed TV guest star (Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Arrested Development).  For someone who has worked with so many famous actors, Greer really doesn't dish much. If you are looking for gossip on Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Lopez, you won't find it here.
We do get a nice story about how Ashton Kutcher bought her dad a motorcycle, and the time she was in the restroom with Jennifer Lopez, but mostly it's about her life as a working actor, going from city to city and job to job.
Greer seems like the girl-next-door, and the most interesting chapters include one where she asked her closest friends (who are not in showbiz) to write about what's it's like being her friend, and how she fell in love with a man who has two tween children, and a ex-wife who is a sheriff, and how they shared two homes hours away from each other. (She made it into a sitcom, but alas it didn't last long.)
Reading it, I felt like I was talking to my best friend, and that is the reason to read this book, not for juicy Hollywood gossip. You'll have to watch TMZ for that.

    I knew her from Jawbreaker

I like Judy Greer - she is one of the few actors I never get tired of seeing, even now on commercials I still watch her. I have followed her on reluctantly healthy as well. I enjoyed the book for what it was, a brief look into her past and glimps into the present. I do wish there would have been more insight into her film roles (LOVED her in Jawbreaker!) but that was not the case.

I think Judy Greer's acting roles are exactly like I Don't Kno

I think Judy Greer's acting roles are exactly like I Don't Know What You Know Me From. It isn't interesting enough to be a book on its own. There was never really a moment that made me go "Oh!" and become engrossed in this book. Greer's writing and the content just weren't engaging. There is nothing wrong with us ordinary folk, but I wouldn't read a book about my neighbor's life. And that's exactly what this felt like.

It was an easy read, don't get me wrong. It was light, funny, and sweet. But that's the thing. It was too light. I didn't feel like there was enough substance to keep my interest for very long. Usually, I enjoy a good memoir. Chelsea Handler's are some of my favorites. A look into a different world are very appealing to me, whether they're in memoirs or fiction works. This book just didn't give off that vibe.

Ultimately, this book just didn't do it for me. If you have some sort of connection to Judy Greer or her career, I Don't Know What You Know Me From may be more of your type of book.

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to NetGalley and Judy Greer.

    I expected a little more....

I've read quite a few biographies of celebrities and when I get done I want to be their friend and know more about them. After reading Judy Greer's, I think I'd be friends with her because she is so normal but it did not make for the best book to read. It's quick and easy and it makes you like her but it was not the most entertaining book I've read. She had a few funny stories but I was wanting more juicy stories about her run ins with other celebrities.
