If anyone knows tough, it’s Jay Bilas. A four-year starter at Duke, he learned a strong work ethic under Coach Mike Krzyzewski. After playing professionally overseas, he returned to Duke, where he served as Krzyzewski’s assistant coach for three seasons, helping to guide the Blue Devils to two national championships. He has since become one of basketball’s most recognizable faces through his insightful analysis on ESPN’s SportsCenter and College GameDay.

Through his ups and downs on and off the court, Bilas learned the true meaning of toughness from coaches, teammates, and colleagues. Now, in Toughness, he examines this misunderstood—yet vital—attribute and how it contributes to winning in sports and in life. Featuring never-before-heard stories and personal philosophies on toughness from top players and coaches, including Coach K, Bob Knight, Grant Hill, Mia Hamm, Jon Gruden, Tom Izzo, Roy Williams, Bill Self, Curtis Strange, and many others—Bilas redefines what it takes to succeed.

From Barnes & Noble

What does toughness truly mean? To answer that question former college basketball star and ESPN Sports Center hoop analyst Jay Bilas queried coaches and players, beginning with his Duke own mentor Mike Krzyzewski. Others sharing their opinions and stories about this often-misunderstood attribute are Bobby Knight, Mia Hamm, Grant Hill, Jon Gruden, Bill Self, Curtis Strange, and Tom Izzo. Living as we do in the golden age of trash-talking, Toughness arrives just the right time as a corrective. Now in trade paperback and NOOK Book.

Kirkus Reviews
Former Duke basketball player and current ESPN college hoops analyst Bilas surveys an all-star cast of athletes and coaches to define the true meaning of toughness--and suggest how it can be developed. In a sports landscape increasingly dominated by chest-thumping, trash-talking prima donnas, the word "tough" is casually and repeatedly thrown around by commentators and athletes alike. The author, however, thinks that somewhere along the way, people lost sight of the proper meaning of the word. After penning a well-received, basketball-focused article on the topic for ESPN.com, he set out to rectify the problem on a wider scale. Through a series of anecdotes and insights shared by the likes of Bilas' own college coach, Mike Krzyzewski, as well as other luminaries, including Bob Knight, Roy Williams, Tom Izzo, Jon Gruden, Grant Hill, and a number of Bilas' former teammates (including Mark Alarie and Tommy Amaker), the author offers his own conception of toughness. Rather than being defined by tough talk and intimidation, it includes characteristics ranging from courage and persistence to commitment and resilience--and not just on the court. Through the use of stories from his own upbringing, college and pro playing days, career as a lawyer and experience as a broadcaster, Bilas provides personal examples of the lessons imparted by the coaches and players he quotes throughout the narrative. His clichéd reverence for his parents is predictable (though still touching), and many of the lessons imparted by the book's interview subjects are redundant. Still, for the less cynical, there is wisdom to be gleaned from Bilas, and by the end, it's easy to believe that the only obstacle to improved toughness is one's own unwillingness to work at it. A better fit for the article format, but there's enough here to toughen up even the softest players.

Must read for anyone looking to become more successful in their chosen field while enjoying a great read

A must read for anyone searching for the true meaning of toughness in athletics, business, and life. The book is filled with inspiring stories and lessons from some of the most successful individuals in their fields that clearly illustrate what it takes to be a tougher teammate, leader, or friend. The book clearly outlines how toughness is a skill that can be developed through many different components that Bilas breaks down in each chapter. It is a warm hearted read that goes by very quickly. I am really glad to have purchased this book and highly recommend it. I have and will continue to apply the lessons I learned to my everyday life. Thank you for sharing your stories and thoughts Mr. Bilas.

Result 15: The Clearing Around Camp (the map of the forest is here)<p>
If your cat is going hunting, or to the medicine cat den, or to sleep, etc., make sure to actually make your cat go there. You can post in camp 'Silverstar is in her den.', but then make sure to go to the den and also post there. Additionally, if you are an apprentice, warrior, queen, kit, elder or medicine cat, you would not spend all of your time in the clearing. Make sure to hang out in the den too, again posting at camp where you are. I also worked really hard to actually make a forest, so go there too. There are different conditions in different areas, including prey, sun, and instructions for weather. I even made a twoleg area and borders. Please use them, and also go to the area that best suites your needs. Again, post at camp where you are.<p>

    The Warrior Code:<br>
    1. Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.<br>
    2. Do not hunt or tresspass or other Clan's territory.<br>
    3. Elders, queens and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentoces may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders. If any warrior or apprentice is sick or injured, they may eat while the elders, queens and kits are eating.<br>
    4. Prey is only to be eaten. Give thanks to Starclan for it's life.<br>
    5. A kit must be 6 moons old to become an apprentice.<br>
    6. Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one noght after receiving their warrior name.<br>
    7. A cat cannot be made deputy without mentoring at least one apprentice.<br>
    8. The deputy will become clan vleader when the leader dies, retires or is exiled.<br>
    9. After death or retirement of the deputy, the new deputy must be choosen before moonhigh.<br>
    10. A gathering of all four Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts the night. There shall be no fighting amoung Clans at this time.<br>
    11. Boundaries must be marked and checked daily. Challenge all tresspassing cats.<br>
    12. No warrior can neglect a kit in pain or danger, even if the kit is from a different clan.<br>
    13. The word of the Clan Leadee is the warrior code.<br>
    14. An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win his/her battles, unless they are outsode the warrior code or it is nessesary for self-defense.<br>
    15. A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.<br>
    16. Each Clan has the right to be independent, but in times of trouble they must forget their boundaries and fight side by side to protect the four. Each clan must help the others so that no Clan will fall.<p>
Jayclan follows the warrior code. We also will have weather, times of day, and seasons. The leader will post at the beginning of the day the weather for the day. Every week, it is a new season. The time is ET.<p>

    Valuable Advice

It has been said often “experience is the best teacher” and I have often said, “real leadership skill is forged by overcoming adversity.” Jay Bilas dispels many myths about “toughness” in his excellent book, one that is especially valuable for anyone seeking success in his or her chosen career.

Sports buffs, military history lovers, science reporters and middle managers everywhere take note: this volume offers numerous examples you can use in your workplace, home, church or next volunteer assignment.

Whether you enjoy sports or not and whether or not you’re a fan of Coach K, John Wooden, Jackie Robinson, Jim or John Harbaugh, Colin Powell, Jack Welch and many others who developed the required “toughness” to excel in life, you will nonetheless profit as I have from reading what Jay Bilas has written.
