There has been nothing before, written in English or any other language, like this presentation of Yoga.
Noetic Sciences Review
Keeps the reader spellbound. . .A vicarious journey through the mystical path taken by Yogananda.
Newsweek
Fascinating. . . .ingenuously described in the lush style of the Orient.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The original text of Yogananda's classic introduction to Eastern mysticism.
Library Journal
The work is enduringly popular because it introduces millions of readers to Eastern spiritual thought. Yogananda's masterly storytelling epitomizes the Indian oral tradition with its wit, charm, and compassionate wisdom. The yogi begins by showing how his childhood experiences in turn-of-the-century India produced a spiritual youth in search of an enlightened teacher, continues with an account of his years of training in the hermitage of a revered master, and concludes with the highlights of a period, beginning in 1920, during which he lived and taught in America. Yogananda sensitively interprets not only his own spiritual evolution but also his relationship with elements of the West's spiritual tradition, such as the story of Adam and Eve, providing a penetrating look at the ultimate mysteries of human existence. Bibliographical footnotes, which would have interrupted Kingsley's magnificent narration, are thoughtfully included in an accompanying booklet. -- James Dudley, Copiague, New York

Meet the Author

Yogananda was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India to a devout family. According to his younger brother, Sananda, from his earliest years young Mukunda's awareness and experience of the spiritual was far beyond the ordinary. In his youth he sought out many of India's Hindu sages and saints, hoping to find an illuminated teacher to guide him in his spiritual quest.

Yogananda's seeking after various saints mostly ended when he met his guru, Swami Yukteswar Giri, in 1910, at the age of 17. He describes his first meeting with Yukteswar as a rekindling of a relationship that had lasted for many lifetimes

Are you ready to change your life?

We all finally get to a point in our life, usually after much pain, where we answer this question with a resounding 'yes.' When that time comes, according to Hindu tradition, the Guru appears. Funny, I thought I was Catholic. This book not only opened my mind to new possibilities, but changed my life forever. I soon found myself waking up every morning happy- something I had not experienced before. And all because I learned a technique called meditation which helped me to realize that God is in all, but most especially, in the form of this beautiful man from India who I now respectfully refer to as my Guru. What can I say- if you are going to get hooked on something or someone-I highly recommend getting drunk on God. Yogananda will show you how. A mind & soul altering book.

Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda

I liked the book because I've started meditating and I now realize there are different types of yoga/yogis. There's the physical type and the meditating type.

I enjoyed hearing all of the stories. There was a lot of faith and patience that everything would turn out just fine and it did.

    I Also Recommend:

This book also reveals, for the first time to Westerners the los

This book also reveals, for the first time to Westerners the lost science of Kriya Yoga (which means, "Divine Union"), which is a scientific technique to develop direct experience of God. Yogananda explains this technique, its history, and why it is so effective.I was so mesmerized by it that I had a hard time to put down the book until I had finished reading it. Since then I have reread it a few times. The book, you may say, touched my very soul. After reading the book, I signed up with Self-Realization Fellowship, Yogananda's Los Angeles based spiritual organization, to receive the weekly Lessons that the great saint had left for us before he left his body. What those lessons have done for me, there are no words to express.  Whether you are religious or not, you will find this masterfully well-written work touch you in ways that you've not dreamed of. Yogananda orchestrates chapters about the astral realms, great scientists, poets, saints (in India as well as in the West), masters, Gandhi, and others which are both moving and inspirational. highly recommended read.

    Highly Recommended

I loved it a real magic carpet ride. Whether Jew, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, whatever your religion you will enjoy this book. It is a journey toward enlightenment, and an adventure by car and boat. This is an adventure that takes you on a quest through several countries and beliefs. I found a miracle on almost on every page. I loved every minute. So long as you keep an open mind you will love it.

    You won't regret it!

    An amazing book. Very inspirational.
I'm a procrastinator. Regarding yoga/meditation, my approach for the last 6 or 7 years has been: I'll start next month.
If 'Autobiography' doesn't light that fire under me, nothing will. I've actually reached out to the organization and requested some home lessons to start.
If you're not totally into yoga, that's fine. Neither was/am I, but the book even reads like a novel quite often. The story, in itself, is fun.

If you only read one of Paramhansaji's books, this is the one!

I am a student of Yogananda and Kriyananda's form of Kriya Yoga, I am discipled in Ananda, the organisation Kriyananda founded after his guru's death to carry on Yogananda's untainted teachings. I must say that this is, of all the writings of these two great men of God, the most important of their books to read, followed closely by 'God is for Everyone' which was written by Kriyananda as a modernisation of Yogananda's 'Science of Religion', and 'Awaken to Superconsciousness' also by Kriyananda.

    Lyrical, Spiritual, Grounded

I greatly enjoyed this book. It blends the life story of a great man who lived during a very interesting era, with valuable insight into the spiritual realm generally and yoga specifically. Yogananda does not try to convince the skeptic. He simply and humbly presents his story.

Classic on Comparative Religion & Raja Yoga

I was deeply effected in a positive way upon my first reading of Yogananda's life in the Autobiography of a Yogi. It took me to a deeper level of understanding and motivated me to a more serious and better informed spiritual search. There is a lot of thought provoking data here for most students of comparative religion. Yogananda opens up a revelation of fresh and valid spritiual concepts that answered many of my long lived querys. The most recent editions are the most accurate, as the author later added the 49th chapter and made important changes with each new printing. He appointed and personally trained 2 editors-in-chiefs to continue this process after his passing. Their work is very much in tune with the process which he himself began. And very much appreciated. From my research into his other writings, the editions with the orange covers are clearly representing the real Paramanhansa Yogananda. This book will change your life! I know it changed mine.

    Thank You , Paramahansa Yogananda

'Autobiography of a Yogi ' is , for me , the most important contribution in answering life's questions that pertain to ' Why are we here ( ? ) ' . Paramahansa Yogananda is one of God's saints. He is a prophet of love. I wish I had the words to express how good I feel about what he has written. He explains what Jesus meant about The Christ Consciousness. He explains many verses from the old testament of the Bible. He stressed over and again how important it is to meditate on Almighty God and the importance of yoga. He wrote two chapters that relate to ' Man does not live by bread alone '. He shared with us his encounter with his resurrected ( ! ) Guru, Sri Yukteswar, who had explained to him the allegory of the Garden of Eden. He explained many similarities of Hinduism and Christianity , including the 'Sat, Tat ,and Aum ' of Hinduism and its direct correlation to the 'Father , Son , and Holy Spirit' of Christianity. He candidly offered the realization that until humankind does away with its desires for money, sex , and wine, we will still reincarnate on the plane of earth. He tells us that few have known the final truths , and when asked as to what they are, remain silent - - we must leave some questions to the infiite.

    I Also Recommend:

    The Personality of a Politician

Yogananda has the personality of a politician: capable of projecting great warmth to sway others to his point of view. Nevertheless, it is odd for the autobiography of a parmamahansa to contain so many stories of authority figures acceding to the author's "superior" person.

If Steve Jobs loves this book, then it is something that I should read!

I was reading where Steve Jobs indicated should he be on a deserted island, and was able to bring something along with, this book would be in his back pack. So I got to thinking that since I am on the quest of my life, and reading a book penned that long ago would bring new insights into my life. I must say that is is a book that I have on my Nook, along with several others that are guiding me on my quest in learing more about myself. For that I appreciate my little Nook, because it has allowed me more information that I would never would have had the space to store as many volumes as I have found on-line. The following list will indicate a little bit of what type of quest I have found myself following. 10 Mindful Minutes by Goldie Hawn, tells me how to deal with friends and family but especilly children and my grandson. Breaking Free from Emotional Eating by Geneene Roth, she indicates to me that I can do something about the "fat girl" within, by honering her and treating her much better than I have before. Eating bin the Light of the Moon, by Anita Johnston, Ph.D was a book that both my husband and I read together and got a lot out of it, allowing us to design a new life for us. The author of this book allows the reader to grow from the stories that she tells about what has happened to her and to others in her practice, making me a better person. Also allowing me to treat myself much better than I had before. So I am growing as I read, and that is why I love reading so much. This next book is a book that I have had for a while, but am still trying to get into it. It is on my list of books to read in the near future: Left Brained, Write Brained by Smokey Trudeau. I have read a book about drawing that shared almost the same title, and I love to write, and though it may help. But it won't help if I don't read it. So its next, I promise! I have a lot more books on my Nook, but I am stopping here with Mothers and Daughters by Mary Higgins Clark. I have had a problem with my mother, and Mary Higgins Clark talks about working and writing with her mother, Mary Higgns Clark. Wow, how interesting will that be, again I don't know as I haven't read it. But I am intrigued. So when I read it, I will let you know, OK?

If you want to know more about yourself, I believe that reading the Autobio of a Yogi is required reading, for sure. Paramahansa had quite a life. He talkes about his Mother, Father and his Brother. And how their life has imoacted on his and how becoming a Yogi has significantly changed his life going forwards. Of course, I will never have to worry of beconing a Yogi, I will have to just sit here and use my imagination. I believe reading anything even a small poem by using your imagination is most important in this life.

My quest is something that takes up a lot of my life now that I am retired, I find I have much more time and energy to be on this quest that I ever had before when I was working. So I am grateful that I have the opportunity to do this now.
