Overview

Chris Beck played high school football. He bought a motorcycle, much to his mother's dismay, at age 17. He grew up to become a U.S. Navy SEAL, serving our country for twenty years on thirteen deployments, including seven combat deployments, and ultimately earned a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. To everyone who saw him, he was a hero. A warrior. A man.

But underneath his burly beard, Chris had a secret, one that had been buried deep inside his heart since he was a little boy-one as hidden as the panty hose in the back of his drawer. He was transgender, and the woman inside needed to get out.

This is the journey of a girl in a man's body and her road to self-actualization as a woman amidst the PTSD of war, family rejection and our society's strict gender rules and perceptions. It is about a fight to be free inside one's own body, a fight that requires the strength of a Warrior Princess.

Kristin's story of boy to woman explores the tangled emotions of the transgender experience and opens up a new dialogue about being male or female: Is gender merely between your legs or is it something much bigger?

Editorial Reviews

Washington, D.C. - OutServe Magazine
Speckhard and Beck have teamed up to give us one of the smartest and most important books of the year. Warrior Princess is the story of Kristin Beck, formerly Chris, a decorated Navy SEAL and American patriot who faced a lifelong struggle to come to terms with her gender identity. Beck is a natural protagonist…strong, hardworking, and deeply patriotic. Whether a pacifist or a hawk, advocate or opponent of LGBT equality, Warrior Princess is a raw, honest, and surprisingly relatable read.
Washington, D.C. - Randi Ettner, Ph.D.
"Kristin Beck is a woman of extraordinary courage. Her story is an inspiration to all and a call to arms for those who wish to live authentically. Her bravery as a SEAL rivals the bravery she exhibits in crossing the seemingly inviolable gender boundary. Ms. Beck is a hero who has sacrificed for her country and shed light on this most misunderstood area of human behavior."
Washington, D.C. - Kevan Wylie, M.D.
“This momentous book shares vividly the real life experiences of a veteran SEAL who goes on to transition as a civilian. The raw adrenaline-packed events explicitly describe growing up, marriage, combat and leave and are experienced through anecdotes to the audience. The dramatic combat action and the shared emotional responses to both the war and the gender dysphoria are conviction of the traumas of both combat and transition."
Washington, D.C. - Colonel Carl A. Castro
"Warrior Princess is a profile of courage, both physical and personal. It shatters one's perceptions of what courage is and how it is shown. Courage isn't just about physical bravery, it is also about personal bravery. Dr. Anne Speckhard does a marvelous job of taking us on a journey about being transgender in the military. Warrior Princess should be required reading by anyone supporting our troops, whether they support transgender issues or not."
Washington, D.C. - Diane H. Mazur
“There’s no need for the military to be a one-size-fits-all world. This story will widen your perspective about the meaning of gender and how much it matters—or doesn’t—for successful military service. This inspiring account is also written for anyone working with veterans and their transition to civilian life, no matter what the issues might be.”

Kristin could have gone to any legitimate author and had a great book.
It is too bad that Kristin got together with a hack, and the hack has a doctorate?
Someone should revoke that PhD. and close the doors on Advance Press

I'm giving this four stars because Kristin's story needs to be told. But I am reading the softback version (wish I had bought the ebook) and it is desperately in need of an editor. "But when Chris got a part-time doing construction worker with a contractor..." That's just awful.

Exceptional story, however Kristin deserves to have her story told well and this is not the case. Due diligence editing clearly did not occur here and that is an unacceptable disappointment. Kristin's story is tremendous on many levels and has the potential to shift societal viewpoints on a multiplicity of topics...she deserves to be heard and this why I awarded it five stars. She more than earned it.

    Great Story, horrible writing!

The story of Kristen's life is great but not fully accurate! However, I looked up other books by Anne Speckhard and see she tends to take other's stories for her own benefit as an author. I wish Anne was better at writing.

Attempt #2 to post: OMGG is what I'd said. Kris' story is a powerful one, and she serves as an inspiration in numerous ways. Although I am very opposed to the military-industrial complex and their nefarious schemes, I consider Kris to be a true hero. Her story is so heartbreaking, and I am so glad she found the courage to come out the way she did. However, as regards this book: I agree with most of the other posts here. This book is the most appalling example of atrocious story-telling,writing, grammar, and editing (IT WAS EDITED??!!) I have ever laid my hands on. I am a psychotherapist who has worked with many trans people and war vets and am a former English teacher for speakers of other languages. I really wanted to get into and then use/share this book. My advice? Let Kris find a decent editor and a new publisher and then y'all buy a copy of the second or third printing . I do not expect Kris to be grammarian or an expert author. She sure deserved better from her publisher, especially for this story. Power to you, Kris. I salute you.

    Amazing, brave story!!!

In spite of the fact that I was a teacher years ago, I never pay much attention to editing when I read a book. I just immerse myself in what I am reading. If the story grabs me, it grabs me. And this memoir grabbed me! Born Christopher Beck, Kristin always felt like a female trapped in a male body. Warrior Princess is Kristin Beck's fascinating journey from childhood to Navy SEAL to coming out transgender. We feel Kristin's frustrations growing up in the wrong body in an unsupportive family. We marvel at her bravery as a Navy SEAL. We understand the devastation that she goes through in her inability to form a relationship with her sons. We feel the heartbreak that she suffered losing many of her SEAL brothers throughout her career. We root for acceptance as she comes out to her family, her friends, at work, and to the world, as she finally sets herself free to be the woman she always she was meant to be. This is a great real life story of supreme bravery that I recommend to everyon

I was very disappointed in this book. It seemed like Kristin had told a string of random stories from her life to the author, they recorded them, transcribed them and then put them in vague chronological order. there were facts missing that left me confused, like after they lived in Va, when did they move back to NY? It was very choppy and poorly edited, I found numerous typos. As a writer and editor, i expect higher quality when I buy a book.
