Overview

The New York Times bestselling author of Soldier Dogs returns with the incredible story of K-9 Marine hero Lucca, and the handlers who fought alongside her through two bloody wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Top Dog, Maria Goodavage takes readers into the life of Lucca K458, a decorated and highly skilled military working dog. An extraordinary bond develops between Lucca and Marine Corps dog handlers Chris Willingham and Juan Rodriguez, in what would become a legendary 400-mission career. A Specialized Search Dog, Lucca belongs to an elite group trained to work off-leash at long distances from her handler. She served alongside both Special Forces and regular infantry, and became so sought-after that platoons frequently requested her by name.

The book describes in gritty detail Lucca's adventures on and off the battlefields, including tense, lifesaving explosives finds and firefights, as well as the bravery of fellow handlers and dogs they served with. Ultimately we see how the bond between Lucca and her handlers overcame the endless brutalities of war and the traumas this violence ignites.

Here is a portrait of modern warfare with a heartwarming and inspiring conclusion that will touch dog lovers and the toughest military readers.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

In her word-of-mouth bestseller Soldier Dogs, Maria Goodavage introduced us to the four-legged K-9 heroes of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In Top Dog, she moves even closer, immersing us in the lives on and off the battlefield of brave canine Lucca and her comparably brave Marine Corps dog handlers. Any pet lover will respond viscerally to these true stories of Lucca's unfaltering bond with her human partners, even in the midst of traumatizing explosions and violent attacks. (P.S. Lucca is not your average military K-9. She belongs to an elite group trained to work off-leash at long distances from her handler.)

Library Journal
★ 10/15/2014
Goodavage, a former reporter with USA Today, continues to tell the story of military working dogs that she began in 2012's Soldier Dogs: the Untold Story of America's Canine Heroes. This time, readers follow one particular canine, German shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix Lucca and her handlers as they "walk point," discovering IEDs and caches of weapons in Afghanistan. Lucca is a specialized search dog (SSD), trained to work off leash at distances from her handler, directed by hand signals or a microphone concealed in her vest. The author explains the lengthy, arduous training in conditions simulating the harsh environments the dogs will experience. She then describes the dangerous missions that the teams undertook and their triumphs and tragedies. The result is an eye-opening account of the job these intelligent dogs and their courageous handlers do. VERDICT Readers familiar with Goodavage's previous book or Mike Ritland's 2013 Trident K-9 Warriors, who are interested in learning about the specialized training military dogs receive, or who want more proof of the intensity of the human-animal bond, will want to read this riveting title that is filled with excitement and heartbreak.
