My sixth grade teacher read several Ralph Moody books to us and they have always been a favorite of mine. Now that I have a young boy of my own, I am purchasing this to read nightly to him. Looking forward to creating good memories of our own.

It is 1906, and eight-year-old Ralph Moody’s family is getting ready to
move. They live in East Rochester, NH, and Ralph’s father Charles
works in the woolen mills, but it isn’t good for his lungs. Cousin
Phil, who lives in Denver, CO, visits and convinces Father that ranching
in Colorado would be better for his health. So Father, Mother, Grace,
Muriel, Philip, Hal, and Ralph rent a ranch on the Fort Logan-Morrison
road, near Littleton, CO, not far from Denver. This autobiographical
book chronicles their first year which involves settling on the ranch,
meeting neighbors, planting crops, raising animals, going to school,
experiencing a huge wind storm,and fighting over irrigation rights.
Ralph, who becomes known as “Little Britches,” learns how to be a cowboy
and even participates in a rodeo, but will the ranch be successful?
Will the family even survive? This series of books has long been
recommended by homeschoolers as the “Little House for Boys.” First,
there are some negatives, one of which is language issues. One source
says, “Be aware, however, that there is some inappropriate language used
– no doubt in keeping with the actual verbiage of rugged cowboys and
characters of the time.” Another source says, “an excellent read-aloud
selection (which will allow you to filter out the smattering of ‘cuss’
words that occur, and which Moody himself wasn’t allowed to use as a
lad).” And still another source says, “A customer pointed out that
there are a few undesirable words used to watch out for.” Also, several
who have read the entire series have noted that the later books,
especially after Ralph goes to live with his grandfather in The Fields
of Home, are not as good as the earlier ones which detail his childhood
because they are more “dark” with lots of bad attitudes which are
displayed over and over. However, there are also some strong positives.
Little Britches is rich in the values of family unity, honesty,
inventiveness, earning others’ trust, and satisfaction in a job well
done. And there is great emphasis on character development. Ralph
gets in several predicaments and doesn’t always make the right choices,
but he learns to do better by heeding hisfather’s wise advice, who said,
“Any man who says the world owes him a living is dishonest. The same
God that made you and me made this earth. And He planned it so that it
would yield every single thing that the people on it need. But He was
careful to plan it so that it would only yield up its wealth in exchange
for the labor of man. Any man who tries to share in that wealth without
contributing the work of his brain or his hands is dishonest.” Amen!
What an important lesson that is so needed today! The seven sequels are
Man of the Family, The Home Ranch, Mary Emma and Company, The Fields of
Home, Shaking the Nickel Bush, The Dry Divide, and Horse of a Different
Color.

Story filled with rich characters and lessons

I encourage you to get the book. My ten year old daughter enjoyed the stories and the family immensely. But the life lessons on how to grow up to be a man of character are incredible. The father is full of wisdom that is passed to us through the books pages. All of your kids will enjoy these stories of growing up on a ranch in Colorado at the turn of the century, but your boys will especially love it.

We were read this book aloud in the eighth grade by our English teacher. Mrs. Sanders did such an awesome job with emphasis and story telling that I've never forgotten. Down through the years I've looked for the book, but being unable to remember the entire title I wasn't able to find it. Then talking with a friend one day he helped me search for it on Google. He found it! I was so excited and now reading it to my three year old grandson. I bought the book to be saved for him to read again mwhen he's older hoping to give him the gift of enjoyable reading in the same way Mrs. Sanders gave it to me. This is a great little book and I recommend it to adult or older child alike.

Hard to Resist

As I said regarding "Man of the House", I began reading the books in this series because a student of mine was begging me to and I didn't want to dissapoint her. I am in my 30's and this would not be my usual choice of personal reading, but despite my reservations, I quickly became hooked. This story details the adventures of the Moody family, told from the perspective of 8(?) year old Ralph, who has moved from the city to try their hand at ranching. It is similar to the "Little House" books, but told more from a male perspective, and more action oriented. You'll get caught up in the story, but you'll be reminded that it is really about relationships. In spite of myself, I found this book to be irresistable. I have passed it along to my nieces and nephews and it has quickly become a family favorite.

a wonderful story about relationship and character

I read this book out loud to my two daughters, 12 & 10. Even my 6 yo found herself captivated by the author's memories of his life on a Colorado ranch and the powerful lessons his father taught him about courage, honor, respect, trustworthiness, and even restitution! This is a novel that speaks volumes about character, within the carefully chosen words of Ralph's father. Ralph takes us on a wonderful ride through his childhood, letting us experience the valuable lessons he learns about life and relationships.

A MASTERPIECE

i love this book. every day i looked forward to reading little britches. that was the best part of the day. i recamend this book to anyone that loves reading. it was so interesting, funny, and fun.[just to tell you there is a ton of swereing in it but besides that, clean]. THE CRITIC'S OPION

Britches is awsome

This is an incredible book and I would recomend it to anyone who likes reading. Its amazing how Ralf Moody remembers this much from his childhood. Him and his dad coming together was awesome!

A major influence on my life.

I don't remember when my father started reading me the books by Ralph Moody, but it must have been when I was very young. We worked through the series many times. Mr. Moody's writing, as read aloud by my father, has had a profound influence on my life. We became great friends over these books.

Good Family Book

Read my freshman year of a local college. Very inspirational and wonderful to read (Especially to the entire family)!

We loved it

I read this book to my 5 children and we loved it. (I skipped the "cowboy language") We have quickly read the next 4 books in the series and I'm ready to order the next one. It's like a "Little House" series with the boy as the main character. Great book!!!!

wonderful read aloud

I just finished reading this book aloud with my 10 yr old son. We loved it and think it is a book all families should read together. I am buying all the other books since we just want to know what happened next in this young man's life.

I FRIST HEARD OF LITTLE BRITTES IN A COUNTY SCHOOL.OUR TEACHER READ IT TO US I SEARCHED FOR THIS FOR TEWENT YEARS AND SOME. WE FOND IN A BARNS& NOBLES IN CAPE GIREAU, MO. I WAS THRILLD ! CAUSE I REALLY WANT TO READ IT. MY TEACHER IS GONE NOW , BUT SHE LEFT ME AN VERY WONDERFULL MEMORY. AND WHEN I READ IT I READ IT FROM FRONT TO BACK I REMMBERD HER SO WELL, SHE WAS A GREAT TEACHER. AND WILL MISS VERY MUCH.
